    Oh, no - please, PLEASE protect your eyes - I BEG you! All of these systems need to come with proper enclosures - the glasses aren't enough. It takes less than a second to permanently damage your retina, the most delicate of tissue. As someone who has worked in an optics lab, these laser cutters horrify me.

    I’m not quite ready yet to add a laser to my shop since it’s still early stages for me, but when I look at the acrylic cutting and how you can use this for templating, I can see the value. Looking forward to seeing what comes up on the other channel. Great job as always Dennis.

    I've been using the NEJE machines for nearly five months now, beginning with the 3 Max & E40 and now I'm using the NEJE Max 4 & E80. For me, it's easy to work with the E80 and E40 lasers and lightburn. I haven't encountered any problems with those NEJE machines so far. Lately, I've had this urge to use them for crafting some Halloween goodies, making gifts for the family, and even selling some of the stuff I create with 'em.

    I have just binged a LOT of your videos. Ive recently got a work space and im planning some projects among them building a dobsonian mount for my telescope.
    I like your impartial reviews of the chinese tools. I buy a lot of chinese astronomy equipment and there are some very good finds out there for the price, so it is nice to see you doing the hard work with woodworking equipment!
    There will be some precise measurements and i think a laser like this will be very useful. I can plot it out and cut from cardboard to make sure everything is perfect.
    Whilst it wont cut 18mm plywood i think it will be invaluable for marking the cut lines on the project so everything is as precise as possible. Should also be good to cut multiple thin sheets of wood together to make twmplates for the router maybe?

    I am waiting for my Ikier 24W unit, had the same logical path with the spot size, and took the "weaker" unit, also because the price was half of the 48W one. I plan to use it for templating/jig making, thus ditching the idea of a cnc, as I just work with wood. Great video!

    Arghh! I missed the part of the Neje Max 4 not being able to cut clear acrylic. I purchased this laser, and the dust extraction silent box plans, and have reached the stage of cutting the acrylic parts. Was left perplexed why the clear was not cutting.
    Thanks for all your wonderful content Dennis.

      Why will it not cut clear, due to the transparency? Could a layer of protective tape be added to the surface of the clear. Would that work?

    Dennis, I so much wanted to like this laser engraver. But I can’t. I bought mine a few months ago. I got everything. It arrived damaged. No fault of NEJE. The package looked like it was very roughly handled. Ok, I was let down because I really wanted to use it for a project. I then went looking for customer support. I have to say I don’t like it. The customer support is only available as a forum. You have to create an account and then create a forum entry. There is no mechanism to talk to a live person. So I sent in the pictures of the damage. The “gimble” or x-axis, z-axis assembly was severely bent when the package was dropped or hit on the end longitudinally. The wheels used to keep track on the y-axis were severely damaged and bent the assembly used to tension the X-axis drive belt. I asked NEJE to send me the entire assembly and I would return the damaged parts. NEJE would not do this. Instead they sent one end of the assembly and told me to replace it. First of all I couldn’t remove the part they wanted me to replace because it was too severely damaged. Then they wanted my to reuse a damaged part by drilling some new holes in it. It goes on and on. I still do not have a working machine and I’m still trying to get NEJE to help. They do respond to the forum with only a day or two delay, but they aren’t really helping me. They should have just replaced the entire damaged assembly. But for reasons unknown to me they won’t. So I have a two year warranty for a damaged machine for which they expect me to be the repair technician but they aren’t providing me the parts I need to fix it. I think I’ve lost $1000+ dollars on this venture. So, to all of your viewers, the product looks good to me, the design seems to be outstanding, but do not expect great customer support or warranty service. You are rolling the dice in this purchase as it ships from China in a card board box that cannot hold up to rough handling. That’s a long journey to the US with a lot of transfers. You could get unlucky like me and have a delivery person who roughly handles packages.

    Without a way to adequately remove the gasses created by cutting acrylic, it's not a case of if you'll have a fire but when. The gasses get trapped in the honeycomb cells and can then easily ignite. I would never advise people to run a laser with the honeycomb flat against the work surface. Even those strips that Dennis added to raise it up a little are not sufficient to create enough airflow.
    Finally, no mention whatsoever of an enclosure to protect you from all that particulate matter. If you've never heard of P2.5 particles I suggest you look them up... The dangers of exposure to them are very real and can also end up being deadly. Never, ever run any kind of laser, diode, CO2 or fiber without adequately enclosing it and having suitable ventilation. Lecture over for the day ;-)

    I bought a small Neje laser printer perhaps 5 years ago. It has a limited travel (150 x 150) but, with effort, I can move the laser or workpiece and make much larger etchings. I have used it for engraving on wood, leather and plastic. It’s great but I don’t find it accurate enough for templates. The width of the cut/burn is quite wide. I’ve been thinking about a much larger machine to cut very accurate templates and/or multiple items (20 of this or 30 of that). Rightly or wrongly (please comment) I am looking at a desk top CNC router set up. It will probably be only 1200 x 1200 as that’s enough for almost everything I do and, like most shops, space is not infinite.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 7 měsíci

      I think they are more accurate now. The base is sturdy enough to be straight on itself. With my former Neje, the max 2, this was a proces that took some time to get it square. But after that, it was very accurate. This one should be even more accurate. And the spot is 0.06x0.06. You will not get this size with other Diode or Co2 lasers. If I did not have the opportunity for a professional Co2 laser, this would be my laser for my shop.

    How much different does the air assist make?

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 7 měsíci +1

      All the difference. You need air assist. This amount of air assist is not to create a better cut, but more to avoid the lens from becoming dirty. You need to clean the lens regularly. Without air assist, you will have to clean it too much and with large projects, it gets dirty during work.

      There are more angles to look at woodworking. Some do everything with analog tools, other like to use power tools instead. I think "different" is the right approach. Not good or bad! I think a lot of woodworkers do have a CNC machine in their shop. I bet they still enjoy everything they do and even expand the possibilities they can create. So, you indeed could say progress.

    A laser without an enclosure to block unintended reflections and remove toxic/corrosive fumes is just asking for trouble. Please at least set a good example by filming yourself wearing the proper eye protection (though I wouldn't trust the glasses included in these cheap kits ... invest in some proven high end ones because you only get one set of eyes).

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I was just reviewing this unit, because of that I had it open. I do not use a diode laser normally, so a Co2 laser is much more secure. But I get your point, and will address this more when I do another review.

    • @ex-nerd

      @@HookedonWood Thanks. It's so important to set a good example. Maker's Muse did a really good video earlier this year (I think) on safety of these diode lasers. I know a few of the Chinese makers have also started selling enclosures for them that make them a bit safer for both light and fume extraction.
