I have had my Sportster 1999 883 for 25 years and 400,000 miles on the original engine. It's so much fun to ride. I put the bike on0% credit card until it was paid for. I commuted on it for 20 years. The first thing I did to the Sportster was to put crashbars on her. Just for safety just in case. I ride her daily as my transportation as I don't drive a car. People don't believe me but it's true. She's so much fun to ride. Ride safe.

What have you changed ? Needed or optional. I have about 11000 kms on mine now and I am interested in what you've encountered over the years.

I think before anybody changes anything on the iron 1200, they should ride it at least for 1000 miles as is while making note of what they need individually. It depends on what type of riding the owner will be doing. I own this bike, and I feel like the seat and suspension needs changing first, but that’s just my take. If money is tight, exhaust should be the least concern. Especially now since the price of everything continues to climb.

True definitely some preference behind it

Rideable seat and forward foot controls. After that, a windscreen. I live in Florida where we have lovebugs twice a year. They absolutely suck Alan from Havertown.

I have eleven thousand kms on my sportster now and i haven't changed a thing. I think everyone should go past ten thousand kms befor deciding on changing items that just might need breaking in. My seat and suspension are fine. Either its worked in or ive gotten used to the sportster ride. Ive done city and many five hundred plus kms day trips.

    I bought 19 iron 1200 w saddlemen stepup already on it......pos
It has a swingarm bag, don't know brand, can't carry much
    It also came with sissybar
The look is good, the useability low......seat horrible, I got the hd sundowner solo......far better ride
I haven't installed yet but I got kuryakyn luggage rack for solo Sportster.....going to remove sissybar......and a purty kemi moto bag to sit on rack
I don't know if stock seat is good/bad, but every bike needs some type of luggage, even if its just big enough to carry paperwork
I leave my bikes with stock pipes, can't sit on top of loud pipes, ride behind them all day........loud pipes do saves lives, but lotsof bright light in front does also.......LEDs and even extra sets
Brother and cousins all put loud pipes on their bikes and now can't hardly get them on their bikes, my brother always wants to ride one of mine

      Sound good
I’m also looking for an iron 1200 with AMF paint job era, trying to find one already equipped with all the goodies seat, exhaust..and suspension If im lucky, but the price can’t be less than 7 to 9 k for those of under 20k miles.
Can you tell me what a good deal for an iron1200 with specs mentioned above.
      Take care and ride safe

@@Nezo5000 I think it's jdpower that will give you price range
Pipes and air already there going to cost more, of course for any customizing the seller will want you to pay for it, but remember you may not want the customizing that was done
I've been getting mine the way I want it, and it cost some, but this is a forever bike

Any suggestions where to look for offers online rather than CycleTrader?

Anything to reverse the factory EPA settings that make the 80's engine design choked and run very hot

When Norton rubber mounted the Atlas it lost 30 lbs. When Harley rubber mounted the Sportster it gained 80 lbs what is up with that?

Boy, I think this is bad advice. You don't need a tiny purse on your swing arm and the sound of your exhaust is the last thing anyone needs to modify. In 65 years and over 250,000 miles of riding my two worst accidents have been on a BMW and a Sportster. The BMW accident was because the girl on the back and I had been drinking way too much. The Sportster accident was because the suspension and brakes were garbage. Assuming your tires are good: #1 - get some decent shocks on the back. Good middle of the road Progressives are only about $350-$400 and Saddleman seats are the same. Save your skin before you relax your butt. #2 Check your brake pads, rotors, cables and fluid and consider new or upgrades. #3 Get a decent seat. #4 Get the bars that work for your style of riding. Unless you are a poser, exhaust and breather mods are for making the engine run better, not so you can sound like the Sons of Anarchy bs. Engine mods follow items 1-4.

A better investment would be: sell it and buy a Yamaha Bolt. With the extra cash, you could take a vacation.

Best two investments for your sportster:
point 1 sell this women bike and buy a softail
point 2 never ever think about to ride a sportster again.
    Problem solved
