- Ho to change rear differential fluid on non-Haldex P2 Volvo's. I ended up using Fuchs 75W90 oil which is compatible with the Volvo OEM fluid part #31259380. Drain plug washer is same size as oil sump plug washer. Socket size for drain plug is 12mm. Note that recommended torque is 28ft-lb / 35N-m. At one point I mention 35ft-lb which is incorrect.

That looks like way more fun than doing a manual gearbox fluid change, i cant wait.
Thank you very much for the video. It helped me to change my rear differential oil for 2004 XC70. After change the oil the car goes very smooth. The oil oil was super dirty, as I'm the 3rd owner and mileage is 213000km, so I'm not sure previous owner change it or not. Next is to change bevel Gear oil and its difficult to open the 13mm bolt.
Joshua Ananth are you sure the bolt is not 12mm - make sure you double check. Would be a shame to strip it!
@@Bigtime_mcalpine I am very sure its 13mm because after seeing your video I plugged in 12mm and I cant fit in. Then I use 13mm and it fit it. Maybe the oil was changed and they changed the drain plug too.. I was taking caution because in your video it was 12mm. Thank you for your advice.
It is 13mm but 1/2 inch socket works actually the best.
I am doing it asap thanks
I have read somewhere that you remove 50ml for the front and 100ml for the rear differential, but I can't check if these figures are good for 2006 xc70. Also, for this car, is the size of the fill/drain plugs 13mm? Thank you.
no extracting for leveling after filled?
I think I will just fork over the $200 to have the shop do it 😂
I got a electric pump from Amazon, which made it much easier.
Hello! Thank you for the video! I'm going to repeat the same procedure on my Volvo, could you please tell what the outer diameter of the syphon pump tubing is? Thank you very much!
Kostiantyn Vasylevskyi 7mm OD and it was a tight fit.
Bigtime McAlpine, thanks a ton!
Good day. How much oil should be in the gearbox? How much did you fill up before it was full?
David Mrhač volvo instructions aren’t to fill until it begins to overflow. It’s about 700ml when full.
Does the car have to be level when filling? Thanks
pgreenx yes
It is 13 mm.
how often should one do this ?
bada bing volvo says “lifetime” but many suggest changing every 20-50k miles. There is no maintenance schedule for this.
Is this car AWD ? I don't see a haldex .
loopludotcom it’s an 02 AWD - no haldex, vicious coupler instead.
@@Bigtime_mcalpine Its a Haldex product..
@@sebastiant8049 early models were with vicious. I have also
haldex SPETIAL OIL

See notes on oil for angle gear (front)
Friendly tip for others. The transfer case(angle gear on transmission) and far rear diff use the gear lube... the haldex(what the guy is working on in this video)requires haldex fluid not plain gear lube.. don't make the same mistake as this guy.
SKYNET there is no Haldex on an 02, Skynet. A change was made to the AWD system on these bad boys in 03 which incorporated the Haldex into the design.
@@Bigtime_mcalpine What about 2006 xc70? Is the situation similar to yours?
@@lev1g 2006 has the Haldex 3 if I'm not mistaken. Filter is about 10 oclock on the AOC.
