      It’s super easy, you just have to remember that roots need oxygen, so changing the water regularly is a must - I have a couple of bubblers in my favourite plants just to make sure they’re good. Also measure your PH if you can, I think between 5.5 and 6.5 is optimal for nutrient uptake

    I've got a lot more water culture plants now thanks to your channel. I love that I can see when I need to add water and it's way before there's no water and the plant dries out which is what happens in soil and yarn for me. Simple plants I can't grow in soil to save my life include wandering dude and spider plant believe it or not - they always die from either over or under watering. But in water culture with at least some of the roots exposed above water line they are doing fantastic. Your plants are looking lovely. Happy New Year!

    Hi Paul! I love your videos, and have already found plenty of solutions to some of the questions and teething problems I have experienced, switching to water culture. What I struggle to find information on, is the level at which the plants should be kept in the water. (How much root or should be submerged in the water?)
    I am looking forward to your future videos! Keep it up 😃👍

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yay!!! Thank you so much. From my experience, if you change the water more often, you can submerge all the roots. If you’re not changing out the water, I’d leave a little bit of root exposed to air to help with oxygen absorption. But each plant could potentially react differently. Basically, clean water is the key, from what I’ve experienced. 😃😃😃. Keep me posted!!! 🌱

    Hi! I'm new to hydroculture, and was wandering, how do you know what plant food to put in the water? There's just so many options.. Hummus? Mineral? A mix of both? Do you need different ones for succulents and for tropicals? how much to put in? Do you need to exchange the water entierly every week? If so, do you put the fertilizer in every time? Soo many questions, but the showcase of different plant genera growing just in water realy encourages me :), so thanks for the video! (Sorry for my spelling, im not a native english speaker :P) PS. Have you thout about puttin some background music in your vids? I think it would make them even better! :D

      Hello there. I used to have music but some people hated it and were very vocal about it lol. Any hydroponic fertilizer could work - I use orchid fertilizer for flowering plants in hydro and Maxigro for foliage plants. I use it at 1/4 strength or so but I feed at almost ever watering. I usually flush completely about once a month and that seems to work. Of course sometimes they go longer when life takes over but it’s a general rule. Tysm for watching. 😃😃😃

      @@juliasojda7834 hello there. Yup, I recently started adding some music. I like it better too. 😃😃😃. As far as nutrients, there are some great hydroponic nutrients available. I have two that I use, both are in the link in the video description. One is Maxigro, the other is Bettergro orchid. Anything with micro and macro nutrients works great for water culture. I always dilute the feed either by 1/2 or 1/4. But that’s just me and what I do. You can add diluted feed with every watering or just once a month and top off with water in between. I always like to keep the water clean, so I flush out the vessels around once a month or so, just to keep the water clean, remove any algae and flush out any salts that remain from the fertilizers. Some plants don’t even need much food. I’ve gone many months without adding nutrients, but I don’ recommend that. 😃. Hopefully this helps a little. Thanks so much for watching! 😃😃😃😃😃🪴

    I love it. I would love to know the rate in PPMs that you typically feed at! Especially these grown strictly in water. I plan on growing a bunch more in water just because it's fun, also, I have failed with every Philodendron I've tried this past couple years. Something's gotta change. 🙂 I feed my plants at every watering now and recently I tend to really stick with whatever the package recommendation is regarding how much feed to add, yet! I still suspect most of my plants are underfed! Do you have a TDS meter? Can you let me know how much feed you're giving? Your collection is always thriving, even the Begonias which die on me in soil, in water, in leca, in pon.....you see my problem, lols. Thanks Paul!

Keeping the water clean and bright light have both made a difference. I agree - water culture is fun, plus you can go on vacation and not worry so much. Ur the best. Thanks for ur comment. 😃😃😃

      Ok the PPM at a new feed is very diluted, between 100-200 ppm. But until the reservoir is flushed, the ppm in the res can get up to around 500. I prefer to keep it low unless I see deficiencies or slow growth. But they seem to thrive under these conditions pretty well. 😃

I might start experimenting with different levels and labeling them and aiming at consistency, just watch them for 6 months or so, this coming spring and summer. It should be a fun test. Hey, love your video. It gave me the want to try it again. I propagated begonia rex in water before, and often they died after repotting into soil, in fact I'm not at all doing well with rex begonias since I moved to this flat 2 years ago. Philodendron, Scindapsus, Monstera and Pothos are super easy to propagate in water and as I have no issues growing them in soil, I keep them in soil, also the soil will weigh the plant down so it wont topple over from above the kitchen tops lol
    But now that I see this video, I'm going to keep my last Monstera in water just to see how it goes. How do deal with the huge mass of roots they can grow? regular pruning? specifically Monstera.
    Also what fertilizer do you use? I have lots of multipurpose liquid plant food. I'm not sure I understand the term "nutrient rich" in this specific context and where to obtain it.
    Thx again for posting. 😊😊👍👍

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před rokem

      Hey there. 🙂 You have some options if your roots are getting out of control. I've trimmed the roots to keep them in control, but you could also increase the size of the vase/container as it grows. Pruning might be the best option though. As far as nutrients, any hydroponic nutrient with a good Nitrogen level would work. I use orchid fertilizer for most of my plants these days, since it has micro as well as macro nutrients. Regular soil fertilizers can easily burn roots in water culture. Let me know how it goes - I'm excited to hear how things progress. 🙂

      @@paultheplantparent2702 Oh my friend... it'll be a while for me, and since I'm not a whizz with filming and posting... its going to be difficult to documenting lol
      This is a bit of an addiction for me, I already have well over 400 houseplants in a one bed room flat, I'm constantly propagating and giving plants away, and occasionally buying a few more. yesterday I was walking around with 2 new plants, finding a spot... after well over an hour I managed to re-arrange a few areas and squeezed the new arrivals in.
      If I start growing in water... its going to be the nightmare of my nightmare lol
      btw, I'm growing a Pothos marble queen of the corner of a little aquarium, I always trim the roots back to not allow them to grow into the soil, it is a bit like a mangrove to look at and in about 1 year it grew 3.5fett roughly. So trimming roots on vigorous plants does work.
      It's no different than trimming the roots of bonsai and putting them back into the same pot with fresh soil around... if you get my comparison.
