  • Benchmarking a Dell XPS 15 9560 i7 7700HQ GTX 1050 in games in 2021
    Looking at the hard times other CZcamsrs are having trying to get viewers interested in PC videos during the 2021 parts shortage, I decided to hold off of new builds for a while and make a video about my Dell XPS 9560 laptop. I dunno, seemed like a good idea at the time. In this video, I test out my Dell XPS 15 9560, a decidedly non-gaming 4 year old laptop with a quad core laptop i7 and GTX 1050, in a few modern games

    My first proper laptop was the XPS 9560. It served me very well in engineering school. It came in handy, being capable when doing CAD/CAE in my Bachelor thesis, as well as a little bit of gaming and photo editing along the way. However, I felt its age starting to show a little bit in 2021. It got really hot, the battery capacity sunk dramatically, and it started to crash more and more often. But since it was in still more than capable enough for what I really needed, and a new laptop didn't seem to be a justified upgrade at all, I instead went for a prebuilt desktop on sale. (It only had a 1660 super, but the price was only $150 more than the GPU price alone was in my country.)
    The idea was that the upgrade to a desktop will eek out the last few years in the XPS as a secondary machine for away from home tasks, while the primary machine does all the heavy lifting at home.
    When it's a secondary machine, there's no reason to upgrade it really until it dies. Which might take many more years, especially if I replace the battery. And when that day comes, a mid range laptop with a 15/28W CPU and a much more "reasonable price" will outperform it generously. Actually, already today an i5-1135G7 will beat out the i7-7700HQ across the board. But in another 2-3 CPU generations, we're talking some proper difference.

      @julienmueller Před 2 lety

      With a little re-paste of the CPU and GPU with high quality thermal paste and a purchase of a non-original battery, your laptop can still be kicking for a couple more years in best condition. Should cost about 60 USD for both together. I own the 9360 and both upgrades have restored it to almost new behaviour. It's a beast with an eGPU and I will keep it until the day it dies. (and even then might just buy a second hand one of the same type for like 300 USD)

  • @OwlsUniqueSounds
    @OwlsUniqueSounds Před 3 lety +6

    Thanks for this, I found this laptop on marketplace for a pretty good price. I cant seem to find any other recent videos of how this exact laptop holds up this year, so finding this video really helped. the sole reason I was looking for one of these is for video editing and photoshopping on the go and of course to do my school work since everything is online now. I will be switching from a crappy school laptop that's admin locked since its not mine, so I'm sure it will be worth it.
    also, you are doing great with the quality of your videos, The edits are very good, the only thing id suggest is to fade the music out a bit while you're talking, other than that keep up what you're doing now.

      It's a great laptop for visual work. I haven't watched the video lately, but I don't think I say enough just how good the screen is, it really is superb contrast and colour. If you end up with the version with the glossy display, you might want to invest in a matte screen protector.

    I'm still using my 9560 in 2023. Pretty solid machine. I got mine in 2020 for $500. I have the 7300hq. Might be better than the more demanding i7 chip of the same generation considering the throttling issues.
    I wouldn't game on this. I've played games a couple times and it's decent but not great. Desktop is much better and cheaper for that purpose.
    I am an engineering student so battery life is important. I opted for the 1080p panel and upgraded the ~47whr battery to the 97whr one and I can now get 9 hours on battery pretty easily.
    Laptop came with a 1TB HDD and a 32GB nvme disk. I had to remove the HDD to fit the larger battery. Swapped in a 2TB nvme disk which I can always swap to another machine when I get a new machine. Laptop came with 1x16gb DDR4 which has been sufficient but I can get it up to 32gb if I wanted to.
    It can be charged over USB C which is pretty cool. I have a wall charger and a USB C charger that I use.
    Build quality has a few issues. The laptop frame is susceptible to warping. Trackpad clicking often requires a lot of force (no my batt is not expanding).
    Dual boot configuration with Linux is pretty good. I haven't had any issues with driver support.

      No don't. It throttles like crazy and to keep it stable u'll have to disable intel turbo boost, which capped ur cpu clock at 2.8Ghz and not to mention it doesn't have mux switch + that shit ass Intel HD630 graphic that is strapped to the display made horrible lag in the ui experience. Photoshop, premiere, AI, is a nightmare.

      My particular laptop has a tendency to power throttle from time to time, though it hasn’t done so in a while. It is apparently a known issue with XPS 15s and the only fix I found was disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. If your primary use is Valorant, it will normally do the job pretty well.

      I used to undervolt, but XTU now seems to offer zero control of anything. All the sliders are greyed out. I read somewhere that Dell had locked them down with a BIOS update, which I suppose might be reversible?
