  • Maranta love water culture. There, I said it. Beautiful leaves and fast growth once established, I’m never going back to soil growing for these beauties! The leaf quality is amazing!

    I’m glad I’m not the only one who chops and props plants as soon as I get them! I grow everything in semi hydro. Everything. It’s great fun to try different - and supposedly difficult plants in semi hydro - and no fungus gnats👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    All tap water isn't the same. Mine is harsh, so I use distilled water. I have the rabbit foot and the red line prayer plants, which grow very well. The lemon lime is the tricky one. Can't figure it out. I've propagated each of them and they do very well. Might just keep the lemon lime in water vs soil since I can't figure it out yet.

      I’ve heard that before with the lemon lime. It’s almost like each plant is an individual and they can throw a fit at any time. 😂🌱

    Thank you for sharing Paul!! I've had the same burnt tip issues from using tap water not realizing it!! But I've been doing the same leaving tap water out for 24hrs for some time for other houseplants such as Spider plants and Peace lillies!! I will use dechlorinated water for my Marantas from now on, I put a cutting in water so hoping for the best!! May I ask what fertilizer you use?❤️🙏🏼

      Believe it or not I’m using an orchid fertilizer. It has higher nitrogen than Maxigro. I’m also working on an experiment to treat tap water. I’ll probably put out a video on it soon, once I have enough data/results to share. 😃😃😃

    @ Paul The Plant Parent: Enlightening video Sir. Have you ever tried to grow the prayer plant in a drip hydroponic setup? Does it have to be submersed or if you keep an irrigator on the roots do you think it would allow it to thrive? May I ask where you like purchase your prayer plants?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před rokem +1

      Hello. I’ve never used a drip hydro system but it would probably work great. I keep the roots submersed in the water and they throw out new leaves every week. I can’t believe how easy they are in water. Thank you so much for watching. 😃😃😃🌱

    Hey there! very informative video. I recently got a cutting of a Prayer Plant. I have it in water (the mother plant was in soil) the plant seems to be doing fine & growing beautifully but I am noticing this almost slime like floating residue coming from the roots. This is the second time in probably a month that I’ve had to rinse the roots off and put new water in…what is that substance, is it normal?

      Hello there. Hmmmm. I don’t think I’ve seen that in any of mine. Is it greenish? Wondering if it’s algae or something like that??? Not sure I e come across that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    So, dumb question. How do you tak a cutting from calatheas? They grow sideways from the roots right? Do you dig out a portion?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před rokem +1

      Not dumb at all. Most Calathea can be divided, kind of like peace lilies, they sprout pups off the sides of the mother plants. Others like Ctenanthe sprout pups but also branches with nodes that can be propagated, similarly to Maranta. Fascinating family of plants. 😃👍🏼

    May I ask what nutrient solution you're using and ratio and how frequently you're changing water?
    Just about to buy a maranta fascinator and going to use this soil free method in a few hanging bowls to create a cascade effect as they mature

    0:08 Good morning Paul and thank you for your great videos. When propagating in water do you add the nutrient immediately? Also how often do you change out the water and again add nutrient immediately - or give the plant a rest in just water? Thank you in advance.

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před rokem +1

      Hi Colleen. Thank you so much!!! When I’m propagating I use just water - no nutrients. I know some ppl that add nutrients at the start but they don’t seem to need that. The water changes depend on the cutting. If the water stays clean, I may not swap out the water for a week. If it starts to look cloudy or dirty in any way, I’ll swap it out every day or every two days. When transferring soil roots to water culture I tend to swap out the water more often. That transition could take a little longer.

      @@colleenlubomirski3969 hello 😃. Never had mosquito issues. But there’s a helpful product called mosquito bits. It’s a bacteria that only infects flies. So you can mix a little in the water. Never had to here though.

      I change my water weekly and I never add any nutrients when I start but I have worm compost tea and after I start to see roots I will add a bit of that to the water. You can use it every time you water your plants. Because it's worm compost you won't risk burning your plants from fertilizer

    You have them in tap water!! You made my day, Paul. I just returned a beautiful pink striped calathea because we are in a new town and searched every store for distilled water and couldn't obtain any. I'm going to try this for sure. We have a water softener in this new house, do you know anything about softened water on houseplants?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před rokem

      Hello there. I don’t know about softened water but if you’re concerned, just leave the water out for a day to remove chlorine, etc. I’m working on another experiment that might make it even easier for you. Stay tuned. 😃😃😃. Yay!!!! Tysm for watching!!!

      @@paultheplantparent2702 yes I will, I love learning new techniques to try on my plants, and these prayer plants are so sensitive, but maybe that is more because they are 'drowning' in soil with inadequate air to the roots, verses the hardness of the water.....I was always under the impression they don't like too much water, or too little, or too hard, or chlorine, or any other typical tap water additives....very interested to see your next expirament! 🙂

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před rokem

      Hello. Oh no. Did you clean all the soil off? That can make a huge difference. If you’re not sure what to do, you can put it back in soil and take cuttings to root in water. That may be easier for you if the plant is compromised. I e only had issues if the plant was going downhill right before I transitioned.

    Is it from the leaves?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před 5 měsíci

      You would need a node to get roots. They look like little swollen “elbows” that the leaves are attached to.

    • @paultheplantparent2702

      It depends on the actual cutting. Some show roots starting after a week….others can take a few weeks. Not sure what determines that but it varies. 😃🤷🏻‍♂️🌱
