- The word Waffenträger may cause you to shudder remembering a tank capable of wiping out an entire flank in moments. And while the real German designs may not have reached that level of sheer absurdity, they make up some of the strangest designs of the second world war.

This really looks like a national geographic documentary... From the intro to the time you took doing research... Epic
Man have that in war thunder its damm good if u get a 5.7 or lower is soooo good over 200 mm of pin coneofark u should make a gameplay vid
I have heard 126mm pak for artillery, anti-tank, and tank destroyer but not a 150mm pak for any vehicle or machine that had a V-auto loader six to four rounds.
If the barrel of the diameter is bigger than 150 mm it is not called a pak for ground targets nor flak for sky targets it would be a like the sturmtiger or somthing else in german with a big gun on a tank design to destoyer heavy targets like bunke, navel ships, and light targets with a high explosive.
The Flak Bus actually exists, this is revolutionary.
Oh. No
Well yeah by name, also as we see it in game but not as seen in this video.
Wait ypu didnt know that ??? Its old news mate
pretty sure he meant the fact that there was a literal omnibus chassis with an 88cm
Andrew N. Damn a 880mm gun that’s big, I thought a 8,8cm was big enough

German tank and aircraft designers at the end of the war - 'keep drawing or we'll get sent to the Eastern front!"
No. You just get assigned to the Volksturm when the Soviets are 50 kms away. Here's your panzerfaust. Now go kill a tank.
@@kurt5490 Yah, the eastern front comes to you
I really got to wonder how much of their job was because they were given demands to draw something up or because they just liked drawing up cool tanks.
Having been an engineer, I've wondered how much of this drawing was just intended to persuade the Nazis not to send engineers and technicians into combat. By 1944, they were some of the highest-aptitude personnel left.
Albert Speer wasn't stupid he definitely knew what was going on

2:34 For the record, "Leichter Einheitswaffenträger" in this context would be better translated as "Light *Standardized* Weapons Carrier", as the "Einheits" in the name comes from the word "einheitlich", which means "standardized" or "uniformly".
I saw it written as both but went off the translation in my source book
@@ConeOfArc I understand, the translator probably mistook it for the word "Einheit", which means one unit of something.

It was so op that even wargaming had to remove it XD

A little note for the video: You translated "leichter/mittlerer Einheitswaffenträger" as "light/medium unit weapon carrier", but it can also mean "light/medium unified weapon carrier". Which probably was also the actual meaning as Germany at the time tried to simplify it's productions.
This is as good as a Mark Felton video. Keep up the great work.
I like Mark's vids but i really can't stand his audio. It's sounds so monotone and boring. At least Cone pus some effort into his speech
Great Video! I love this series

RheinMetal still make weapons system
The Abrams' gun system is made by them
@@DeosPraetorian That's sort of a myth. It was designed by them, but made in the U.S.
It's called license production the country or company pays for the ability to natively produce the weapon. So it's not a myth
Well, I've encountered people who have heard "the Abrams has a German gun" and thought, understandably, that the gun was manufactured in Germany and shipped over to the States. Because of that misconception, I think it's a distinction worth making.
and one of their subcontractors/sub-owned companies is MAN who produced the first Panthers and is still making military equipment as well.

I approve of your avatar.
I'm convinced most of these projects only existed to keep the designers from getting drafted into the army
considering how much the NS weapons developement, production orders etc depended on party internal friendships, smearing honey around the mouth of speer, hitler, göring and co.
it was just a mess of nepotism/favourism, privilege and incompetence.
thats why so many strange projects made it into production.
There's nothing wrong with these designs and that is basically what was made later on. I wonder how much bribe money was involved in getting the sherman into the war. Endless officers in the US military go into defense industries making puzzlingly high amounts of money no corruption there at all lol
@@LTPottenger well the road to m4 medium was a short and rocky one.
the us isolationism and separation from the military technological advancements spawned several strange children like the m2 medium tank, the m3 (lee/grant) medium tank.
they were strange at best and awefully designet.
the m4 was the logical progression and developed in a hurry from the inadequate and awkward m3 to have a proper medium tank for the moment, when the land forces would clash with the germans and japanese.
the m4 had a long list of teething problems, but matured quickly (under combat experience pressure) into a very fine tank.
there are other more strange adhoc projects in the us army at that time
@@zhufortheimpaler4041 The US Army didn't bother with designing tanks between the wars since it was cheaper to purchase tanks made by other countries for testing and teardowns to analyze their systems. Ike and Patton did that together at the Army's first armor training base where they tore tanks completely apart (including the engines and transmissions) to examine each part and determine the difficulty of repairs during re-assembly while smoking cigarettes and drinking beer. Both were advocates for J. Walter Christie who produced produced innovative prototypes for the US Army. Once the US Army Arsenal and Ordnance started designing tanks they came up with designs that were superior to what others were using in 1941 and for the rest of the war.
@@billwilson3609 no, not superior, often far from that.
but easy to maintain, mass produce and for a war on the other side of the planet, so high interchangability of spare parts and easy logistics.
09:46 Ah, the What-The-Fuck E-100 truly the pinnacle of (game) design and balance

Great work Sir thank you
I like how you were talking about failed tanks and the bob semple appeared because that thing was an absolute success
I think it would be cool if militaries (or a group of enthusiasts) actually made the tanks from some of the 20th century blueprints just so we could see the actual size and terror that these beasts could have brought to the battle field
Gonna have to find couple hundred million in disposable income... be right back

We can't do much bcz history is already written. So TRUE
7:00 That turret looks like the casemate of the SU-152 with a longer ML-20 howitzer. :D
Jesus imagine going against a panther with a m3 lee
I feel bad for the panther crew they are screwed
Fighting a panther in a grant/lee would be like dogfighting an A6M in a heavily armed Stepladder
I am curious. Do you think Ratte was an actual design? Or was it some joke that 2 engineers drew up while drunk, and pretended it was a real design after the war?
Well it got the funny moustache man excited. I guess it's very real
well, this one's (theopenboats.wordpress.com/2015/08/24/lesprit-de-maginot-1927/) designer wasn't even drunk, prob high on drug
i think the Ardelt-Krupp design was the best possible design, as it is essentially a self propelled flatbed with a standard 88 on a field mount. i think the Pz.IV Waffentrager could be a both cost and combat effective use for the remaining Pz.IV hulls after it was discontinued.

Great selection of music!
Matches perfectly with the visual Drama of the pictures!
To whose is that Music used in the video?
HAHAHA, first sentence referenced the WT auf E-100 fur 12,8. That beast was OP
Have you ever done a documentary about the Marder series of self propelled guns or the Wespe? I would love to see videos of those vehicles.
Just as a sid note : The British used a similar contraption in WW I, with great success.
A Mark IV tank, with an open platform between the running gears, that carried a howitzer and or ammunition, thru areas under fire. It was also possible and practiced, to fire the gun from the vehicle. Might be the Krauts picked something up there.
The best reference book for this subject is Special Panzer Variants by Walter J Spielberg's and Hilary L Doyle.
reminds me of some of the late war japanese tank projects, especially the 75mm Type 4 AA (which eventually became a semi-autoloaded AT with the designation type 5 75mm). The type 5 guns would've found their way into late war japanese tanks such as the chi-to & chi-ri had it's prototype been completed. I would like to see an overview of it at some point, as while the stationary AT gun would've featured an autoloaded, it's unknown whether it would've made it into the chi-ri, and it didn't make it into the chi-to for sure. Those late war tanks had the ability to become some of the only well designed japanese tanks.
8:00 arrr yes the good old Skorpion G that one tank that always somehow manages to blind shot me in Bushes
They played around with a couple designs, some with tracks some with wheels some longer some armoured etc
I think they just wanted to put an 8.8 flak on anything possible, such a versatile weapon, anti tank anti aircraft anti personnel can be used for seige warfare, very amazing gun they made
I think that with enough time they would find a way to make a magazine fed 8.8
Great video, love the in depth info of each vehicle. What music did you use from1:10- 3:27
I've been playing this tank in World of Tanks for 9 years. It's by far my favorite tank. You have to be very careful as it has no armor. But, the gun is a true sniper. 300 yard shots are nothing for it. I never knew it was a paper tank till now.
This is why I subscribed.
Leichter Einheitswaffenträger
has 2 meanings
as Einheit can mean either "unit" or "unity"
and the unity sense meaning one of "standard fit" basccally a base upon which you can mount different pieces of equipment, which all have a standardised way of connecting to the mount.
I don't remember when those were removed in WOT. But I watched a lot of videos of them, so OP.
I actually really enjoyed the video cone, here have some non consentual premarital headpats 😳
4:22 Notice the gun. There is little lines on it and those are kill marks. There is 18 lines which means 18 kills. That’s a lot considering this thing has no armor and can literally be taken out with a pistol.
Console version of WoT still has the WT auf E100 and it causes so much anxiety when you see it on the enemy team list
The Krupp team were Rockstar namers! First one, Krupp 1; second one, Krupp 2...
It brings a tear to my inspired eye...
some crazy ideas, some good but if the ruling lunatic didn't like ever the best weapon it didn't get used unless the generals risked his rath. one part of the defeat
Ngl, the Waffentractors were a smart idea
Light with full turret rotation and a big boom
Strictly speaking, Panzerjäger I, Marder II, Marder III and Bison would be the first Waffenträger. They are the same concept, except in name. Still your video is really great and I enjoyed the research you presented. Keep it up.
Given that that the german 75mm killed everything the allies fielded in significant numbers the only point of a wafenträger would deploy a number of field fortifications in a somewhat hot zone, the only advantage of a wafenträger vs a towed ATG that it can use the gun while heading for the deployment zone so its no wonder that none were produced in number. and given the base vehicles used for the most parts probably the Stug III could do most of its role much more cost efective (wich showed in its service record)
As a follow up to yet another amazing video, you should hop on WOT and play the last waffentrager event
What is extraordinary is that the Panzer truppen already had the basis for successful heavy self-propelled guns of the heavier calibre in the Dicker Max and the Sturer Emil. Had the Sturer Emil been redesigned with an armoured casemate around the gun it would have still been light enough to be mobile.
The jagdpanther was a perfect TD mounting the 88 Pak 43 L71, with the Panther and Pz Iv carrying the highly effective 75mm Pak 40.
The entire tiger serious was superfluous and a waste of resources.
Had the Germans standardised their tank force down to just two-three chassis and wheel configurations, then production would have soared, and maintenance far easier.
The Russians Basically used the T-34 and KV designs for all their later medium and heavy tank and assault gun designs, making it far easier to find spare parts.
The problem for the German designers was they just didn't know when to stop experimenting to find the perfect design and kept building bigger and heavier vehicles with ridiculous armour protection.
So many were lost to break downs and minor damage that it was a travesty to see a fresh King tiger with a broken track simply abandoned because of a track problem.
wirbblewind was always my fave German mounted gun
"Leichter Einheitswaffenträger" could be theoretically translated in two ways, the way you did and the way Einheits-something is used in German: It's the "light universal weapon carrier".
I was waiting for the mentioning of the RHM-Borsig with the lengthened Pz38 suspension (the one in WoT), but oh well
he did mention it but only very briefly (3:29), he just didn't link it to the RHM-Borsig in game. but these medium ones are the ones that were to get 5-6 road wheels, and that is the version in wot
Yes, I got that.
I'd have mentioned it tho, because it's at least as known as the WT E-100...
Prototypes like this were common in the Axis factories , check It out the Ansaldo 9 0 mounted on the chassis of the tank M15 .
Glad this series isn’t dead
I always like the railroad car that has twin 128mm autoloader cannons. I've seen photos but don't know the location where it is.
I wouldnt doubt at all that some German engineer wasn't trying to envisage a tracked vehicle that could mount a single or twin Barrell 128mm autoloader.
The railcar example was on a rotating platform like a turret

We need the Krupp WT SFH-18 in the game like as a tier 9 reward similar to what’s happening to the current British Cobra. With a 15cm gun firing SABOT rounds would be very scary and unique yet powerful or even have it as a tier 10 reward for campaign 🤷🏻♂️ but either way I Truly think something like that would be awesome to see in game sense WG already adds vehicles which never left blueprints and or wooden mock-ups any way. They could explore the idea of adding something in the realm of the unknown...again...
