I’ve been a cop for 12 years. A long 12 years I can tell ya. I got off the road and became a school resource officer last November. It just got to be too much in today’s world. Folks just don’t know what cops see, seeing the underbelly of society. It’s a dark and lonely place. I’ve never been happier in my life than I am now at the school. I appreciate your message at the end buddy. Cops are convicted by the media and democrats before they even get a trial these days. It’s a sad world we’re living in.

I just had a great hunting experience with a cop recently! Our season in PA opened October 3rd. I was hunting an overlooked ridge 60 yards off the road this past Wednesday the 7th. I made a gut shot on a nice buck; backed out and gave it time. Came back, and saw a cop car with lights on pulled off the side of the road and then I look and see the tines of my buck laying there! He tried to cross the road to a small stream to get to water but didn’t make it. I rolled down the window and told the cop I just came here to track that buck. He said “I just wanted to make sure nobody took this buck; I saw the broadhead mark, and knew it was shot with a bow” I thanked him and he told me it was a nice buck and congratulated me on my harvest before he left and let me begin the work of gutting it and loading it into my truck.

I killed a heluva buck Oct 13 last year in public sitting on the ground. I snuck as close as I could to his bedroom with my wind just missing him. He walked by at 6:15 18 yards away. I don't think I would have had the confidence to set up that close without your guidance....thanks buddy.

The 5 second rule: Spend 100 hours scouting, 50 hours hunting your hunches and in 5 seconds, somewhere during the season, you see, qualify and kill the animal that’s worth waiting for. When the second guessing start, remind yourself of the 5 second rule. You just never know when it’ll drop in your lap.

Dan... I want to thank you for real world videos like this and your mentality. I am a later learner for hunting - grew up doing easy hunting (sit on stands), but only got into real hunting in my 50's. So my learning curve is steep. I took my first elk 7 years ago (have taken 3 more bulls since), but whitetail hunting largely eluded me (even though I live in a bountiful state full of deer - NC). I decided this past two seasons to focus on WT hunting and was blessed with two small bucks (my first bow kills) this past season. I am gifted at finding tons on sign in places that others don't (even on public land), but have been trying to piece together the mystery of what is all means. You are seriously helping me.
A lot of what I hunt are BIG woods in semi hill->mountainous terrain. A lot of it is very subtle transitions that aren't like cattails to trees - its more like big pines to littler ones, or denser hardwoods to less dense - plus lots of topo elements. Would love to pick your brain about some of these types of setups!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I started out hunting public land for the first 5 years and was successful. They weren't Giants but I put venison in the freezer. I was blessed with the opportunity of hunting private land for the last 35 years. I recently lost my lease because of a death. I'm back on public land and it has been a struggle. I have gone out 14 times and the only deer I have seen are the ones that were running away because they scented me as I was walking out there. So when you say dig deep I really know what you're talking about. I could easily give up because of my age I'm 54 now but I think you' may be older than me or around the same age. You are definitely tougher than me as I have watched your videos and you take things a little farther than I am used to. That is because I have gotten soft hunting private land. You are an inspiration bro and I'm not giving up. if I'm successful I'll send you a comment letting you know. I know I need to put in more work and get more Intel on the deer in the area that I'm hunting and be willing to go to other areas. Thanks for the words of determination.

I back the blue, like anything, including our hunting fraternity, there's a bad apple or two. But 99% of them, are quality people! Thanks Blue! Thankful for all of You's!!!!!
As for being in the woods, cattails, flatlands, swamps, whatever. I'm thankful just to be out there. Always seeing something that makes me smile, learning, even if it's a mistake. Some of the most exhilarating times I've had, is when I've been so close, could see the massive horns, but wouldn't offer me a clean kill shot. But the lesson / experience, was so exhilarating, damn near as good as a kill shot. It's something most people don't get to experience, maybe that makes it even more special. I wish more people could, I think we are special, as hunters, good/quality people, for the most part. Too bad the country couldn't be more like Us.😊

So as a new hunter this year I've had lots of up's and downs. No one in my family ever hunted before so I'm figuring it out as I go. Dont have any private access, so I'm Hunting public land I been doing my best to follow good etiquette but still keep having other hunters coming upon me in the woods (or waiting at my truck because I parked to close to "their" spot). I've had people steal Cards from cameras. I had a clear missed a shot on what would have been nice 6pt buck (30 yds it ducked, arrow was right inline where I thought it would be) and have had no action since while trying new spots and looking for fresh sign. This video was really encouraging to me, that it happens to even the most seasoned hunters and that I shouldn't get down on myself and focus on continuing to learn from each hunt and remind myself that I have been enjoying my time in the woods even if I don't see any whitetails that day. Thanks Dan

Same here in NC dan , the best week is the last week in October, with that lull they speak of is the peak of the acorn crop falling and the deer bedding in the trees , and along with that they see you if you come in to their block of woods , woods deer are the hardest to kill of any simply because they can see and hear every move you make.

I bet you picked up more viewers than you lost by being willing to risk the bad comments to say what’s right and stand up for what you believe in. You’re my favorite hunter to learn from. I watch all of them. THP, G2, whitetail instinct, born and raised guys, DIY and many more. Yours is the most raw depiction of what public land really is. I had the biggest buck of my life 15 yards broadside on the wrong side of a fence last one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Even tried to get call him over. That was to an extent since he was originally 70 yards away in a pasture. But ultimately he wouldn’t jump that fence. 1 1/2 miles back from the road and no one would have ever known. Most hunters probably would have taken the shot. Thank you for sharing the food and the bad. I’m a better hunter thanks to your videos.

Great video and I especially loved the message at the end. I’m not in law enforcement but I respect and thank those who are. Our police aren’t thanked enough. This past weekend our community here in Highland Village/North Texas came together to thank one very loved officer, good friend to all and a hunting buddy of mine. He had a passion for bow hunting. I had the honor of talking about what a good friend and servant leader he was. The procession had to be a mile long with probably 40 police cars leading the way. People stopped their cars and stood saluting our friend while fire departments along the way stood at attention as we drove under the flag they had hung in his honor. At the graveside, there was a 21 gun salute, a flyover and a bag pipe version of Amazing Grace. On the way to the car, I noticed some deer sign and thought this is a perfect place for him. The community showed their thanks to him and to his fellow officers in a big way this weekend. It was great to see and I really appreciate your message.

Personally I don't believe in the October "lull" simply because deer have to eat and drink and they move in order to do any of their normal activities. I've heard people say "well I think it's a lulled time because of an increase in nocturnal movement". To me that could be due to a number of things like increased hunting pressure and deer typically do the majority of their activities at night anyways. Just me but I don't buy it lol. I love your videos I've learned a lot, thanks Dan

Totally agree plus the days are getting shorter so we don't see as much movement.

When i mean lull i only mean no daylight movement. Tracked and seen by my camera and I’m talking about driving atv around few evenings a week and last night i think we saw 50. Moving right before dark.

October 15th here in CT and its still mid to high 60's for another week or maybe two. only down to 50 at night. still waiting for the temps to drop, I find it hard hunting in this hotter weather.

Good video Sir, solid knowledge with no frills. My property is wired for sound, I monitor trail cameras continuously throughout the year. I see the same patterns year after year. Hunting season starts which has the surrounding properties filling up with human movement, even though we try and slip in undetected, within two weeks those mature bucks go straight nocturnal. For my area, which is Southern WI, I start seeing day light movement again roughly the 3rd week of October with peek daylight activity Oct 28th through Nov 7th. I'm sure that differs from property to property based on a lot of factors. Bottom line, my opinion, the October Lull is created from hunting pressure. NOV 3rd is a big one, lets vote right!

Thanks Dan for speaking at the end. My oldest son in law is a 20 yr LEO (SWAT cdr) and you are dead on. Those guys are gonna be the ones running into the hell if it breaks out. For the Public land, its already been said below, good channels like you and THP and others are teaching ALL of us how to be better hunters. It shows we're really studying what you teach, not just watching for entertainment (although a good possum chase never hurt anyone). Keep it coming buddy

OMG what a timely video! Just yesterday my heart was broken when I finally had the right wind to hunt a spot so remote and difficult to get to that I would have bet $100 no one would go there during bow season (possibly when rifle starts). As I searched out a spot where I could cross a creek with my knee boots, my heart sank when I saw very, VERY fresh boot prints. They were so fresh the hunter could have walked in just before me. Certainly there were no older than that morning. This is one of those areas that simply will not tolerate much pressure, because it borders bedding, and these deer have enjoyed solitude for years. But someone else has found it too. And now I'm not sure what to do.

Your opening remarks summoned up the so called October lull well. My own observations lead me to believe that bachelor groups are breaking up and the opening of pheasant season has a huge impact of deer moving into deeper cover and not moving into the fields and open areas until after legal shooting hours. I’m not banging on pheasant hunters as they have just as much right as I do to use the public lands. Good luck all.

I’m not much of a Trump fan and definitely lean more left than right now a days but I also think it’s radical to want to dismiss the police. Like you said if anything went bad they’re the first people I’d call 100%. I just wish there was a more effective way to pick and choose police officers who are great at their job because there are certainly some that are not good at what they do. But I also respect fully what you’re saying and feel that same way about police. I Love this country! Keep being true to yourself as always my man! 🇺🇸🇺🇸
