11 Super Cheap MTB Upgrades
Vložit

- Today we will review 11 of the cheapest upgrades you can make to your mountain bike. I covered 10 even cheaper ones in another video, but most of these do more to actually improve performance than those did. These upgrades are so cheap, that tires didn’t even make the cut. Enjoy!

There are too many different ones to link to specifics. Please research what your air fork or can uses directly from your manufacturer.
Stealth axles are another thing which will be dependent on fork brand and width, so do your research. If you are unsure what your fork width is just look up your bike on its manufacturer's website and check the specs. When it doubt, go to your local bike shop and they might just have it!
Single Speed Chainring
For most bikes with 2 or 3 rings up front, 104mm will be the size. How many speeds you have at the rear makes no difference up front.

Pro tip: when removing the little screws on your pedals and can't get them out, take a hack saw and cut a slit in the top of the screw and use a flathead screwdriver to remove it
Edit : works on all exposed screw heads
thanks
Ta mate, great tip!
That’s the smartest simple trick in the world thank you
Even better to cut an X and use a special X screwdriver with flat nose, more grip and less prone to breaking the slot you just created.
Also using heat will soften threadlocker fluids
You can use a dremel if you’re impatient

for stuck pins cut a groove with a hacksaw or cutoff wheel (for that sketchy brake bedding tool) then use a flathead screwdriver to remove. Don't forget your safety squints...
Thats a legit idea! I was thinking there has to be a better way to get those out. Good idea man.
Dremel tool works fast too. Just make sure you get a thin cutoff disc for making the slot.
Left handed drill bit does amazing things to stuck bolts/screws.
Don't forget heat
“Safety squints”
Still remember going to the bike shop and asking for some dry lube for my chain and they told me it didn't exist and made me feel pretty embarassed. One of many reasons I won't go back to that bike shop ever again and why I don't like them very much anymore.
Oof
It just straight up don’t exist 💀
Another tip I've found for converting to 1x is to leave the front derailleur on. If you don't have a clutch rear derailleur there's a good chance your chain will come off even with a narrow wide chainring. Leaving the front derailleur on, but removing everything else including the shifter, means you have a super cheap and functional chain guide. Just adjust the limit screws accordingly.
Here in Thailand chain guides are dirt cheap (3$)

you know, it's been a pretty shitty few days, I went otb on a jump and broke 2 ribs, I'll be off the bike for about a month, and this video really cheered me up (especially the part where you take an angle grinder to your front tire to bed in the pads 😂), thanks seth!

If you are on a good bike, you will enjoy it too.
It's healthy, good for your environments makes you independent of public transport and allows you to circumvent most heavy traffic you'd encounter in a car.
It's cheaper than a car too
Get yourself a Bike maybe start with a more cheap/used bike but dont buy crap, i think seth has some videos about this. Im 14 and make wheelies as far as i want, I ride a littlebit downhill and with friends its amazing do ride a mountainbike if you can controll it and make some tricks with it(took me about 2 years to learn wheelies)
@Kai Disselkoen then you either have a very good bike or a very cheap car...
I'm guessing the first one ^^

Glad you mention keeping lube away from disc brake rotors. For that reason, I recommend DRIP teflon lube over aerosols hands-down. Triflow 2oz drip bottles come with a straw to help direct lube application, but an ever better solution IMO is to get a finer metal needle lube bottle. Just throw in some old nuts and bolts to act as an agitator to get the teflon off the bottom of the bottle and in solution with a shake before applying to your bike. Look for needle lubers with a screw top and rubber cap for the needle.
Seth has the best mtb channel hands down

Great video. I went from 3x10 to 1x11 (11-46), best thing I did. Gorilla tape for the rims is a great tip, local bike shop recommended it ! Much cheaper than paying for an overpriced rim tape.
I stand by velox .

OSHA would make me loose my job because I don’t wear a hard hat while performing simple tasks.
6:47 Tryouts for the new Joker .. "Wanna know how I got these scars?" hint it involved a bike wheel and power tools. :)
These older bike hack video's are somehow super satisfying to watch.
When seth said "when your fork bottoms out." I had a flash back to the walgoose on a drop off and the sound it made lol
Im definitely a fan of dry lube keeps it slick no matter what the conditions!! I know its not ideal for everything but in the conditions I ride in its perfect and lasts the longest.
which lube do you use to be able to do this in the winter? how does it work in -10C or colder? how much water, snow, slush can it take?
@@mtbboy1993 Im not sure of the brand im not really biased when it comes to that. My last bottle was the WD40 dry lube I do use a lot of it on my chain and cassette before I ride in the snow or rain and it seems fine at the end of an hour ride.
@@FatGuyBiking lubing the cassette? why? I ride for multiple hours if I can.
@@FatGuyBiking I haven't tried any of their stuff.
I tend to find that Dry Lube doesn't last all that long on wet muddy rides. Especially once the rear dérailleur is clogged with mud, which can sometimes be as little as 5 mins depending on the trails.
So for me I tend to use dry Lube and simply accept that the chain will come back in a pretty bad state. Then my bike sounds quiet and smooth at the very least until I get out of the carpark xD
Thankfully I have not had any worse rust than surface discolouration after a ride. That said, I have one bike that has an early 90's (late 80's?) Deore that has no drivetrain rust, seems they made them of more rust proof materials back then rather than light. Whereas my current one started getting surface rust within a few months, despite being lubed before and after each ride.
I remember when i was a kid me and my friends would go around the parking lot to steal cool looking valve caps lol, well at least we replaced it with the stock valve caps.
We called them 'Chromies'. 🤣
I need exactly this channel but also for Road Bikes.
Only road bikers don't do upgrades like this to their bikes. They replace expensive parts with even more expensive parts to save small amounts of weight.
These videos are excellent. Thank you. I'm so glad I found your channel. I actually found it through BKXC. Thanks!
Metal music & Seth’s bike hacks is a great combo! Enjoyed that 10 seconds during the break pad bit hahaha. Need more of this combo!
Do the Stuff to maintain your bike (like grease, sealant) video like you said you were gonna do in the toolbox vid.
first it needs to stop raining so we can put some mileage on that new rig!
Maintenance stuff would be awesome! Looking forward to it.
Awesome video.
You are so right about these upgrades lasting a lifetime. My bike was stolen 3 years ago, but those 10-pack colourful valve caps are still lying around in my garage.
Good thing the thief didn't get those valve caps!
@@Durwood71 lol
Thanks so much. This brought a smile to my face. I’m in the ER. This cheered me right up.
Great tips Seth, keep them coming!
In addition I can also recommend the following:
- carbon bottle holder
- neoprene chain guard
- chain guide
- silicone grips
- keramic jockey wheels
- designer handlebar cap
And removing most decals with a hairdryer makes the bike look more smooth.
Cheers from The Netherlands!
5:16 wow was not expecting that
6:42 when you eat taco bell and you gotta take a dump but you know you'll clog the toilet, but you proceed to crap anyway
This video series has been so helpful as I have never had MTB specific tools or parts until I got my first real MTB, which is an Intense Tracer 27.5 (I had a Diamondback comp 29er but it was not at all the right thing for my riding or body). My passion lays with racing motorcycles but MTB is a close second. Thanks Seth!
Already love it just because it's about cheap upgrades
Thanks for all of the great content Seth
I found all your videos very entertaining. Because:you are skilful, professional and genuine!
To be honest man I started out only watching your videos for your calming voice when I’m wasted. A month ago I actually tried mtb at my local bike park (snuck in. Its closed for quarantine) and I’m hooked.
Hey just a word of advice on how to remove those stainless steel pegs from platform petals. Try using pliers called end cutters or end nippers. They do an awesome job of latching onto even the smallest amount of metal protruding from the pedal. Great content as always, keep up the great work!
OSHA would like a word with you...
#first?
Thanks for putting us on to this information, I Just recently got me a Carrera Vendetta and want to try and future proof it a little for every day riding so this was a super useful video!
You can also convert a 3x drivetrain to a 2x by removing the largest chanting and replacing it with a bash ring from BBG Bashguard. Did this on my old XC bike, and it's great! Still have lots of range, and it gave me confidence to start trying to learn more trials kinds of skills where I kept bashing the chainring into rocks
Which size?
LOL, love the gold chain bling on you and Drama.

Love this type of video!!!!
Great for us MTB beginners..
Now to add some spacers on my fork 😂😂😂
Awesome video as always! Still rockin my aluminum valve stem covers from your 2016 video!
You should've mentioned that dry lube washes away very easily and isnt very durable, making it a not bad choice in wet conditions. I didn't know this and almost bought dry lube in winter. Great video as always :D
1:12 easy outs have been out for like 35 years man!
Volume reducers in my forks was absolutely epic upgrade! Great video Seth :)
Damn, I remember back when you had like no subs, I remember watching How to true you wheels with a zip tie, one thing that hasn’t changed is your high quality videos and explanations.
You had me dying when you whipped out the angle grinder and took it to the wheel

1:10 Pro tip to get those worm screws out: heat them up using a soldering iron. That liquifies the loctite and then they come right out.
Good call on the bash guard, I just ordered the one you recommended since my new Trance 3 didn’t come with one from the factory.

2:53 Hahahahahaha - I was thinking you were going to show us the upgrade to a quick release Maxle !!!
Nukeproof comes with the hex wrench removable through axles and I had been thinking that the Maxle would be so much better so I could easily fix those inevitable flats as I am heading over our Central Oregon logging roads. :)
Great video as usual mate! That grinder stunt though??? 😬😬

I love having the single speed up front your a life saver i can now have one perfect gear up front instead of having 2 that are to small and one that is to big like i used to its awsome thanks
First epic Vid as always Seth! 👌👌😍

Seth, i normally hate videos that aren't what i subscribed for. In your case, i subbed for the riding, but i have to say i enjoy these almost as much lol. You always keep every video interesting, and knowledgable & you have grown into my favorite channel on CZcams hands down because of that. The funny thing is, i don't even ride lol I just bought my first MTB last Friday, and i am more than excited to get started learning to ride trails. I wanted to thank you for the quality of videos you put out, somehow you inspired me to fall in love with a sport before i even try it haha & i believe that speaks volumes on the quality of content you create. Hope to catch you on a trail someday in the future, thanks again bro!
That gold chain bit was awesome! Thanks for a laugh.
hey seth with getting the peddle pins out you could always grind or cut a notch into the old pin (if it still is above the peddle) and use a flat head to screw it out
FYI The Infinlon Lube shown is like $60/can. Amazon has great deals on similar products.
Chain oil is actually fine, see my comment below.
😁 A well done vid, nice pace and content Seth.
That brake bedding was the most genius thing I ever saw, I'm bringing the cordless 60v grinder home this week
Unless you're exclusively riding downhill or low-speed trials, there is never a good reason to switch to a 1x drivetrain. The extra gear range is ALWAYS more valuable. If your chain pops off more than once in a blue moon, it means your derailleurs are badly configured. You need to move your front derailleur down until it _juuuuust_ barely clears the chainrings when shifting, and you need to increase the spring tension on your rear derailleur to keep the chain taut. A 1x system will actually make chain-drops _more_ likely in certain circumstances, because the rear derailleur cage has to be longer to accommodate a wider range of sprocket diameters, and thus has less leverage to keep the chain taut. That's why clutched rear derailleurs had to be invented in the first place. A 2x/3x drivetrain can use closer-ratio sprockets and a shorter-cage rear derailleur, which will have more leverage to keep the chain taut.
I also run on the largest sprocket on rough terrain to keep good tension on the chain and rear derailleur, then when you come a steep climb I can easily shift the front down a sprocket for a big decrease in gear ratio👌🏽
I think the chain oil part depends on riding conditions, if you tested it with wet mud the dry lube would be more likely to wash off.
Was just about to comment on this. I live in fairly wet conditions, and the drylube can NOT be used as it washes off right away.
Just caught this video! such a solid bunch of tips Seth ❤️🤙
That bash guard looks handy! I usually get really lazy when a tree is obstructing a trail and just drag my bike over. This will be helpful!
Good video Seth do you think you will ever ride in New Zealand 🇳🇿
5:21best moment ever!!!!!!
Dude I'm super lucky I found this video.. you're my childhood bike channel for good reasons!
If you switch to schrader valves you can get 10% performance gain from performance valve caps.
Left hand drill bits are great for removing stuck screws (like pedal pins).
Buy a cheap set & use them only when you have to - or buy a good set & use them more. They spin the opposite direction and will usually back out the screw when they bite in. If not, you'll have a hole for a screw extractor.
