Should you pursue a career as a software developer or become a DevOps engineer?
Neither.
At least not until you know enough about each career to make the answer painfully obvious. In this video, I'll share some tips on how to do just that.

Thanks for the helpful video addressing this issue.
You’re welcome!
Hi Will! Top content! So happy to have found this, had a wonderful time chatting with you the other day about IaC on the adventures in devops podcast (Omer). Cheers :)
OMER! Welcome!
Happy you found the channel and you're welcome to come back on the podcast at any time, there is so much more to talk about!
This is actually a great video.... I'm a DevOps Engineer and as a DevOps, I agree with what you're saying...
Right on, thank you for speaking up!
I love all your content and your Kubernetes videos have been a lifesaver!
Saweeeeet! Glad to hear it and thanks for the feedback!
Hey Will, im software engineer with 20+ years of experience trying to transition to SRE/DevOps. Im a big fan of your channel. Are you ever going to make any new videos again or is the channel DOA?
Video idea for you 💡.... chatgpt and how it will affect devop jobs or if it will and how soon!
Nice! Will get something up for you.
Hi Will! Thank you for all your amazing videos. They are highly informative. Off topic! I am about to be done with my DevOps Bootcamp. Though I still believe I have a lot to learn. Started with no IT background. I was advised to put 4-5yrs DevOps experience on my resume because entry level positions are hard to come by and nobody wants to hire anyone without an experience. I have been battling with what to do. Please can you give me an honest advice.
Never compromise your integrity.
Thank you Will. Truer words have never been spoken.
Great video... I'm a complete rookie so such start as a developer than move into DevOps? Or will I be ok starting at DevOps? I have zero experience in both
Do some tutorials or watch some intro videos on both. Pick whichever one resonates with you more and explore it further. You can always change your mind later.
can a devops carreer be taken of by ai , and ultimately devops gonaa unemlpyed
inn future
Businesses will always have problems. Solve those problems and you'll always find work.
Is it possible to have 2 remote DevOps position at the stay time working from home?
Depending on the job and the employers, sure!
@@DevOpsForDevelopers should I start as a developer and then make my way towards devops engineering? or can I become a devops engineer without going the full stack developer route?
@@DallasFort1857 there isn’t a perfect path. If you’re just starting your career, I recommend exploring both paths using YT videos and tutorials to see what you enjoy and what you don’t. From there, dig in deeper on your strengths and start formalizing a learning plan.
The more you learn, the clearer the path will become
1st , big fan
2nd. Same😄
Lol, thank you both! 🤣
Ideally, this is the case, but HRs often use your lack of experience in one specialty to lower your offer. Once you choose a path, you are set on it in the sense that switching will inevitably impact your salaries negatively. That is exactly what I am facing right now. Even if the switch entails no salary reduction, it feels like I wasted time that I could have spent on furthering my knowledge of one specialty.
You can overcome HR with good negotiation. Check out the book Never Split The Difference for some tips.
If the time spent in one area. tells you that isn't the right area for you, it wasn't time wasted.

what is the difference between a cloud engineer and a devops engineer??
It varies a lot from one company to the next. Each company has their own definition. For learning purposes, there is no difference. Treat them as the same.
@@DevOpsForDevelopers can a backend developer transition into cloud computing??
@@preetamkumar2184 yeah, absolutely! As a backend developer, you already know what needs to be built, why it needs to be built, and if it’s the right thing to build to actually solve the problem. The only skills you may need to refresh are networking, security, and building infrastructure with code.
With a programming background, I’d highly recommend Pulumi.
are you alright? you look like you lost weight
🤣🤣🤣 yeah, training for a race. Thanks for checking! 🙌
@@DevOpsForDevelopers what language do you recommend for devops, should I start learning golang or should I stick to python... As most of the cool devops tool are made using golang....?
@@avg_user-dd2yb golang is a solid choice. JavaScript is good too, not because it’s used in DevOps but because there is a 100% guarantee it will be used by the developers you support. If there is a specific industry you’re interested in, look at the job openings in that field and see if there is a common language used there.
@@DevOpsForDevelopers thanks❤
