In today's video we take a look at the Anycubic Kobra. This printer was released in the past couple of months and is a brand new machine following the Vyper we covered from Anycubic last year. It has a slightly smaller build volume but comes with a direct drive extruder and sensorless homing. We will cover the printer's specs, what setup was like, how it prints, I and I will give you my conclusion on this printer based on my experience so far.

The Kobra is quite good and works well out of the box. You can also disable the sound in the menu.
One of the gotchas I've found with some Trinamic drivers - and some versions of Marlin - is that too-fast moves can cause the Trinamic stepper drivers to shut down and just stop moving, without the firmware catching the problem. This usually happens during homing, since this invokes fast moves. Most recently we saw this issue on a Biqu B1 SE after using improper slicer settings. The remedy is to ensure that the max speeds - and max accelerations - are well tuned, and avoid letting the slicer change those settings. We'll try to do better catching "standstill" errors in the future and go to the "kill" screen in that case.

I dig it. The “toyish” quality seems fitting. Reminds of me of the old GI Joe toys. So I guess Kobra would be fitting. Also this seems like a budget option to the S1 which is a win in my book.

Great video, I love my Kobra so far, did have some trouble feeding in the filament was getting stuck just passed the metal gear. Question, I am wanting to get a larger printer, any suggestions? Stay with Anycubic like Viper or Max or another brand?
Now that you have experience, shop for a "unrepair" Anycubic Mega X. These are on Ebay for around $119, delivered. I have 2, they're great. Buy the Squaretrade warranty for $10 and if anything at all is wrong with it, Squaretrade will refund your purchase price for the printer, which will fund buying anything defective as brand new for it. I've bought a total of 4 printers this way, 3 worked perfectly and had never even been attempted to be put together. That last one, an Aquila, was a mess with build plate, mainboard, cable to LCD missing, after full refund those parts cost the same as the original printer cost, so was out nothing over the original cost, and had new parts in it...
These are all customer returns from customers like Amazon wannabes who give up most often just seeing how complicated it will be, or mommy or daddy learns that the hotend will go to 400 degrees and fry juniors fingers, so back in the box it goes and back to Amazon, where the original sellers just dump these at crazy cheap prices on Ebay to get rid of them.

I just bought the printer and really haven’t gone to far with printer due to working at the hospital. I do have it completely set up though and leveled. I just need to print my first piece to get started.
so i can see this video is a bit older now, but i think this might be a good addition to my original i3 mega, which ive had since late 2018.
also, i love the little jingle its plays on startup :)
we all want one, but just remember, if you get this or any other printer from anycubic, no parts and no support so your new shiny printer will be useless very soon
Hi ; first ; thank you for the review. I won't be buying this model if I buy a Anycubic but that's only because of personal preference. In all it looks like a good budget machine . I would like to bring that point up first. It's a budget minded machine and the fact it has auto leveling is great. It is however a budget machine so you can't expect too much and I really don't think the look of the machine makes any difference as long as it does its intended job well !
The two issues I have with it are it doesn't have dual z axis lead screws with motors and its all well and good to say it can be upgraded to that but what does that ad to the cost and what other 3D printers are out there that do have them and what's the price difference. For me ; if your going to do tall big builds then I think it's a must to have dual z axis lead screws , otherwise you will start to get some discrepancies towards the top of your tall build cause the lack of stability which comes with single lead screws. You may or may not have big issues but why risk it. It's hard enough sometimes to do a good print on a big project without having unwanted movement in the z axis with tall builds! I will be looking up the specs of this one and the Kobra Max which has a Hugh build size but they take it into consideration with Dual Z Axis lead screws with motors on both and support rods , one for each side. All in all, it's what you want to use it for and what meets your needs. I think however it's poor of a big company not to make all their bigger build machines with dual z axis lead screws. Even if only one was motor driven and the other acted as guide. Its important that all z lead screws be supported at the top as well as I see so many budget ones that have no support at the top of the z end screw and the movement they have is shocking !

Anycubic doesn’t need to release an upgrade for a full metal heat break. There’s plenty out there that works. I swapped mine out and put a 70w heater cartridge in my Kobra. Use a Vyper v5 heat break or any other v5 with a v6 nozzle and you’ll be full metal. You’re welcome 😉

I have Flashforge creator pro's, a Makerbot Replicator 2 and a could of Flashforge dreamers. I bought this one too, it was very easy to put together, I use Simplify3d as my slicer, I was a little disappointed I had to upgrade to V5 because there is no profile for V4, but it's a solid printer for the price.
Do you know of any mods for the Kobra Max? I didn't see any videos from you on it. Is there a removable bed mod for it?
Is there any way to get a more "up to date" firmware for this printer or a more "customizable" one like jyers did for the E3V2?
Any chance you can show us how you used Pursa Slicer with the Kobra? I would like to give it a shot.

The jingle sound as far as I am concerned s a non-issue. I think the unit looks fine, and the look of the unit truly holds no bearing on the performance. I think this unit is a perfect tool for the first time 3D printer owner.

I have bought this printer 6 weeks ago and have been using it since. It is my first 3D printer and I am so damn amazed. As a software engineer and hardware enthusiast my demands are rather high, and I can say I am not disappointed. From what I have seen in all those dozens of hours of printer tests and comparisons, this printer performs just as good as the way more expensive Prusa Mini Plus. However, the Anycubic Kobra firmware is rather basic, not correctly handling manual g-codes like m0 if you want user input during printing. But, if you are not someone like me who directly started writing manual g-code you will get the by far best value printer for this price range (260€ right now in many shops). All my prints are all but perfect in quality, I get the speed up until the point of belts jumping without any layer-shifts prior to that. It's an amazing machine and so damn under-valued by many enthusiasts. It kind of reminds me on my HTC Desire HD smartphone which only got famous years after release. In short: There is no better 3D printer to start with than this one. The device just works out of the box - flawlessly.

Cobra or Viper? which one is better, i hear some good things in this review about the cobra, but also some small things that where better on the viper. I am looking at buying my First 3dprinter mainly for Boardgame inlays (small boxes and holders).

Do you have the same problem as me? The Kobra is really loud although it’s not heating up. And the most curios thing is that when I use the fill in function I can’t stop it, as it says in the instructions.

I’m basically down to this or the ender 3 v2 but I can’t decide, what should I do? How do they compare in terms of print quality and part sourcing?
v2 is older but will have more info, 3rd party mods, and printable upgrades. Kobra has auto bed leveling, powder coated PEI, and direct drive. Specs if we are going stock, I heavily favor the Kobra. Both can print well, Kobra will do better for TPU. Part sourcing v2 will be easier, but I have heard Anycubic has pretty solid after sales support if you did need a part.
I was in the same boat a few months back. The choice was between the Ender 3V2 or the Vyper. I went with the ender only cause of all of the support and mods available. I went into this hobby to learn and tinker so that’s why it won out. Today it’s now been a few weeks since I’ve printed cause I got too crazy with mods and I’m currently in a tuning mode to get things going again. I’m considering the Kobra or the Vyper again as a back up printer. Just straight out the box good to go. To be honest I did three mods on my ender straight out of the box. Cr Touch, Metal Extruder, and stiffer bed springs. Printing quality prints in only PLA this was more than enough and actually miss it. Basically if you want to tinker with tons of support go with the ender. If you want go with something pretty good straight out of the box, the Vyper or the Kobra seem like a perfect option.
@@axelmg89 Thanks! I’m just concerned with the Kobra’a newness as if I need a replacement part or advice I don’t know where to look. Also there could be long term issues not discovered yet. I would prefer an all around good printer out of the box however
@@somethingfunny5629 no problem! And yeah ultimately that’s what my decision came down to. Any where you look there endless support and solutions for the Ender 3’s. I didn’t want to pick up the Vyper and not have any of that. Knowing what I know now I wouldn’t have an issue picking up the Vyper or Kobra. Most issues with FDM printers are the same with similar solutions. Also just keeping it real, have a rational understanding of your print quality. Like I said I kept modding my Ender to “improve” my prints, and they were actually really good prior to my major mods. So much so that my next option is to remove some of the mods I’ve done.
Skip the Ender. I’ve had it for one year and it’s been a huge pain to operate reliably. I’ve made a few amazing prints along the way, but you’ll spend most of your time in maintenance. Just isn’t worth the headache anymore. The z-axis height changes after every print, requiring a bed levelling for each print. That’s just one example.
Man, printers nowadays are getting so good and so cheap. Really regret getting the ender 3 V2 so early, should've just waited. I haven't even used it that much as well.

Just print and don't worry about it. You're never gonna be happy if you listen to all the ender 3 hate. The Ender 3 v2 is perfectly capable machine.

@@kenopyowo yh, it just sucks tho because creality have terrible customer service and this was my first printer so I had no idea about these issues. Might just order a bl touch and move on to more advanced prints.
Did Anycubic ever release a software update that allows you to use the Prusa Slicer filament change/pause at height? If you do this with the Vyper, it pauses properly, but there's no way to resume.
Sadly to this day even the latest firmware is buggy and completely ignore and user-input commands like "M0". It is really stupid. HOWEVER, Klipper is so awesome, that anyone should use it as a replacement firmware anyway.

Kobra with direct drive but 1 Z screw!! Or vyper with 2 Z screw but the auto leveling sistem breaking more often and bowden ??? Why can't the kobra have 2 Z screw and be the same price as the vyper:(
A really decent 3d printer

I bought the anycubic kobra about a month ago and still haven't been able to make one print. I follow the setup instructions, like preheating and leveling and even if I try to print the owl it comes with , it totally fails. It just starts printing in a horizontal line. I downloaded the suggested parameters that come with the SD card but I can't fix it and don't know how. Please help me!!! 🙏🏼
4:25 - I sure don't like how the print head is bowing inward before the limit is triggered. It suggests the nozzle is touching the bed early, and the sensor needs to be adjusted downward.
I’ve always have dual z lead screw printers. Being that this is a single lead screw, does it ever askew on x axis?
I'm having two issues with mine. My bed seems to be moving. An awful lot has about a quarter inch of up and down movement side to side. And I had to replace my nozzle and I don't know how to get it to stop leaking from around the threats. That's definitely user error. I get a buildup that will inevitably drop into my Print then harden and then when the nozzle comes back around to it, it hits it so hard that the print comes loose.
I just got mine and I’m having a lot of trouble with the leveling and singing every time before I start a print it freezes how do I fix these please help
i've recently bought this and have a little concern...
when I manually move the print plate while the printer is off I can feel a cupple of "bumps" or small points where it doesn't slide that well.
this sometimes cause the homing process to stop half way, when it encounters one of this points.
i looked if any screws were in the way, I looked if the wheels had something wrong, I've tried adding some lube to the wheels but nothing.
does anyone know what could cause this problem and how to solve it?
ps, If i put the print plate all the way in the back then the homing works and the print turns out pretty good.(it doesn't affect the y axes that much while printing)
Bed wheels too tight in that case. They should turn under moderate finger pressure individually, all equally. not overly tight, not spinning freely.
Would you recommend the Kobra over the Sovol SV06?
This is currently on sale for the same price as the ender 3 because of prime day, but my parents won’t let me get it still. Hopefully next year

Kobra is definitely better out of the box, perfect if your just learning and only going to be printing pla, petg, tpu. Ender 3 has more aftermarket making it cheaper and easier to modify for higher temp printing in the future.

I bought this printer shortly after it came out and after having it for a few months I would like to share that I did end up having a lot of issues with the direct drive on this machine. All I ever printed was PLA and yet the extruder motor on my machine just started grinding and stopped working entirely after about 2 months. The rest of the machine seems to be fine, and I think I will look into replacing the entire direct drive hotend, but wanted to share this that the print head components might be a bit ... cheap (shocker I know)
could be a bum stepper motor fam. anycubic is known for steppers that have overheat themselves to death. if you reach out to their support, they'll most likely replace the part for free. they replace my i3 mega power supply
My Cobra Prints are failing, because of the poor adhesion on the printing plate. ? Any help. I cleand the plate but about the half of the testprint owl, its loosenend from the Plate . Bed Temp was 65 C
Prolly need to lower the offset for more squish tweak it while printing and feel the freshly laid down filament with your finger, should not move with gentle pulling at it moving finger over it diagonally. Also, clean the plate really well scrubbing it with dish soap and drying since factory can leave some oily coating that limits adhesion.
I really liked my Kobra but I messed it up working on a jam and sold it for parts. I bought the new Kobra Neo (for $129) and a Kobra 2 Pro. I actually like the Kobra and Kobra Neo better than the new Kobra 2 line. The old Kobra and the Kobra Neo are direct drive, no bowden tube, which the bowden tube on the new Kobra 2 series are a super pain to switch filaments and I don't like that. I don't want to print super fast like the Kobra 2 series which can print at like 500mm/s, the prints aren't as good and it sounds like a jet taking off when printing. What I want is something that prints well, is quiet, and has the fewest problems and the Kobra Neo fits that bill especially for $129. The Neo has had no problems so far and puts out pretty good prints. Not as good as my Prusa Mini, the tops have various artifacts in them, but relatively good for the money.

Direct Drive or Bowden? If intent on printing TPU, get the Kobra for its direct drive, if not, Vyper is fine. However, at $319 for a Vyper or $259 for a Kobra, I'd first look long and hard at a Sovol SV06: all axis are steel bearings on rods versus rubber rollers on the Kobra, it has a TRUE full metal hotend good up to 300c and is dual Z rod axis steppers. It has a planetary drive (three gears, more force) extruder so lots of benefits over the Anycubics. The rest is the same: auto leveling, pei bed. At $259, same as the Kobra, it's pretty much a clone of a Prusa MKS3+, which is $799 as a KIT... check out the reviews, it's the latest hot printer, other than maybe a Bambu P1P but that's $699...

i agree that the kobra looks a little funny (i think it's because of all of the complicated and jagged shapes in the plastic and the blue/red contrast) and i think that the vyper definitely looks better.

your wrong. lol. I got a creality endo-3 pro. leveling sucks and I'm done trying. this sounds like the ideal starter for me with self leveling and solid performance. thanks for the review
Anycubic has not yet released the source code of this printer breaching the GPL v3 open source license. This affects us as owners by limiting upgrades of our printers and having less 3rd party developers making new better parts. While they refuse the release of the source code i would not recommend this printer.

How do u know when to change nozzles
They will work for years unless you are using filaments that wear them out, which reading about the filament will tell you. PLA and PETG and TPU don't wear really much at all, so years on one. Most are upgrading to .6 nozzle, since the quality is almost indiscernible and you get faster prints. Unless trying to do stuff like miniatures I would def. use a .6.
My Kobra(s) have been nothing but problems!!! The first one had motherboard fan noise, loose bolts, wrong bolts, and extruder improperly installed creating an extruder malfunction. The second one has motherboard fan noise too, as well as software issues- locking up. Two strikes and you're out. I'm going to try another company/manufacturer. Side note: Support was responsive from a China time zone sort of way, meaning late evening/night/early morning for the US. Email only, no live chat or tel #. The reviewer above (IMO) got a pre-inspected, perfect, ready to go, fully functional printer to review. It's hit or miss buying "off the shelf". I missed... TWICE!

It is the BEST printer Anycubic has made so far. Do not let the names of the Kobra Plus and Kobra Max confuse you. THESE ARE NOTHING LIKE THE KOBRA. Anycubic would like you to believe that these are upgrades of the Kobra, but they are not.
