Thanks for the video, very helpful. I did mine today on a 2010 XC60 with 84,000mi. Much to my surprise, the fluid was very clean, only slightly darker than new fluid. Having seen the fluid on vehicles a few years newer and with much fewer miles I was worried what I would pull out of there. I used an oil extractor which did take some time and I got out about 450ml, but it seemed like I was able to put in closer to 600ml. Overall not too difficult. Next step is Haldex service, I will do a refresher of your video on that service. Thank you for putting these videos together, you do a great service for the Volvo DIY community.

Just watched your angle gear video and you said you needed to extract 50 ml of fluid after filling the rear end. Just wanted to put that in the comments so others know to do it when they change their rear diff fluid.
I can't believe how bad the fluid looks after only 34k miles! Gotta do this soon on our S80 AWD.

Great video. (I posted something similar on your angle gear videos so looks similar but a little different as ask specific question about angle gear vs rear gear) I’m looking to do this to my Volvo’s in the relatively near future. I've got a 2013 S60 T6 R-Design AWD and a 2015 XC60 T6 AWD. They both have the codes B6304T4 (Engine) and TF-80SC (transmission info).
When watching your video on changing the angle gear fluid, you mention removing 50 ml in the rear gear as well. Do you know if extracting 50 ml is required for the rear axle gears in my vehicles as well? How did you figure that out as everyone I asked including 3rd party shops that work on Volvo’s don’t show a maintenance schedule so therefore have no info on how to change the fluid? I’m guessing that mine have the same angle gear as the one you show, but don’t really know.
Also, removing 50 ml with a hose connected doesn’t account for amount of oil in the hose, so maybe should remove a little less I would guess. Better to be slightly overfull, then under full, right?
Do you know if the rear gear is vented at the top?
Was also wondering what made you settle on the mileage as to when to do it? Was it based on years? On a lot of maintenance schedules I’ve seen for rear gears on other brands of vehicles, I’ve read 80,000 km - 95 km (50K- 60K miles) or there about is fine, especially if synthetic oil was used which is what Volvo put in it.
I'm also thinking about going with a Red Line gear oil that is an API GL 5+ 75W90 or 75W85. It's a high performance synthetic gear oil and I've run their oils in the past with great success. On something like this the most important thing is to put in an oil that meets the GL5 spec as long as it’s within range as for the weight of oil so I’ve always been told. I know for sure do not put in a GL4 spec oil as that is more for a lot of manual transmissions.

Thanks for your various Video tutorial on Volvo maintenance. You’re doing a great job.keep it up 👍
I’m regularly performing similar jobs and wanted to make a comment o rear differential oil replacement, purely based on my observations. I have done the exact same procedure on my own as well and friends Volvo XC60’s and to my surprise each time I have managed to extract anything between 650ml - 700ml fluid but to fill up the rear diff up to the oil inspection level it took 850ml - 900ml. Is this normal? Each XC60 I worked on hasn’t had any oil leaks from the diff and travelled approximately 150-200k kilometres. I’m wondering whether these cars are under filled in the factory by around 200ml. Food for thoughts…

Is it possibly due to oil expansion when oil gets hot as Volvo diff does not have a breather unlike a conventional differential?

  • @VoGRoN
    @VoGRoN Před 4 lety +1

    Hi Guys,
I'm planning to replace the rear axle/differential fluid on my 2011MY XC70 D5.
Based on the VIDA it requires 1161620 (GL-5 80W) fluid which is discontinued since a while. The angle/bevel gear is requires 31259380 (GL-5 75W-90).
Since the original 1161620 is discontinued the successor is the same as the angle gear oil - 31259380 which is a different viscosity oil.
So basically I have two questions:
    - Is it possible to use oils from other companies with GL-5 80W-90 viscosity in the rear axle? (80w vs 80w-90)
    or
    - should I buy GL-5 75W-90 oil and use it both on angle and differential gears?
To be honest I don't want to buy Volvo fluids if I can replace them with the same quality on the half price of the OEM fluids.
    Thank you for the help!
