    I really liked this idea! And I always thought the same about the original Disturbing Movies Iceberg, the bottom couple tiers are just snuff “films”, some of which are up in the air about the existence of them anyway, and that’s not really the same as a disturbing horror movie.

  • @WishAtElevenEleven
    @WishAtElevenEleven Před 6 měsíci +20

    This made me realize that a lot of horror movies I’ve enjoyed are not disturbing, or maybe not even horror.
    The only movie I’ve seen below the iceberg is hereditary, and I was able to handle that one because it only had one really disturbing moment. I found hostel far more disturbing than that because rather than one (truly) shocking moment, it was a whole movie of depraved people.

    For me Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer takes the cake on leaving an impact. Something about it just left a dour filter over me for a few days. Some others I'd add to an iceberg are Bone Tomahawk, The Devil's Rejects, I Spit on Your Grave.

    I just watched a movie called The Monitor for the first time and I had the exact reaction as yours with Speak No Evil...just soooo many emotions- mostly anger, frustration, exasperation...it felt like a LOT. The movie itself isnt gory or disturbing it just evoked a lot of feelings in me. I swear, I felt like I needed a nap afterwards it was so draining hahaha!!

    honestly, i thought you were gonna put talk to me somewhere. for me, it was definitely one of the most disturbing films i have ever seen. like you said, not necessarily for the gore, but just the whole atmosphere, the absolute dread... i was physically upset, i spent the whole movie just desperately wanting to get up and leave. i havent processed it yet, i was so traumatised that my brain just... dissociated, i feel like i dont even remeber the film. dont know when ill feel like rewatching it

    I’m so glad that Climax made the second to last tier. I watched that film a few years ago, and I’ve never felt such intense anxiety while watching a movie. I had a panic attack shortly after it was over because of the tension that kept building and would not leave. I had a similar experience while watching Beau is Afraid, but that one just left me in a dissociative state for a few days after viewing

    It's kinda funny that this mirrors the 'classic' iceberg - the more real it is, the deeper down it is. In the case of the classic there's actually literal 'real' stuff, whereas this of course is just mimicking reality. Just an interesting parallel and it makes sense to me.

    Thank you for creating an iceberg with actual horror movies. I would never watch anything below tier 3 from the original "horror" iceberg, not in my life. I also like how you pointed out that everyone finds different things disturbing and has different limits. Personally, I can't watch gory/body-horror movies or many movies depicting torture, I don't like them. So Saw or Hostel would be way down there. Strangely enough, though, I'd swap Funny Games and Hereditary. Funny Games just made me emphasize with the family members much more, thus ended up making me feel much more disturbed. The other movie I'd add to the lower tiers would be The Ring and Salo. That one scene in Salo almost made me throw up, not going into detail. And those last ten minutes were unwatchable for me, I literally had to turn away from the screen. However, interestingly enough I could also see the artistic aim and message behind Salo and I did read behind-the-scenes info about how much fun the actors had while filming. So that made Salo very disturbing and a hard watch but... a movie worthy of being called one.
