  • Update: I have done about 2000km, and everything is still good.
    It's a long video, if you have any questions just ask them in the comments.
    It might not be the best way of doing things but it worked for me.
    Tightening torques: Pinion nut (41mm socket) 250 Nm and then 1 deg increments until rotational torque is 1.1 +- 0.2 Nm (These are from Land Rover manual: www.s80.dk/DIY/rearDiff/misc/... ).
    The video contains all the bearing and seal numbers. The kit cost 200€ off Ebay + Haldex filter, oil, and diff oil. Took me a bit over a day including the tool searching and making.
    The thing I made for measuring rotational torque looks as it looks just because I only had one type of springs to use so I had to keep adding them to get to the right Nm scale.

    great video. Helped me rebuild the rear diff on my 2011 S60. The main issue I had was getting the new races to seat without them getting jammed in the diff housing. Putting the race in the freezer and heating the diff housing helped to get the race seated squarely and not get cock-eyed in the housing.

      Thats good idea, it was tricky to get them in there

    Very well done, and documented. Helped alot just to make sure I don't buy a damaged used car just to turn around and have to complete that task. But if I do have to do it, Your method was the best, and I would try to source the tools in advance. Great!!!!THanks!!!!

    Wonderful video, thanks. I got exactly the same job coming up. I really wasn’t looking forward to doing this, especially without garage or lift. Thanks to your video I can plan at least ahead!

    Love the 780 content!
    Great video! I’m about to do this rebuild on my 2011 Xc60.( I just swapped out a supposedly good used carrier/ diff but the replacement is now also noisy..😢) I have an xc60, a P2 xc70, a 2010 xc90 and a 91 780 ( with m90 and 960. 3.31 diff) as well…I’ve parted out 3x 780s and have lots of spare parts if you need any parts, though shipping might be crazy from Canada. Keep up the great vids!

    Hi, thx for very informative video. 👍I have a question. I have v40cc awd with haldex 5 and there is a low, bass sound coming out of the rear part but only when car is acceralating. It is especially noticeable when there is a high gear engaged e.g.5th and I accelerate. When I take out haldex fuse there is no such sound-the car accelerates quietly. Did you have similar sounds? Did the repair fix it? :)

    Have you replaced the gear oil in the final drive/rear diff before it made noise?

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  Před rokem

      No, I bought the car like that. I did try it before replacing the bearings but made no difference. I think failing bearings are caused by wrong bearing preload when assembled.

    What are the two types of oil needed for that project?! 75 - 90. And?

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  Před rokem +1

      And Volvo (or Febi) haldex oil. It's a special oil so I am not sure of the marking.

    Hello, I have a question if you are kind, I have a volvo xc 90 2.4 d awd 185 cv geartonic from 2007 and it has a problem with the bearings in the rear differential and I don't know where to find them and what reference they have, please advise how I can fix it and if you know what is needed and where to buy, thank you very much, I live in France

      If you go to UK ebay and search "xc90 rear differential bearings" you will find a kit for about 200 pounds

    Which type clutch disk did u use for the tool

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  Před 10 měsíci

      I did not use a clutch, just a spring as you have to measure rotational torqu. You have to measure torque while rotating the shaft.

    May I ask what your symptoms were?

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  Před rokem +1

      Whining noise which sounded like wheel bearing. On the hoist I could clearly hear it coming from the diff.
