- In this episode I will restore this Invader console made by Gakken. It's not working and the screen is broken and it needs a full restoration.
I started by finding out why the console wasn't working. I don't have schematics for teh circuit board so it's much harder to try to figure out what's wrong. I first tried to replace the capacitors as they're parts that will break when they get old and it's a common issue with older electronics. Next I looked for any broken older joints. I found one and after fixing it the screeen started to work. There was still some issues so I figured it there's likely other broken joints too, or some dirt causing the circuit to short. I cleaned the borad and reflowed the solder in all of the joints on the board. After this the game started working normally.
The switch for the difficulty level was still stuck. I removed it fro mteh board and cleaned it with my ultrasonic cleaner in isopropyl alcohol.

Next I took a photo of the broken screen and recreated it in Photoshop. I printed the graphix fro a new screen on a plastic sheet and cut it into shape. Similarly I took photo of the sticker and used that and other pictures I was able to find from the internet to recreate the sticker and printed it on a silver sticker paper.
I cleaned the screws and battery contact in the ultrasonic cleaner and replated them with nickel.

Thanks for watching, I hopy you enjoyed the video!

OMG! This exact game was my Christmas gift from my grandmother about 40 years ago in Japan. I still remember this like yesterday!
I was hero because I let my neighbour friends to play. Thank ODD THINKING for fixing this. Thank you grandma, I miss you.
That's heartwarming. I miss my grandma too.
Hey, is this game basically the same as Fire Away by Tandy? Because it sure sounds the same. It's very Space Invaders-y, with red UFOs racing by at the top of the screen.
I got one about the same time in Australia for Christmas
💝
@@jessragan6714 Yep, it is the same but this is the original i think
and imagine nobody has probably even gotten to play one of these for 20+ years or more!
Thanks again for showing off one of these older, more obscure hardware. They are always fascinating to watch.
Yeah baby, Odd Tinkering's videos is always, so *very fascinating* to watch...😎
All the cleaning shenanigans with the Ducktor alway makes me smile 😃
Getting these old LCD games working again makes me so happy. I'm so glad you were able to fix it.
This is older than LCD. It's a VFD (vacuum fluorescent display). The entire display is a vacuum tube. This is old, old school.
@@TheRealMentat001 Very common on early VCRs, too!
@@TheRealMentat001 I have two bartop card game arcade machines from ComputerKinetics that use dot matrix VFD as their displays, and those machines were made around 1970. Pretty much impossible to replace. And one got smashed while the machine was being shipped to me
@@JosephDavies and the speak and spell
@@TheRealMentat001 yeah.. LCD.. that's cutting edge! This is Proper Old Skool!
This guy is a jack of all trades and I love it! The videos are so calming, and a good reminder there's people that throw stuff away for people like this guy to fix up and breathe new life into. I had one of these as a hand-me-down from my grandpa, and it's awesome, I spent hours with it.
Awesome content!
been rewatching your vids while in the hospital and you never disappoint! keep it up!!
I wish all the best for you!
I hope you get well soon!
Wish you a swift recovery, man!
thank you for all the well wishes! hoping to get out in the coming weeks!!
Get well soon 💪🏼
I find your videos really therapeutic. I love the fact there's no talking. I watch them before I go to sleep or if I just want to zone out 😊
Ha same. I like to sit down with a cup of coffee and just relax with these kind of videos, and be amazed at what these guys can fix.
No talking, no loud music, no self aggrandizement by the narrator. Perfect for me.
I wonder why my headache gone after watching this video..
😊
I don't even know what the Hell that Thing is but these Repair Videos made me realize how cool it is to preserve old Consoles and Stuff
Cool restoration!
Friendly tip: don’t afraid to use flux for soldering and reflow contacts. It makes soldering easier and beautiful!
So glad you don't feel the need to add music to these videos. They are intensely relaxing and gratifying to watch. Just seeing someone quietly and meticulously restore things that would otherwise just be thrown away, it's spellbinding.
The love and care you put into this repair is truly inspiring to a retro enthusiast. Every old game or handheld should get this kind of love no matter how dirty or broken it looks.
As a person with sensory processing disorder I love your videos, getting to hear the sounds instead of just a voice over
do not ever change the way you present everything - its always perfection - one of my fav channels on youtube
Fun Fact, these were known as Galaxy Invader consoles here in the UK, they came in 3 varieties. This model, a Galaxy Invader 1000 model and a Galaxy Invader 10000 model (The 10000 one being the rarest and most expensive to collect).
I have all 3 and grew up playing the 1000 model of this as a kid (given by grandparents as it was my fathers), it's incredibly fun and amazing to see you restore such a device that's so dear to my heart and childhood. Thanks buddy! Keep it up!
Being able to repair all those consoles and stuff, must be so cool...
Gotta respect these videos, this thing was almost beyond repair. Its absolutely astonishing the amount of time you take to perfect what once was lost.
I find it pretty hard to watch other restoration videos, because I've seen some where they've intentionally made the condition of the item they're "repairing" worse ahead of time. I find it soothing to watch your videos, though, and look forward to your new uploads. Keep up the good work!
This started off looking pretty impossible. As always an amazing job.
The lengths he goes to make old, broken tech work like new is truly remarkable. Crazy to think there are repairmen this committed out there.
The best part about these restorations is how they take me back to when I was a young boy. Thank you so much!
You did a great job ! Now we can play together 😂
You were so lucky when you restored that mining lantern
this channel is what taught me that stickers can be removed easily with isopropyl alcohol
It's nice to see The Ducktor's star power branding used as a force for good.
I had one of these at my aunties house when I was a kid but in yellow. Unfortunately she passed away in 2019 so we had to clear her house. me and my brother were desperate to find it but unfortunately we never did. This video has brought back so many memories.
I was in disbelief when you said the taped together screen was as good as new, then chuckled when I realized it was a joke. You got me...
[Sigh] I had that exact console as a kid. So glad you got that working.
I still have my Texas Instruments space invaders game. We got it when I was walking with my brother and dad, and we found $20 in the street. When you’re 8, it feels like you won the lottery (in 1982). Anyway our dad let us go to a toy store and pick anything we wanted. We chose space invaders! Even though this one was a different company, still brings back lots of fun memories. Thanks so much!
Thank you for this one, that bring back memories when i was playing that game. Very much good memories with my brother on who's doing the best score.
I had this space invaders game. I had it around 86/87.
True story: one day a friend and I went into my garage and closed the door so it would be nice and dark to see the game better.
However upon leaving the garage the inside safety cable snapped. We were locked inside and the mother called the fire service to get us out.
It was scary being only 7 at the time. Not the dark, or being locked in but the whupping I was sure to get from my mum.
I will never cease to be amazed at the simplicity of these old electronic games.
I will also never cease to be amazed at how obnoxious their sound effects are.
Watching these videos always makes me wish I could understand how electronics work so I can fix my faulty controllers
You can actually learn a bit with these. And as most of his video shows, a lot of problems are dirt or corrosion blocking contacts that can easily be cleaned.
They're also good guides on how to disassemble them!
That my sir, is probably the cleanest plastic duck on this planet.
tip: ultrasonic cleaning works best when the cleaning solution itself vibrates, but the object being cleaned does not.
That is why commercial models have small baskets that hold the dirt objects to keep it away from vibrations.
Man the good old days. I used to spend hrs on the football one. Loved it..
I realized that this restoration project was most critical to deal with.
Odd tinkering ducktor is very smart. This guy is amazing.❤
My favorite part is the screw driver turning and the noise of the gloves crinkling, plastic noise and screw driver turning. So satisfying lol
Obsessed with the 'mad scientist' vibe
Who knew that this would end up being a prop in Star Wars Asoka.
Console restorations are my fav!
I love watching these videos, and even after seeing it done 100 times and doing it myself, soldering always looks like pure magic to me
I was so relaxed by how satisfying this video is that when the game started making noises it startled me! Lol
Satisfying to see how to resolve all the issues
I come back to this channel every once in a while and I just love the restorations. Brings back my want to fix things.
I don't know why but there's something beautiful seeing it still kicking after the years.
I absolutely love the ‘Tape the plastic and done’ bit, I was genuinely surprised, thinking “Whaaaat? He’s not going to make a new one? I don’t think I’ve ever even seen him *touch* tape much less use it in a repai- oh, it was a bit, thank goodness!” Lol, got a good laugh out of me. Love the videos man, please, keep it up!
I had this back in the day. Many fond memories
Awesome restore! Love seeing stuff I played with as a kid come back to life. Keep em coming ODD! GOD Bless.
You really should buy and use some flux to help with the soldering job, specially the reflow. The "score" is showing stuff that doesn't look like a number, probably has bad solders or it has dead segments. But hey, now it works! Good job!
I had exactly that same model, only mine was impeccable, I sold it when I entered high school, because the joystick broke and after repairing it about 5 times I knew it was time to let it go, what good memories
Legend says that without the Ducktor this isn't possible.
It is so cool to see these old games come roaring back to life. You and Ducktor triumph again! Thank you again for your awesome work and videos. God bless. Rev. D.
Wow, this one was a really interesting project, that device was so entirely broken and you managed to bring it back to life with a lot of skill and patience. Well done.
Awesome work. I had this exact machine when I was younger, inherited from my parents. The only difference was the company was called CGL. The only thing it's missing on this restoration is the little black gasket/cover behind the control lever - it was a textured black rubber/vinyl.
That's so cool!! Thanks for reviving these great pieces of gaming history. Keep up the great work!!
Odd, Awesome Restorations, and My Mechanics, best channels on CZcams for anyone who wants to see what true craftsmanship and skill looks like. Excellent work, as always!
This brings back so many memories. I had that game when I was a kid.
Thanks for doing a variety of things, and for not playing annoying music. Love the channel.
I had this one when I was little and I also worked in a company long time ago where we could have done all the repairs you do here. It is very satisfying to watch you work. Reminds me on the good times. I am more of a old camera repair guy, but I just repaired an old automatic record player and now I want to repair this kind of stuff as well. What have you done? ;)
it is pure therapy to watch the videos you make! Keep up the good work! Cheers from Norway.
I’ve always loved your wonderful work. I’ve watched all your videos. I love seeing you take something that is trash to a treasure. Keep up the fantastic work. I look forward to seeing your next restoration. Your lighter restorations is what got me hooked. I’ve been watching ever since. Most of your videos I have watched multiple times.
the perfect video to watch before sleeping :)
You do such awesome work to keep old things alive and functioning.
You had me with the taped up screen for a second 😂
the little duck gettings its bill brushed made me laugh out loud - enjoyable video, thanks for sharing !
I really do enjoy your videos. I get so excited when you repair these gaming objects from my childhood. Thank you!
Something about just random clinking things like plastic or metal on your vids makes it an amazing white noise
Beautiful to see a new video, I love watching you and it's amazing how you always bring new tricks and such original ideas!
That restoration is really amazing. Thank you so much Odd. Your skills are awesome. Greetings to the the Ducktor.
It is my favorite restoration channel, it caught my attention to see another channel that imitates all aspects of this one, called Restoration EG
I literally LOL'd at that "good as new!" part!
Another fantastic job from you and the Ducktor!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You, Sir, are a wizard.
I love how the ducktor is basically your mascot
This was great! I love that you re-did the stickers
I like how your videos don't have some weird non copyright music in the background and that it's just the sounds of the item and tools you use
its crazy how far technology has come
Oh wow, I remember that thing lmao, I was born in 1977 so yeah, I remember a ton of these games lmao, I had 1 called Tank Attack, it was a handheld that looked like a gun, was a dark green and all, man I had so much fun with that thing, still got it somewhere in my boxes
Might be the most relaxing thing in the world to watch. Especially for us 70's and 80's kids. New sub here and I'm really loving ur channel, thank you kind sir.
I remember this game well 👍 great video. Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That screen turned out great👊
This was just used as a prop in the 2nd episode of Star Wars Ashoka!
I always love to see your videos with the illustrious Ducktor!!
Even cleaned the screws, amazing job!
I remember my friend had one of these when I was little. Always enjoyed seeing who could to better during sleepovers…
Your videos never disappoint. Especially with the retro videogames
ah, Space Invaders, the second game I ever played at the arcade. The first was Pong. (Yes, I am old.) Excellent job!
We can't imagine a video without the duck. It's like Cheese pizza without cheese or Paris without the Eiffel tower, it's impossible.
Congratulations, i like to watch your videos.
Fond memories of these old games including pac man one too
I couldn't wait to see how the screen was going to be repaired
Great workmanship
Great vid
Great channel
Was looking for this comment, the case looked familiar and I remember having a similar yellow Pacman one. My father and I would take turns to beat each other's score, good memories from my childhood in the early to mid eighties.
so unbelievably eerie... I saw this EXACT console in a retro game shop yesterday and thought "huh, maybe I could fix this thing up and get it working at home". This video might work as a tutorial haha. Very cool!
I remember taking that into school on the day we stopped for Christmas holidays. My folks spoiled myself and my sister as kids.
This level of dedication. Love your videos.
The most satisfying part for me is how you made new sticker based on the original one
I know it was a typo, but I have decided to use the much superior word 'reflof' instead of reflow from now on.
Another lovely restoration video.
Absolutely BRILLIANT, as always.
These videos are honestly top 5 in things of all time on CZcams
I'm Brazilian and I always follow your channel, congratulations friend, excellent work!! 🎮🕹️
Great to see that the Ducktor is branching out with their own brand of isopropyl alcohol.
This is one of the oldest games to ever exist
Whilst the restoration is satisfying!
I love to see what else you can get into just to restore later! 🙂
my father: alcohol is not the answer
The Ducktor: Bullshit!
