One of the hardest things about learning is understanding how the different components work together. Using this guide, you start with a topic that interests or relates to you. At the end of the section, other related topics are shown allowing you to pick and choose your own path to DevOps mastery.

Have been working as a Linux admin for the last 2 years. Lately not being at all excited about problems i solve day to day. And an incoming carrer jump to devops doesn't make me happier either. Wanted to switch to swe, because i already do it constantly with pleasure as a hobby, but have being scared decrease in salary after jump (because my ops experience most likely won't be counted as a legit on dev's positions).
You really did hit me hard with this "cause you'll be doing devops'y kind of problems for the next 20 years"! Because 15 or 20% cut in salary at start is not even comparable with being bored 8 hours per day for the next 20 years of my life. So i am doing it!

Nowadays, with plenty of tools for a DevOps to learn, it is a bit easier to become a developer instead of a DevOps. The good or bad news is, now the companies are starting to ask you to do both jobs... If you are staring your career, be prepared for a lot of study.

My advice is "go for it". Even if you change your mind at some point, the skills you learn in pursuing DevOps apply to all aspects of a career in technology.

I just accepted an inernship that was advertised as predominantly software development, only to find out later that it's mostly devops with some software development lol. Watching the video, for scenario 1 I preferred software engineer but for scenario 2 I preferred dev ops, so I guess I'll just take it as opportunity to do both and see which I prefer.

I personally prefer solving problems that are logical and easily traceable and more straight forward than those that require creative thinking or constantly debugging.

I'm really enjoying this channel. I was recently promoted to Devops Engineer coming from a Sys Admin background. I have a lot of background in scripting using Python and Poweshell and while I love automating deployments and working with container technologies in general, the one thing I've noticed...at least at my company, there is still a much higher demand for automation. I spend the majority of my day writing scripts for departments that are in a bind. Is this normal?
That’s been my experience. For all the hype and talk around scaling, CI/CD, etc, most of my time is spent helping teams remove manual tasks from their workload (with a side bonus of being able to track and measure those tasks)

Speaking as an Enterprise Architect for a Large Data Company (Insights) as a developer, you would not be asked to create a new algorithm. Algorithms have to be accepted, so they are dictated to the development staff. You may try and find a way to make it faster or any of the application characteristics improved.
New algorithms are rarely discovered by development, they may be dictated from measurement science departments.

I enjoy the simple act of coding, but there is something about the "developer job" that makes me wanna stay away from it. Idk, maybe I just find boring all the CRUD stuff and having to go through dozens of libs and frameworks docs, instead of actually write cool and efficient algorithms. Also I hate doing front end job, I wish everything was accessed from command line lol (just kidding). Maybe some day I try system programming instead of working on commercial applications. But recently I got a DevOps internship and I'm really enjoying it, I feel like I'm "actually using a computer" to make something valuable, maybe because this role expects you to have a more technical knowledge of operating systems and networks and I enjoy a lot leaning these subjects. Also, I find more joy in viewing the big picture of problems (software lifecycle, infrastructure etc) than having a "tunnel vision" like in the developer role. DevOps is for me.

I have worked as a developer for around 8 years but my jobs were mostly for legacy applications so my work spanned over technologies like C++, C and MySQL. Tired of the limited job growth I was seeing, I took a career break and took a bunch of Cloud courses and certifications. Now, 7 months later, I have landed a job as an SRE for a startup-like company. With a good hike from my previous salary too. I was happy for like two days but now I am starting to get cold feet. I love data structures and algorithms and I also want exposure to the latest technology. Is DevOps/SRE role a downgrade for people who love to deal with algorithms and coding ? Would it be hard for me to switch back to a developer role down the line if i don't like being an SRE/DevOps engineer ? Would love to know your opinion!
Hey Priyanka,
Let's break this down into segments: why are you getting cold feet after only 2 days? Is the role completely different than what you expected, or are you nervous because you are out of your comfort zone? It sounds like there is a lot that has changed: your role, your job, and the type of company that you are working for. Evaluate each of these to understand which changes are moving you forward and making you happy.
Last thing: there is an important distinction to make here: SRE is a role, DevOps is a method. I know there are a lot of places that have "DevOps engineers", but in your case I think it may be worth clarifying that you can work on data structures and algorithms *and* use the latest technology as a developer while using DevOps principles. The "devops" part is how you solve the problem, not who.
SRE on the other hand, is definitely a "who". It's the person who rolls out of bed at 2am to respond to an outage and is responsible for maintaining the uptime and reliability of the systems. While some coding is done there, it's not a developer role.
But to ultimately answer your question: I don't think it will be hard to switch back to a developer role. It could be seen as a bonus as you will transition back to development with a whole new set of skills and experiences that influence how you build fast, performant, highly available applications.

Software developer vs data science vs cloud computing vs devops
Be frontend dev about 5 years, starting to feel bored fixing old UI bugs or adding new simple features. I am in pharse of moving to be Devops. But I am afraid that I will regret not choosing to be fullstack dev instead.
Try it.
Just like writing code, fail fast: define what success looks like and try to break that as fast as possible. If you can’t, you’re on the right path for you.
And remember, it’s not a permanent decision. You can always change your mind later!
I interned as a DevOps engineer for 6 months then joined my current company as a Software Dev not really enjoying the work maybe because of old tech stack. I liked automating using Python and playing though CI/CD yamls.
Now I am finding difficult to take decision whether to continue Dev or choose DevOps, DevOps might include more Ops taks which I was not exposed as an intern. I just want a good balance and also enjoy writing code along with good architecture knowledge of how actually things working.

You're just starting your career. Experiment and try different things until you find what you like. No decision is permanent.
It isn't easy. I am developer for about 5 years. And i would be happier doing DevOps taks according to your description.

Question, from the video, TimeLine: (8:03/10:43) "summarization from what you said. Basically, Software Developer focus tends to be: color schemes design patterns, web design and web app functionality and client side interested on what they click on vs DevOps the logical aspect on productivity, functionality and performance within the use case", is this an accurate summarization?
Well, my story is I am 5 almost 6 months learning JavaScript for software development. I clicked on your video because most videos or materials online give a poor description that DevOps Developer are just automating things. Ok, but what exactly is automation and what does automating things look like? So far, your examples of what each profession does has been the best articulate description in helping someone understand what a DevOps developer does.
Finally, my question for you is, what are the pre-requisites and requirements for becoming an AWS DevOps Developer? So far to my understanding I think you need these things. Please let me know if I got any of it wrong or of, I am missing anything.
Certification (AWS): The Associates & The Developer. Terminal: mastery of the terminal and terminal commands. Mastery of Python. Learn Dockers. What would be your personal thoughts on which one requires you to learn more? Meaning requirements. Becoming a Web Developer I counted roughly, 16 things you need to learn and from what I learned so far roughly 5 things for DevOps, thank you for your video you cleared a lot of things which I didn't understand, thank you and sorry for the very long message.
Pretty close summarization. Don't forget that a software developer may work on non-web projects too. This could include mobile apps, backend services, desktop apps, and background apps that have no UI.
Check out the DevOps roadmap guide at devopsfordevelopers.io/roadmap for a list of topics to learn. This rabbit hole goes deep. For example, you need to learn the terminal commands like `top` to see CPU utilization. That shows you utilization and where the time is being spent by percentage, like idle time, wait time, and steal time. Now you've got to go figure out what each of those represents which takes you down the path of learning more about the Linux OS. There are a lot of other examples but hopefully, that illustrates that each topic in DevOps is a wrapper around a dozen or so other topics, that are a wrapper around...

I spent weeks thinking about this for the first case scenario full stack was the better for me but for the second case scenario i don't like UI designing that much so can i learn full stack development but focus more on the backend ? cuz i like coding and working with the database more than frontend and that would be also for freelancing

I hear ya: my UI skills peak at Times New Roman font on a white background 🤣
Fortunately, tools like TailwindUI.com take a lot of pressure off there. So yeah, I can definitely relate and there is tons of work to be done without doing UIs. IMO, you can still be "full stack" and not do a lot of UI work. It's like "yeah, I *can* do UI => I'm full stack but if there is someone on the team who enjoys it more, let's roll with that."
I think full stack dev is definitely future proof, and really- I think full stack is frontend + backend + devops. Someone who can code, build, and deploy is a powerful asset to any team. A great analogy is comparing it to Special Operations teams: on any given team, there are specialists but each specialist also knows enough about the other disciplines to get them out of trouble.

Hi mate, i m a newbie in developing world. If we compared front end and devops, which one is more comfortable and valuable to learn? I confuse about both, because in front end I have started learn JavaScript
Both are valuable. I recommend learning a bit about both and pursuing the one you enjoy most. You can be successful in either (or both if you want!)

There is a lot of overlap between the two, and in many places, there is no difference at all in the roles. Learn the fundamentals, apply for jobs, and repeat as necessary.
It's a long road with a lot of challenges. Remain persistent and disciplined. Stay focused on "what problem am I solving for a business" vs. "is this DevOps or Cloud Engineering". 🙌
I noticed that for software engineers, there's a ton of opportunity to start a small business and/or make money on the side (building websites etc).
Are there similar opportunities for DevOps guys, or is this career itself too much of a time consuming job like, say, piloting?
It's definitely not like piloting. I use Ctrl + z way too much! 🤣
There aren't as many opportunities as something like building a website. Most people know what a website is, and when they want one. It's a commodity. There are still quite a few opportunities for side jobs though. The trick is knowing how to identify them. It's rare for someone to say "I need some DevOps help...", but if you're paying attention you will hear people describing the symptoms that DevOps solutions address. Have been a devops intern for 6 months, but my soul still clings on to the software development field as i love data structures and algorithms, logic building and thought process that i have learnt and practiced during my college time(I am currently in my final semester). Currently i am thinking of working as a devops engineer as FTE for another 6 months(concentrating more on cloud tech which may also be a valuable skill in swe) and then shift my role as a swe...
Is this a right strategy for my career or am i just wasting 6 months of experience as a swe??
Also if i shifted my role, would my zero industrial experience as a swe downgrade my salary??

That's a tough question to answer, and I can only offer my opinion.
My first thought is if you enjoy SWE much more, why do DevOps at all? You tried it, discovered it isn't for you: move on.
Your time as an intern won't be wasted though: we will see DevOps move into SWE more and more and it's important for you to have those skills as you advance in your career.
Why not do both, and stand out in the crowd?

I have 2 years of experience as a Java Backend Developer, but I don't really enjoy coding. I struggle to think and find a solution for the problems. Is Devops a good option for me.
I'm not sure. You still have to solve problems in DevOps. Why do you think you struggle to find solutions?
@@DevOpsForDevelopers I can learn theoretical things easily, i have cracked java interview in 4 MNCs recently. But when it comes to coding, i find it difficult to think and find solutions. Should I practice more coding or should I switch to devops kinda role where much coding is not required.
I think (not financial advice 🤣) you should spend some time working on coding and problem-solving. You may find it handy to use open-source projects to look at how similar problems were solved, or research problem-solving skills in general. While DevOps is less coding than SWE, there is still a lot of problem-solving and creating solutions to unknown problems.

You can get started in either by learning 1 programming language. Over time, you'll probably learn multiple, but it's not a requirement
Can I become a devops engineer without an engineering degree?
Some companies require a degree, but most do not. Most job descriptions will say "degree OR equivalent experience". FWIW, I don't have a degree.
