I slowly transfered my smaller plants: Peace lilly, Red Anthurium, Red Aglaenoma, Wandering Jew, Pothos, Chinese Evergreen, and a Pilea Pepermoides baby to water, and some in sphagnum moss and I love both methods!! They look prettier to me in both mediums but more so in water!! I have them all under grow lights, I change the water at least once every other week, I water the moss plants when the moss starts to dry but I love your "hydrogen peroxide tip" and will be incorporating this!! And I been doing the tap water left out for 24-48hrs method for years and my plants have done well!! It's SO much more economical not having to buy potting soil, perlite etc!!❤️🥰🙏

I love to grow plants in water. I put some schefflera stalks in two little apothecary bottles and sat them on the back of my stove to propagate them, with the intention of transfer to soil two years later they're still going strong in the bottles! I have cuttings of heart leaf philodendron, and various other plants in bottles everywhere. They are easy to maintain and move around ad I please. They look beautiful tucked i to baskets hanging on the wall, on window sills, etc....and no fungus gnats, which is the biggest plus for me!

I have several snake plants as well but all in soil but I will try a cutting and put it in water. I had a Chinese evergreen but I couldn’t keep it alive once I put it in soil. I will know next time . Monsterra is VERY forgiving with what the water level is, i had originally put my cuttings in a relatively large buvket and it would often slide completely into it but its doing just fine and the roots are flourishing
I used to just change out the water frequently, but lately I've been mixing water and dish soap and then spraying all the plants with the mixture. Kills most of the bugs!
Have you experimented with Maidenhair fern? I did but failed, that said, I got a pot of half dead maidenhair fern from Lowes at deeply discounted price. Cleaned the roots of soil, and submerged the 3/2 of the roots in water, 1/3 above water. The plant died a slow death .... Love to have your take on this plant, or other ferns.

so you change the water every now and then?? i have a kind of lucky bamboo growing in water and it's overall very happy. i just add water to it. I'm not crazy that the container , water is not all clean/clear. For some reason i thought it wouldn't be good to clear it all out and put it back in new water....your thoughts?? thank you. :->
Putting fresh water every now and then and clearing out old water is beneficial for the plant. But if your plant is happy the way it is and it works for you then I’m sure what you’re doing is fine 😊

Hi Erica, this is really interesting stuff! There are lots of ideas here for people with aquariums too.... The Alocasia at the end ; would the stem and leaves grow / survive being fully submerged / the run to the surface, or would you always need to keep the bulb right at the surface? Do they have like a submerged form that would survive if you planted a bulb with no stems/roots? Sorry, lots of random questions for you there! Thanks!
I have a micans about 1 metre long, i transferred it to water about a week ago, but the leaves began yellowing and curling inwards, i'm really worried about what to do. I am not sure if its because of the lack of nutrients as it is a full long plant? I was thinking of cutting off the old root system and allowing it to regrow in water? What do you think?

Thank you!😊 if you cut the roots the plant will stop growing for awhile until it can form water roots but it’s not going to suffer from lack of water. Soil roots are not used to absorbing water also in an all water environment so they’re not useful to the plant either when transitioning from soil to water 😊 hope that helps!

I’ve been growing my golden pothos in water and the roots are black/ brown because of algae, do you know how to remove them? Other than to gently clean the roots manually
Manually is probably the best. 😊 black or brown mushy roots could be root rot as well coz algae is usually green. You can try adding hydrogen peroxide to the water and see if it helps if it’s root rot that you’re facing. 😊

I think if it has no rot, you can just gently pull all the soil off then gently rinse the soil off so it's nice clean.
