I remember a tweet about someone complaining that coyotes kept eating their cats, and everytime that happened they went back to the shelter and get a new cat, over and over again, and one reply said "I think you're just feeding cats to the coyotes at this point". This movie reminded me of that.

As I watched Affleck act, I kept thinking about "Gone Girl" and how this could have been an amazing sequel to it. Amy Dunne decided to enjoy her sexuality and mess with Nick's masculinity. Nick growing to be more and more psychotic. Struggling with his newfound urge to kill and his growing attraction to the woman who tried to kill him and now tortures him in front of his neighbors. Weirdly enough, their marriage has never been better🤣

All Nick wants from Amy by the end is for her to let go of the chokehold she has on his life. Her taking an interest in someone else was would be a relief. When I watched this movie, I thought they were going for a clever screen trick in that the only time we really see Melinda being flirty or intimate with other guys, it was being framed through Affleck's character. Over-the-shoulder camera shots during the pool scene; Affleck dreaming that she was screwing the piano player in the car; Affleck seeing them go into rooms from the upstairs floor. So, it gave the impression that Affleck was misreading her being close with male friends, but the viewer isn't seeing the reality because of how the visual medium is framing the story.
Obviously, after reading a synopsis on the book, I concluded that my interpretation was incorrect, but I still think that would have been an interesting take.

I think making her aware and wilfully complicit would've been an interesting angle to go down, because you think you're watching one fucked up murderous person and one fucked up but not murderous person, until the end when you realise they're both fucked up and murderous.

Also because the rise of consumer culture flooded the market with gadgets and products to replicate public establishments like bars and restaurants in your home for the first time. It was also the first time that most people had homes big enough to host parties. And with homes and appliances being used as status objects you want to be able to show off. And so being a good host (or hostess, mostly, since the woman did all the work and had the most to lose socially if she failed) became pushed by the commercial culture of the time. The 20th century was the birth of domestic entertaining as we know it today. The concept of a house party or cocktail party (where guests are freely milling about in clusters) didnt even exist prior to the 20s; that would be too scandalous to let women talk to whatever mixed company they wanted. Previously it was more just the wealthy hosting formal organized dinners (obviously all done by the servants) and everyone else just went to the pub to socialise and then returned to their own homes to sleep. Drinking wasn't something really associated with doing in the domestic sphere at all.
I guess home entertaining culture would seem weird to our generation, (even pre COVID) probably due to a combination of facts like 1- we're back to living in tiny rentals, so no nice home to show off and we'll probably move in a year anyway so who cares about the neighbours 2- no one can afford to be a homemaker or devote any of the time, energy and money necessary for entertaining 3- social life happens online. If you have something to brag about, you post it; you don't need to invite someone to your home 4- no one cares about your gadgets or new recipe because we've already seen cooler stuff online 5- we have better things to do in our free time

Oh BOY were the 50s a different time. My grandma and grandpa had swinging parties in their youth which led to everybody getting divorced and remarried to different partners, except for one woman who didn't want to, she wound up alone and upset, and my grandma still invited everybody over to her pool for naked swim parties, it was something before the internet existed for sure.
