It has everything you want in one bait and doesn't have all the negatives that come with other baits. This home made perfect bear bait is easy to make, not expensive, doesn't rot or go bad, no maggots, or other bad crap to deal with. Just a simple highly functional bear bait that works and holds the bears on your bait sight for a long time.

put it in 55 gallon drum and mix with ice auger, it works great.

I doubt that I need to make as inviting of a mixture as that where I will be hunting as there will not be much in terms of hunting pressure but I like the fact that this keeps them at the station longer so I will probably go with something similar. Thanks for the video

Ive utilized a similar bait strategy in WI with a few differences and it works by far the best for me as the bait doesnt go bad if it gets wet. Bears want fresh food. Wet soggy, or moldy bait wont work very well.
Yep and in michgan on public you can't use a bucket or artificial cover. Only dead logs

Pulled a tag in WI and will be hunting for the first time this fall. Maybe a silly question, but how do you store your bait/bait materials at home? Any issues with ants or anything? Love the channel!
I never had any critters or pests get into my baits in the garage. But I can see how it could happen. I'd put the stuff in bags or buckets if I needed to. But again never had a problem and had hundreds of pounds stored in my garage for over a month at a time.

Loved your presentation and detailed explanation of your "custom" bear bait. I expect to pull a tag for first season this year and will be hunting private land on the Garden Peninsula in the UP; roughly a 4 1/4 hour hike for me from my house. Baiting represents the biggest single challenge as I can't really pop up there every day or every other day to bait. Similarly, even if I were fortunate enough to find a local to bait for me, it might be asking a lot to have them prep the mix each time. Therefore, I am keenly interested in your answers to a couple of related questions: 1) Assuming that you use a 55 gallon drum or barrel for your bait station, can you please advise me how you modified the barrel to accommodate this bait? 2) I bought a couple of steel drums, but unsure how and where to cut in the holes for the bears to reach in. If the barrel top is not removable or a hinged lid, how do you put the bait in and how much at a time? 3) How often do you have to bait? 4) Is there any reason NOT to put more in the barrel than the couple of gallons shown? 5? What do you use to hang up high in a tree around your bait station to send scent out with the wind? Really appreciate your assistance on this; thanks!
Great questions. I have to put bait right on the ground as I'm hunting public land in Michigan. No barrels allowed. So I cant help much there. I would cut a hole in the barrel for the bear to be able to reach his hand in and chain it to a tree so he cant tip it over. I also never hung anything in a tree to scent but would spray Carmel or vanilla all over the trees around the bait site. If you are only gonna get up there once a week or so I would fill the barrel so there is always bait there and just make the hole so they have to work hard to get it and cant whipe it all out to fast.

I'm thinking of cutting my hole - - maybe two, one on either side - - about a third of the way down the drum and large enough to enable a large bear paw to get in there and root around some. Then I could fill it up to just under the bottom of the hole(s) in hopes that it will last up to a week. If I were to mix a significantly larger batch ahead of time, say enough to fill a 20 gallon trash can, do you suppose it would last OK for awhile, not harden up, so someone could go in for me and just replenish the barrel without having to mix a batch up? I'm thinking that the custom bear bait could be scooped right into the same holes that the bears would have to use to get at it. Once the hunt is "ON," I'll be on site and can bait every day if need be. Otherwise, it could be a week or two between visits up there. Related question: Do have a ready source for frying grease? I'm in Gladwin. Thanks again.
@@blackhillsdeercamp7923 sounds like a great plan. I think it would work great. Also talk to the movie theaters around you and get left over pop corn and top off the barrel with that as an extra bonus. It's cheap and light weight and bears love it. Get your grease by asking local restaurants to save it for you when they clean there fryers.

take a drill and a cement mixer end, add water if its too thick, water will evaporate as the mix ages. you can mix all this 1-2 week before baiting

Seungjae I dont hunt with a gun personally. I use a longbow for everything. But as guns calibers go any deer rifle will work great. 44 mag, 45-70, 30/30, 308, 30-06, 7mm, etc. All great deer, bear calibers.

Weapon choice is wide, as an arrow can kill a bear. By me black bear are very fatty so you want a good exit wound. You want a heavy expanding bullet. For this 30-06 is my choice.
I have hunted other states were the bear are small and lean. Good blood trail is not an issue with them.

This is great! Do you just dump it on the ground or leave the bucket of bait out there?
depends on the laws where you are hunting. If you can leave it in the pail just flip the bucket over and put a big rock or a log on it to keep racoons out of it.
@@tradbowpodcast I have some private land and there are no restrictions in OK. I border the 35,000 acre Wister wildlife management area with a lake within a couple of miles in LeFlore County OK (which is the kind of "hub" for black bears in OK).
I will only be able to get out to the land a couple of times a month and don't want the coons to eat everything up.
I'm also willing to hunt as many raccoons as needed to reduce the population if need be....if that's even possible.
Do you use real maple syrup or the corn starch (ms butterworths) type?
What ever they sell in 5 gallon buckets at feedmibear.com. I dont think the bears are picky about the flavor. The syrup is just part of the catalyst that holds it all together.

I use the stuff below in the video. But it's worth checking with them as they have so many other great bait products as well if you want to change it up.

Maple syrup
Cherry or other syrup flavoring
Hard candy.

How often do you have to replenish the bait with this amount of mixture generally?
Daily if a bear hits it. I like only having a enough to hold a bear for an hour or 2. This way it creates competition and makes bears come in earlier to make sure they are there in time to get some.

This will be my first time hunting Bears on my property how far in advance should I start baiting and how often do you have to bait...
Are they like a deer that will feed all through the night. Any advice will be appreciated.
I would start baiting a few weeks before the season and about every 2 or 3 days until they get regular. then bait daily if needed. Dont give them too much. You want to create competition for the bait. give them a half of 5 gallon bucket each time is my advise.

Michigan law required us to dump on the ground. If you can leave the bucket drill it and wire it to a tree upside down with a boat under it to keep coons and squirrels out of it.

Dale MacKenzie we have to put it right on the ground here. But if you can use a barrel that even better. I just put it on the ground and cover it with logs as that's all we can do here
In Wisconsin we use about a 2 foot long hollow log and cover it with a good size rock to keep the Raccoon out and then throw some logs over it too
@@trippw88 containing the bait without a container is just stupid. Clearly anti's made that rule.
Other states require things like registering stand sites, contact info of owner, and such. If a container in the woods is an issued do something like that.

To require the bait be unexcessable to deer without the use of a container is stupid. A container is the easiest most effective way to comply and yet it can't be used. Probably to trip people up so DNR can fine people for revenue and steal...I mean confiscate animals they want.

Nope no problem at all. Bears like deer and other animals can distinguish and separate scents together. Where we smell breakfast, they smell the bacon, eggs, toast, all seperate.

@@loganmckenzie510 you will be all good with mixing. The Canadian bear guide I learned this recipe from said the more scents in the mix the better.

@@dalepearson8475 Yes they can, and do. But Michigan Law will not let us use any barrels, buckets, etc. all bait has to be put on the ground and can only be covered with dead natural logs.

The black bear population has exploded here in upper Columbia County NY. No one I know hunts them. I've had bear meat prepared in multiple ways. It had a noticeable taste unlike venison. What do you do with the bear?
I eat them! Best tasting wild meat there is in my opinion. tast just like beef but a little bolder. reason is they act more like cattle and less stressed muscle tissue. Unlike prey species that are stringy and tough, bear meat is very tender and easier to eat. Love a good bear steak!

Yeah that's weird wont go past a min for me either. It's been going for a year without any problems so must be something with CZcams right now. But its granola, syrup, peanut butter, cotton candy flavored syrup, corn, and hard candies.
