    I was considering buying a Dell XPS 15 but luckily enough I didnt and went for a Lenovo Yoga 720 instead, hopefully this comment doesnt go unnoticed and anyone question what to currently but can read it, the Lenovo Yoga 720 came with a 7700HQ, a gtx 1050 and a 4k display color accurate gorilla glass almost besseless with good camera placing, a 1tb hdd PLUS 512 ssd, a 80 battery and windows pen support, more ports than the xps 15 and all that with a modern fully convertible design for just 1470$, the model is just out but i expect it to scale pretty fast on the rankings and be put together if not on top of this year's xps 15

    • @mint-98
      @mint-98 Před 7 lety +11

      I can argue that it shouldn't be put on top, but spec wise it sounds like a great alternative. Things to consider: smaller battery than 97 Whr option of the dell, 2gb less video RAM, and if you opt for the 1080p model (better battery life) you can't get 16gb of ram. The Lenovo is less pricey though, but also seems less available internationally. (they don't sell it here in the netherlands yet, for instance) The Dell's webcam is laughable (put a piece of tape on it, and don't use it ever again laughable.)
      it's a personal choice if you opt for the dell or the lenovo, but good on you for pointing out the alternative!

      No, that was just an honest question - I looked at a number of systems before I got my XPS and a lot of them were just dual cores, like the 7500. I didn't realise Lenovo had a Yoga with the full on i7. That's why I asked.

    If I remember right, the thunderbolt 3 port only has 2 PCIE lanes, so there will be a larger performance penalty for eGPU's compared to other laptops with 4 PCIE lanes backing the port.
    I also kinda prefer numpad less keyboards so they are centred in the body and not forcing you to lean left.

      kind of... but you have to consider a) the 4K Panel eats power like nothing and b) the Kaby Lake Processors are quite a bit more energy efficient than your Skylake one. Your Laptop needs avg 20W in idle, the new verion only half of that, so it's no wonder that you only get 4 hours even with a bigger batery

    I returned my xps 15 ( same config as Linus's) due to following reasons:
    1: poor quality control. The bottom of this laptop isn't even flat, 1 corner of the bottom can't even stand straight.
    2: The screen looks amazing but the response time is terrible. If you likes playing csgo or other quick fps game, it will hurt your eyes.
    3: Killer 1535 is a pain in the ass. It keeps dropping off line if you are downloading files at a very high speed. You have to reconnect the internet from time to time.
    4: It can't show the true power of 7700hq and 1050 due to thermal management. The cpu won't get hot but that is because the frequency has dropped. 1050 should be powerful enough to play csgo but due to cpu problem and low screen response time, you won't feel comfortable when you use xps15 to play games.
    So overall this laptop is perfect for some professionals and students ( maybe a little bit expensive ), it has great design and the new fingerprint scanner is sweet, but if you like playing games this one isn't a good choice.

      @ignasanchezl Před 7 lety +2

      You are using very outdated parts.
      You can get much better performance on a Pentium G4560 with a GTX 1050.
      Plus you don't need a CPU cooler since one comes boxed.
      Best price and reliability for power supplies is EVGA, my to go brand.
      For RAM, 8 gb is great (has to be DDR4 for this system).
      For a motherboard, the cheapest you can find that is compatible with KabyLake CPUs is OK, unless you want some extra features.
      Go with a 7200 RPM hard drive, it will offer much faster loading times and better operating system response. WD blue or Seagate Barracudas are great.
      Just go to PCpartpicker and the site will help you with the parts compatibility.

The only time you really should go for brand new, is when you want to have the newest stuff which can't be found on the second hand market yet.

    Hey, Linus, 1 question. Does this include a built in rectifier, i.e. can you run this directly off the wall by removing the battery? This used to be possible on older models, but I haven't seen it as of late. It's a necessity for a desktop replacement that's only going to be lugged around occasionally for presentations et al, because of the battery is needed to run, then it means all your power comes through the battery, resulting in the last cell using up its charge-discharge cycles very quickly, and before you know it you only have 70% of the battery capacity that you used to have a few months ago.

    Honest owners opinion: do not buy the xps 15. I do not know why so many reviewers give such positive reviews to this laptop. It's full of problems and not at all worth the amount of money that it costs. What I think it boils down to is poor quality control on these laptops. Sure they look good with their semi aluminum bodies but they come with loads of issues. Lemme just list the ones that mine has: half the touchscreen stops working randomly and forces a restart. Creeky and crackly opening of the lid, worst and buggiest BIOS that I've ever seen, the resolution is fine but with scaling so many programs and software don't support it and are therefore illegible. Trackpad is not flush with the surface of the laptop it's crooked, gesture controls and palm rejection are extremely buggy and therefore more of a pain than helpful. However the battery is increadibly long I'll say that.
    All in all if you really want to spend the money on that kind of laptop just get a mac and boot it with windows oem. Or just buy a different laptop.

      Dell do need to up their quality control, but the reality is that most people who buy these laptops wont face these problems. And due to there being no real alternatives, the XPS 15 is still the best all round laptop around.

    Excellent Video. Always enjoyable with lots of fun & humor. I have XPS15 2012 model. i7 2670QM + 15.6" screen + 8GB RAM + Nvidia Geforce 540M +1TB + JBL speakers + Bluetooth 3.0 +HDMI port + 3 USB ports + DVD RW + Backlit keyboard + 9 cell battery + Window 10 creators update (updated recently) - working gr8. (not a touch screen laptop)
    I am due for an upgrade but I won't choose Dell this time because there are better laptops for the price he mentioned & may be a little more cost & you get a beast.
    Here is what I am after. i7 7820hk + 64GB RAM + SSD ( any size ) + HD (any size) + anti-glare + Nvidia GTX 1080 + backlight keyboard + 17" screen + VR ready + G-sync + 5 USB ports + HDMI ports + DVD RW (do we need this any more? ) + Good speakers + Good webcam + decent battery life ( I know it might be too much to ask )
    All that & more I can get it from MSI or ASUS ROG machines. It will cost 3500$. Even if it costs a fortune still it is worth instead of paying 1000$ or 2000$ on this dell machine which is neither here nor there. Always go for the kill. Choose the best processor + high amount of RAM and excellent graphics card. Storage - you can always add external or use cloud but these are most important parts.
    If you are like me who wants a mean beast then don't choose this Dell laptop. It looks gr8, has good screen, RAM is on lower side. touch is nice option but overall if you see price to performance & features what they offer is not on par. There are better laptops out there. MSI & ASUS ROG. They are changing the way we think about laptops.
