I hope this will do Barath Muthusamy, because this video took one heckin long time to put together. I'm really quite proud of what I've assembled together on this build, and I suppose the secret about my day job is out. Any questions about anything I’ve chosen to run? This bike check is different from most other ones for a couple of reasons. There is a lot more thought process put into why this bike is for you, and also your experience with it. Other than just naming parts and why you like them, you highlighted how this bike gave you experiences. You might dress like a Joey but you are a-hell of a rider. I became a fanboy of this channel in 2020 and continuing in 2021. I was wrong about the 29'er wheels. With all the thorough research I did lol.
I have Barath's approval, this video is now a success worthy of the lack of sleep. 🙏

And if quirky means keeping it real with nothing to prove, bucking trends, and surrounding yourself with truly good people then I guess I’m on Team Quirky.

Oh an btw. don't know if oyu remember but I commented on one of your videos on Lago di garda last year. You're ride of valle diaol got me hooked. And after being there this summer, it told me a lot about your bike handling skills. Been there after a night with thunderstorms, so everything was wet and slippery and it was clearly beyond my skill level that day, I had to give it a pass. Your video made it look pretty rideable, which it turned out it wasn't for me ;-) But I will give it another try when I have the chance in dryer conditions and after some serious practicing.
I'm glad I didn't have to learn what wet Italian rocks felt like haha. Sounds adventurous!
@@DaleStone Those Italian rocks were extremely slippery. Especially in the forrest part of the 601 trail from Altissimo. It was a hot day and the the air was still extremely moist after a nightly thunderstorm that it could not absorb any of the moisture that covered the rocks. In fact it was one of my most frustrating days on the bike. Should have been one of my highlights of the year but the lower part of 601 was just horrible to ride with no grip at all on the rocks. I was hoping that during the roughly one hour of climbing to the start of valle diaol conditions would somehow improve, but they were practically unchanged. With no grip, my confidence gone I decided to call it quits after the first technical section of the sculls trail (=valle diaol). Hope for better conditions this year.
Anybody who has seen more than a handful of your videos will have been able to tell that you are an upstanding and genuinely nice guy. It was apparent to me way early on and I noted it in my first ever comment on your channel. The closing couple of minutes of this video confirm it.
I’ll also note you are living the dream: riding bikes (extremely well) for fun; designing bikes (also extremely well it would appear) in your day job; well educated; and surrounded with a great looking group of friends.
The bike check was extremely well done. But I’ll have to rewatch it several times because the honest truth is that much of it was way over my head. But that’s how one learns. I’m sure I will have a question or two once I have a better handle on the nuances of what you presented. But you are a natural presenter.

Don’t know you, never met you. But dale you are 100% in my opinion a legend. Spot on about people’s judgment regarding if you’re not the “cool” guy with the latest MTB trends. I’m a quiet guy. I choose to hang out with my dog and ride. Not so much for him (he’s 16. But in his prime we were gnarley). Back to my point. I reluctantly went on a group ride and chose to ride my hardtail (150 front travel. More enduro style geometry). Only recognized 2 of the people and my buddy. Well, the WTF’s “how is this guy”. My normal riding attire is vans, dickies and a t-shirt. Also I forgot my helmet so all I had was my skate helmet. The ride was 2 respectable climbs and 3 good downhills with tech, gaps , drops etc. some good doubles you can triple.
So I just hung back and rode. Listening to the comments here and there. Luckily my buddy knew better and let these folks say whatever. After the first climb when they needed a rest I just stayed on my bike waiting. First downhill I stayed back. Riding my normal lines. By the 2nd climb people wanted to talk. Asking questions etc. I just kept riding. Rest of the ride I was in front. Told my buddy I had things to do and was just gonna “ride”. He laughed and said see ya @ work.
All they saw was my ass for about 4 seconds. Turned out to be a fun ride. HahahHa. Anyway. Don’t judge people.

I love all of your videos; I discovered your channel back in August of 2019 while recovering from a bad MTB accident (tib/fib FX, 2 plates 17 screws, 3 subsequent surgeries) but this may have been one of my favorites as it gives us some insight into you as a person. So often people are treated differently based on what they have, how they look, etc. and we (myself included) likely miss out on some wonderful interactions based on those biases. I think everything on your bike is great because it represents you. Glad to hear your shoulder is doing well, please keep up the content and be safe!

Just watched this video. It’s nice to put a backstory to your channel. It’s hard to believe it takes anyone more than 5 minutes to figure out you are one of the best technical riders out there on a mountain bike.

Thank you for making this and specifically talking about your dimensions as a person and the frame size and wheel choice. My 2015 Range M 27.5 was stolen and I'm looking at a 2020 Sight M 27.5 as a replacement, this video has me further leaning in that direction.

From all your videos Dale, this is my favourite one. It puts on the side how much of an amazing rider you are, how cool your ride is, how lucky you really are being able to ride the places you have. It shows how much of a cool dude you are and how nice of a human being you are. Things I also learn the only time I rode with you in the agreement Forest before you move out west.

From the instantaneous, yet smooth engagement to the almost nonexistent rolling resistance and the priceless silence they offer.
I thought I would miss the buzz, but hearing the sounds from the trail and the wind blowing totally makes up for the painful reminder of how much these things cost.
The downside is that I can hear my rotors rubbing and adjusting that in Formula brakes feels like doing a cardiovascular surgery.
Took me Dale 9 months for this freaking algorithm to show me this video of yours. I don't know how the hell I slipped even though I am watching your channel for longer time. I love it, that was hands down the best bike check ever. I liked so much the last part about riding, people's attitude etc. I feel the same being a foreigner in a country where most people don't speak English or they are not open, so riding alone and trying to fit in was hard but eventually find couple of people I can go out and just have fun. Thanks for sharing your story!
In the end it's all about finding a group that makes it fun! Though solo riding is also important. 🙂

I think the bell is a great idea too. I used to live right near SFU and ride the burnaby mountain trails a lot. They are all dual use and have a lot of blind corners, so it's really easy to startle hikers. I ended up buying one of those bear bells that jingles as you ride and attaching it to my stem (inspired by you). It made a huge difference! Being loud made riding those trails a lot less contentious. I'll probably keep using the bell for any busy dual use trail system I ride in the future. Thanks for the idea!
Totally agreed, the function of being able to let someone know you're coming up on them in a completely non aggressive, almost funny way is amazing. Better than a loud hub, tried that too!

As a fellow XC tire in the back rider on the shore, I've been super happy to discover Teravail Honcho. It rolls and has about the same amount of grip as Reckon (my previous go to tire for the rear), but in my experience this year Teravail tires are considerably more durable. I've had literally zero flats this year in my rear tires (Teravail), despite managing to flat the front one once (Maxxis DHF).

wow! i remember seeing this video when it first came out and subconsciously avoided it for a month as it's "yet another bike check videooOoO". this morning you uploaded the video with the Norco Revolver and after that, this auto-played. and I LOVED IT! From the meticulously planned out bike setup to the history and philosophy behind your choices and decisions, to the light heartedness that still carries on with it; it wasn't just a bike check, it was more of a life check and a glimpse as to who really is holding on to those handlebars with that dinky orange bell!
and I very much relate to giving the "elitism" that plagues mountain biking a hard time; keep deceiving the looks of others dale! A damn shame some folks want to hand out judgements in this very mental health healing escapism of a hobby.

My XT shifter levers broke the same way, common failure point design flaw, glad Shimano warrantied it fast (I heard they redesigned the spring last year)
I run basically the same tires as you, 2.5" Minion dhf and 2.4" Rekon. I'm really happy with that setup.

Stoked to hear your high praise for the Sight. I've been trying to get my hands on one for the past couple years but they have been outta stock every time. I put my order in for a 2021 C2 in November this time to make sure I get my hands on it. Lets just hope Covid doesn't ruin it for me and they are able to produce enough frames to ship some to the North East. At the time I ordered it they gave me an eta of April. Womp womp

I have purple Onyx hubs(laced to 26”rabbit hole rims)on my Chromag stylis.Along with a oil slick spur Bell.(found it online in Germany but it’s discontinued as far as I know).But the thing I like most is your attitude!

Now that's what my bike looks like most of the time. My legs are also very short for my height, however Im 5'3" and weigh a lot more than you. I possibly made a mistake in up-sizing and can only use about 1/2 my 125mm dropper travel. ... and my fork and shock are well past there service intervals!

Good and thorough bike check Dale, couldn't agree with you more on the new Shimano 12spd stuff. On the whole steep STA thing, I'll have to agree to disagree on that point, for the riding I like to do and where I live and ride-it works well if your rides are all basically up or down, but not for longer, pedally type rides on rolling to moderate steep climbing.
Also have a 9point8 FallLine and it's lasted me 4 years without doing anything but a simple, basic colar re-grease a few times and still no play in it. Sadly the main dust seals are gone now, so have to get some new ones and do a full tear down and rebuild.
Almost forgot - don't use the term mid-life crisis when until you get past at least 30 ;-) :-p
Agreed, a steep seat tube angle is very poor and downright dangerous when you do any descending with your post up. Out East I used my dropper more than my shifter (meaning the steep STA is great), but this is not a common opinion, and explains why the Revolver is a couple of degrees slacker than the Sight. I'm just speed running the existential dread category. 🤫

also you are very hard on your bike!! Says a lot about the quality of the components that you haven't had issues with, given that even some XTR stuff you had problems with :')
UW represent! XTR is past the price to performance inflection point at the sacrifice of durability. And other than the brakes they were all technically consumables anyways haha.

Awesome video mate! Just wanted to get your feedback as im going to get a Sight A2 but cant decide if i should go with a medium or large... im 176cm/75kg/84cm inseam, test riding the medium and large in the carpark the medium felt little cramped, knees closer to the bars and a feeling as if the seat needed to go back a bit further with about 50-60mm of the seat post sticking out, the large felt much better (id just need to limit the dropper height a little though) but the trails are much different to a carpark.
I'm the same height as you, and went with the medium as I prefer a smaller bike. Most people our height go with the large and do not regret that decision. 🙂

Team top tall! I am also mostly torso and ride a size down. Short arms and legs...
I currently have a Giant Trance 2. Love it. But would consider a more Enduroish bike. The Norco Range and Slayer come to mind. Did not consider the Sight until now. May also completely pimp out my Trance. Upgrade the fork to a Fox 36 160 and a DPX2 rear.
Again - great video. You are a FAAAAR better rider than I with much bigger sends and if it can be done on an All Mountain 160.......
The only style of trail that I ever want more bike on is the fast and chunky stuff where there is no substitute for travel. But I don't ride that style often, and when I do I require physio afterwards haha.

Dale try Wheelsmith Spoke Prep. I've never had a spoke loosen off or ever re-true wheels, but I'm likely running higher spoke tension then you. Glad to hear that our 9.8 stuff is low maintenance compared to a good part of the rest of your bike.

Ok, watched it again. Interestingly, just as well done the second time around lol!
Anyway, a few questions do crop up...
- why did you cut your bars down to 760mm? More clearance? I’d presume it makes the bike more responsive/twitchy also. Yes? No?
- why the 170mm cranks? I’m thinking of doing this also for better ground clearance as I get more pedal strikes than I’d prefer. Any downsides for me to consider?
- your bearing-based 9.8 dropper post and remote. Being new since September to MTB I’m apparently naive to have thought a dropper post and remote is, well, a dropper post and remote. That said, I sometimes have trouble adjusting mine on the fly to get the post position as I’d like. Does your setup make it easier? (As an aside, I’ve often thought it would be great to have pre-sets for 2 or 3 post positions depending on what I’m riding).
Last thought... how in the heck am I supposed to catch up to your skill level if you are riding 4,000 km and 200,000 metres in elevation a year? Slow it down would ya!
1. Bar width should be proportional (not necessarily equal) to shoulder width. In terms of leverage, the force at your hands will be very slightly higher with narrow bars, but the forces at your shoulder will be reduced as the bracing angle increases. Narrower bars also allow for a greater range of motion on the bike, and also help clear trees (something that is more of an East coast problem).
2. 170mm cranks are what this bike was designed around, and I switched to increase ground clearance and minimize pedal strikes. Your effective gear ratio changes slightly when decreasing the moment arm length.
3. A cheap lever will feel notchy, or be hard to press, or not be very durable (wearing out the lever or snapping cables). A dedicated bearing is inherently much smoother than some rough sliding fit. A nice post also just works, where a cheap post will fail with water and dirt ingress. I've broken enough posts to not want to deal with that anymore. Some posts have a set number of pre-indexed positions (like e*13), but in my mind why do that when you could have infinite positions INCLUDING those heights? Tried it myself and wasn't a big fan.

Really enjoyed the vid! Was trying to work out if you wear the basketball shorts and the bell etc. in order for people to underestimate you (sandbagging or car term to be a "sleeper" who looks crap but goes like stink) or whether it was to provoke a reaction from people? Honestly I would think it looks a bit funny myself but at the end of the day I don't care as long as someone is fun to ride with, that's my metric. Lots of laughs per km :)
Every choice I make is based purely on function or finances, often to the detriment of aesthetics. The fact that it all completes the sleeper look effectively is a bonus. Well said with smiles per mile!
@@DaleStone having 2 teenage boys who ride too i know what you mean about the finances ;) basically i look for stuff on sale as i have to buy at least 3 of everything. Where I won't save is on safety gear (function) there it's got to be the right gear for the job as I've had too many injuries and don't need anymore!! btw still enjoy watching your Swiss Alps vids

@@DaleStone it might go against your nature of avoiding trends, but their Nebulousness hazy IPA is also great.. really all their beers are great if you find yourself in Mount Pleasant.. living within walking distance has not been good for my power/weight ratio haha.
