    Nice job, love seeing a young man like yourself getting out and excited about bear. One thing i do is hang an old tee shirt up that I have worn for a few days, that leaves my scent at the site and critters do get used to it, so they are less spooked if they catch wind of you while in your stand. Good luck this 2020 season

    I’m starting a new bait this year on my land in maine but I was thinking we was not a lot to use animal bait if that’s the cause I know a lot of people in Canada use beaver. And when I shot my bear years ago the guide had me get in the tree and he went to the bait and baited it and he was banging the bucket on the barrel he said he does that same banging every time he baits so the bears isn’t the area says hey food is here

    Thanks for the video. Lots of good info. One thing I might add is to set and check your camera before setting the bait. Otherwise you can lead them to it with the scent on your shoes from the bait site.

      Thanks for the comment Jake! I typically check my camera after I bait because I usually bait every 3 days. My cameras are usually full by the time I check my camera/bait. So I like to check my camera afterwards and exchange SD cards so that there are no photos on the camera when I leave. Sometimes I carry in 2-4 buckets at a time With grease/bait and whatever. So If I have my camera delay on for 10 seconds.. You get like 20 videos of you just placing bait and grease and putting logs back in and the cover back on.
      I appreciate the comment though. So far I have been lucky doing it this way and I haven't lost a camera yet.

    changing your gloves for the camera makes sense but arent you still dragging the scent over on your boots?

    • @dschaeffer1833
      @dschaeffer1833 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, you are. My thought process is that my boots don’t touch my camera or touch the tree. The tree my camera is on never gets hit with bait scent. When I’m baiting and spraying around my site, I’m walking all around the site. I’m assuming they are use to that. But again this is what I do, and I’ve never had a camera get destroyed by a bear.

    • @dschaeffer1833
      @dschaeffer1833 Před 4 lety

      Hi Jason,
      I’ve never used corn in large quantities. However, I’ve heard of and seen damage from bears tearing up a farmers corn crops. I’ve had really good luck with peanut butter. So I’m thinking that combo will work for you. This year is looking to be a good year too with how dry it has been, so I’m thinking the bear won’t be as picky at bait sites this year! Good luck and let us know how you do! And thanks for watching, we appreciate the support!

    $250-300 in fuel round trip.
    Too hard and expensive to bait often.

    how long does a fresh site take to be hunt able

    • @TheMaineHunt
      @TheMaineHunt  Před 4 lety +2

      Jordan Little It can vary for sure. Truthfully, this bait site picked up quick. He had a bear hit this site within 30 hours. He ended up having I think 9 different bears hitting it in the first 2 weeks. That being said, the more time you give them to get into a routine, the better. We have a month of baiting here in Maine before you can hunt, and we would recommend utilizing that full month especially on a new site. Hope that helps!

    I'm considering doing a Bear Bait this year and it would be my first year doing a Bear Bait. How do you get the sites without the leases? I've been watching for a specific area where I want to hunt but it's all paper company land and they only do leases but usually nothing becomes available because they give the guides first dibs. Is there any other ways to find some bait sites? I'm gonna be talking to some stores and see if maybe I can get some old Donuts and pastries. How often do you bait? I was thinking maybe bait once a week but leave a lot of bait so they have enough for the week.

    • @TheMaineHunt
      @TheMaineHunt  Před 3 lety

      Hey! It is tough with certain land that is leased, like paper company land. You basically have to find land that is privately owned or state/town owned, and get written permission. It can be difficult unfortunately. If you can, message us on our Instagram and Dan Schaeffer could give you some direction on how often to bait, etc. Thanks for the comment!

    • @davidgrant8994
      @davidgrant8994 Před 3 lety

      Unfortunately I don't have Instagram. I will keep looking. Paper companies really don't make it fair for hunters but it's their land. Not much we can do about it.

      @@TheMaineHunt So a year later, I gave up trying to get the leased sites. The landowner I think was kind of running me around. They basically give everything to the guides and screw everybody else. I was pretty discouraged but a couple months ago, I found out that the state of Maine has Bait sites nearby so I'm going to try to get one of those sites this year. Last year, I found a lot of Bear sign in the Berry Patches and along an old clear cut that had started to regrow. What surprised me was this Bear came out into the open. I didn't think a Bear would just roam out in the open like that but this one did. It was interesting noticing that Berries were picked clean early. There wasn't as many Berries as previous years but a lot of wildlife including Bear repeatedly came back to check for Berries. I'm guessing with the drought, they were a little extra hungry. I cut a track on Yogi one morning and to say tracking Bear is nearly impossible in an understatement. This Bear quickly went into some of the most unfriendly places to walk I've ever seen. I did notice quite a bit of Moose sign and it paralleled the Moose sign for quite a while. I'm guessing it was looking for a nice delicious Moose Calf to eat. While tracking this Bear, it went up and around active logging. I could hear the machines from where I was and they were close. I gave up trying to track Bear when Booboo decided he wanted to take a leisurely stroll straight through a swamp with quicksand and mud that could swallow a logging machine. Hopefully this year is better and I'm hoping to get one of the nearby bait sites that the state has. I've got to find a reliable bait source first if I do get the bait site. Good luck this season.

    • @dschaeffer1833
      @dschaeffer1833 Před 4 lety +1

      Hey! I only ran 1 site last year. Which can make it tough to put all your eggs in one basket but I’ve been hunting private land. So it can be a little difficult to find more than 1 site that way.

    • @dschaeffer1833
      @dschaeffer1833 Před 2 lety +1

      Half the forest? How did we destroy half the forest? I can also do what I want on my land and I can do what a landowner gives me permission to do. If cutting shooting lanes and piling up deadfall and pouring some grease on the ground is destroying the forest to you, I’m not sure why you bother wasting anyone’s time watching this video and commenting on it.
