    I've only tried popcorn once and had no luck with it. The poor weathering of popcorn is also a concern. I also struck out pretty badly with savory bait. Best luck so far for me has been sweet baits (candy, pastries) with a dog food base. I must say though that these videos have me thinking of adding granola or trail mix instead of the dog food. Don't have a cheap source though.

    I'm from Alaska, i have bean bear baiting for years. the best i have found is ANIS very strong smell that is and has been my number 1 scent. bears come to the smell, then they will relate that to food once they come in and see your bear bait

    • @BowhuntingRoad
      @BowhuntingRoad  Před 2 lety

      Anise has been very overused in areas of the US and Canada where the bears receive significant hunting pressure. For this reason it doesn't get much use these days because people say the bears are conditioned to it. Can't say for sure if that's true or not.

    The best bait is natural. Putting the bait pile under acorn trees or natural food sources helps. Chocolate is illegal here in Michigan.

    I have a bunch of buckets of Peanut butter and buckets of Cake Frosting. I was thinking of mixing it with Corn or Oats. Oats costs almost twice as much as corn. Am I money ahead to go with the oats anyway or in your opinion, is one just as good as the other. Do you see a better way to utilize the Peanut butter or icing. I was also thinking of popping a bunch of pop corn but that just sounds like a LOT of work when I could get whole or rolled corn for $23.00 per 100 lbs.

    • @BowhuntingRoad
      @BowhuntingRoad  Před rokem +1

      I would not even mix it. Just put it out there in the best way you can. Rolled oats keeps the bears coming back pretty well, but just straight oats goes right through them. Corn can work well if there aren't many other options for them, but when I have used corn to cut bait costs, it's the last thing they eat and the crows and ravens get most of it.

    Have taken about 15 bears with popcorn and a juice crystal mix. Yes you have to keep the wet off of it. But it works and works great. Matter of fact other then using beaver popcorn is all I use in my 5 bait circuit.

    • @BowhuntingRoad
      @BowhuntingRoad  Před 2 lety +1

      All depends on the area, the competition with other baiters and the availability of natural foods. In some areas, you'd never hold bears with that, but in some it works. Add beaver to anything and it helps. We can't use beaver in most US states.

      @@BowhuntingRoad not too many people hunt bear because they wont eat them. I've asked if they actually tried it and most say no. I see 2 in the center of town a few times a month proving they need to be managed. They get to be good size living as care free and for as long as they do. People like to see them around I understand that but that doesn't mean turning your front yard into a buffet. That does more harm adding to the bear in town problem without negative repercussions for the bear actions. If people disrespect wildlife putting animals in a wrong cycle or force a different habit we lose the beauty of nature. If we can put an emotional value on the bears here in western Massachusetts respect them and hunt them in their natural habitat we wont have "garbage bears" people want "eliminated" out of lack of respect, knowledge, and effort to bring the population up to huntable numbers. I tell people if you still want black bears in 100 years in the area hunt them now or they may be eradicated as a pest people view them as. Hunting is pro life it's just people dont understand it. And I hunt everything I can in my state.
