I've been trying to steer clear of everything related to this event since it started because I don't trust news outlets as a whole, left or right, so take the fact that I tuned in to this video as soon as I saw it as a huge sign of how much trust you have earned from me (and many others I'm sure), and it's well deserved. Hey Rich, thanks for the great video. I don't want to come off as a mouth-breathing reply guy, but I notice you still say "the Ukraine". The reason Ukrainians don't like this is because it implies we are still part of Russia. According to Russia, we are "the borderland". But when Ukraine became independent, we dropped the "the" because we are nobody's borderland, we are our own country. And will continue to be.

A free room is all i can do to actually help unfortunately as i can't afford to run off to ukraine to fight lol. Most of this is very familiar to my ears, but thank you for the exposition, it certainly feels like it covers all the bases along the timeline very neatly up to the invasion. Truth be told, if there was one singular person that could have stopped the invasion, it must be Vladimir Putin. Even when compared to that ridiculous affair that was the Iraq war, even then, the casus belli for the invasion of Ukraine is on incredibly shaky ground to the point of being cartoonish. It would be comical, if it wasn't a tragedy of immense proportions. Neither NATO, the EU nor any of their members will be prepared to accept Putin's nuclear gambit. They don't want to fight a war on foreign soil for an outside power (that they've been cozying up to for many years). They don't want the loss of life, equipment, funds, or to risk the delivery of russian gas. And they certainly don't want to fight against an opponent that might just fire a nuke.
While that's all very practical politically, the USA, UK and Russia guaranteed Ukraine's safety when it essentially gave up its nukes. Ukraine is getting a middle finger from that deal, a free supply of easy to use weapons and sadly a guarantee to be defeated by the juggernaut.
I hate every part of this and I really shouldn't go on.
    Much appreciated content, Rich.

Something to note if you do more coverage on this. When Russia invaded in 2014 the equipment for the Ukrainian army did not work. They only had old USSR gear that was sitting in a warehouse for decades. This is likely why Putin has aimed for the whole country instead of the just the separatist regions.

The “acknowledgement of independence” of these “separatist states” was used mainly to disperse responsibility between Putin and his pawns in so-called Duma ("parliament"), as well as the band of his closer friends from "security council", that's dominated by checkists [, without calling it war]
The main pretense for attacking Ukraine, [which is how it is told by propaganda,] is "immense suffering of Russian contingent in Donetsk and Luhansk, approaching genocide" [implying that Putin or anyone of his chronies ever cared about one life]

Beautiful, this is what I was waiting for.
Watched most of this vid and it's great, good work from you as always.
Something worth noting is that this isn't the first time Russia has done this under Putin. In Georgia, they did the exact same thing - recognised two states within Georgia as independent and then invaded those states under the guise of protecting the civilians in those regions from the Georgian invaders.
Similar story in the Donbas, and if Putin succeeds, I suspect he'll do the same in Moldova with Transnistria (another breakaway Russian-supported area that has Russian troops stationed there).
Worth noting that in addition to my speculation, Belarus' dictator gave a military briefing to his security council or something, and the map had arrows pointing to Transnistria *on top of* the planned invasion routes in Ukraine.
