T1N Sprinter Limp Home Mode, How to Reset Without Stopping!

  • In this short video Bill shows us how to get our vans out of Limp Home Mode without stopping on the side of the road. Limp Home Mode, or LHM is your van telling you something is wrong & preventing damage to itself. We do not recommend driving far in LHM or resetting it frequently, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t done it thousands of times with no ill effect. As you can see in the slow motion, Bill has practiced this too much!
    This affiliate link will take you to our recommended OBD2 coder scanner. Autel AP 200 is very helpful in diagnosing why your Sprinter van goes into Limp Home Mode. amzn.to/3h2gLY0

    This is definitely your best video until now. I especially like the PowerPoint presentation you have running in the background with all the informative causes for limp mode including h1 N1, El nino, mother-in-law sneezing. It is hilarious I still have to go back and figure out what you're trying to say about rolling reset.

    I figured out how to do this as a teenager driving my mom's Dodge Neon. I would recommend shifting into neutral then turning off and on. I liked doing it to freak my mom out but nothing bad ever came from doing it :)

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  Před 4 lety +2

      In a Sprinter with auto transmission, if you shift into Neutral you will need to come to a complete stop before you can accelerate again. Simply setting back to Drive will not resume normal travel like an older automatic car. The computer knows.

    • @barrygill2637
      @barrygill2637 Před 3 lety

      I found this out the hard way. My dog knocked the shifter into neutral on a two lane road with an 18 wheeler behind me. Tried putting it back in gear and nothing. Had to come to almost a complete stop before computer would recognize the shifter was back in Drive. I made that truckers day! Modern technology at its finest. NOT!

    Thank you for this video! My 2003 T1N goes to limp mode intermittently, sometimes I'll do this and it's good for the whole trip or several. Other times, it'll go limp several times in one trip. New fuel filter & MAF. Fuel lines are good(no air bubbles). Does cracked boost plumbing cause intermittent limp or is it usually a more consistent failure? No check engine light.

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  Před rokem +1

      Cracked hose will do that. So many things can change the boost pressure, even daily temperature, so some day the cracked hose will be a bigger problem and some days forgotten. A hose crack will usually grow and become easier to find and I often try* to help folks who are certain they don't have a hose crack but have all the symptoms. :)

    Can this be done with no key only push button start?

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  Před 4 měsíci

      T1N Sprinters don't have push button start, to my knowledge. I would not try this in any other vehicle without first practicing in a controlled location like closed parking lot. Other vehicles might not react well to this reboot. Gasoline cars will likely backfire or explode a muffler. Other diesels may not restart and lose power brakes and power steering, perhaps even lock the steering wheel.

    With doing this not engaged the starter motor? And destroy it? It precisely because you're doing it quickly that it doesn't engage the starter motor?
    Thanks!

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  Před rokem +1

      There are three reasons the starter does not engage. First, I don't tun the key to the starter position. The sequence is off & on, never going to start. Another reason being the van's ECM is smart enough to refuse engaging the starter whenever the engine is running, based on whether or not the alternator is charging. Finally, the van is in Drive gear so again the ECM will refuse to engage the starter. Selector must be in Park or Neutral, engine off and key must be turned a full position further against spring resistance.

      @@FloridaVanMan Hey thanks so much for replying! The only reason I worry is because my old Mercedes 508d bus. It had a dodgy hot wire set up to drive it, and the mechanism slipped whilst driving, engaging the starter motor, shredding it to bits. Now, that bus was alot older so perhaps it didn't have this smart ECM thing to refuse engaging. Also I'm in the UK so I drive manual not automatic, is it still the same? Many thanks.

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  Před rokem +1

      @@glenwelsh402 We didn't get any manual transmission Sprinters over here but all the manuals I've driven require the clutch pedal depressed to spin the starter motor. So I think your van is as safe as mine to do a rolling reset.

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  Před 9 měsíci

      Resetting the ECM, whether stopped or rolling, only takes you out of limp mode. It doesn't give the van super-powers or chest-kicking force. That force you felt, is what the van should offer every day.
      The van won't start when in drive, so I'm unclear what you were trying to say. Let's get it running right... patreon.com/Florida_Van_Man?Link&

    Thank you Bill - Limp Mode is more dangerous than a mother in laws tongue when dealing with road trains and small thin country roads here in Australia. Mercedes dealer also have no idea how to fix but can charge you a lot of money to prove it? I will certainly trial this method of resetting - last trip of 1000km had over 80 limp mode pull over resets with no dash light indication as to issue - again dangerous narrow roads, minimal shoulder, 100km per hour (60mph) speed limit, busy country road and I had my 2 grandchildren with me - never again Mercedes never again. Someone with some money should really consider a class action against this money grabbing insanely dangerous foolishness. Flashing dash warning lights yes, but not no warning decrease in speed - people are going to get hurt if they haven't already? As you can tell very angry so will stop rant now - apologies

      I agree has been happening to me a lot lately Mark shutting down due to low fuel rail pressure very dangerous on multi lane high speed interstate with no shoulder. In these shut downs I do not think Bill's trick will work on a total shut down but will work in limp mode. Thank-you for the excellent video Bill and yes Mercedes should be sued for this dangerous nonsense sign me up.
