Not just a violin, it's the entire Munich Philharmonic Orchestra!
It's guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow....Deep Purple's founding member (along with Jon Lord)..great stuff, keep it up!
Tony Carey on Keyboards
Ronnie James Dio sang in Black Sabbath after Ozzy Osbourne left. Rainbow has had several singers Dio was one of them. Dio as a solo artist was fantastic!
The first line, "High noon, oh I'd sell my soul for water", is an absolute killer
Most Rainbow albums have one song that's longer and intense like this. Some more choices: Gates of Babylon (also with Dio at lead vocals), Eyes of the World (Graham Bonnet on vocals)... there are others also, but please react to Gates of Babylon next. You won't be disappointed.
Rainbow isn't Dio's group, it is Ritchie Blackmore's group, he formed it after leaving Deep Purple. Dio was the first lead singer. After he left to join Black Sabbath, Graham Bonnett took his place. Joe Lynn Turner was the singer after Bonnett.
You said it dude this is mr’s Blackmore’s band.
Yet, listening to this you'd hardly know; Dio and Powell carry this (I hear synth, too). Is there a guitar in here? Never mind, I hear it finally at 5:45.
@@commentatron Ritchie is playing throughout the whole song..
@@commentatron I understand that many people don't have an ear for the guitar, regardless do the research and stay away from propaganda such as this was Dio's band. Dio had his own band which in his own words was the best band ever. I will not comment on his statement. RIP Dio.
@@zanatural Don't know about all that, just that when I was in a band in the seventies, Blackmore was an out-front sound presence in Deep Purple. As time went on he seemed to fade back in the mix and become less raw, less compelling. When my friends and I first heard Rainbow with Dio, it wasn't RB that impressed us most.
Listen mistreated from live in Munich, kill the king, tarot woman, catch the rainbow, gates of Babylon, man of the silver mountain, twenty sentury Greensleeves live from Munich.Raindow is one of the greatest band's you ever heard.cozy Powell on drums Richie Blackmore on guitar and dio is something special
Just wanted to add the cover for"still I am sad" live from the album Rainbow on stage, cheers :)
Next up for Rainbow you must please do ‘Man on the Silver Mountain’. The guitarist for Raibow is Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, the awesome drummer on this track is Cozy Powell, he used really big sticks and pounded the hell out of those drums.
True shame how Cozy Powell died
For me another epic song from Rainbow would be Gates of Babylon. I believe you will enjoy the experience. Peace out be safe
Just realized you didn't even talk about the lyrics, LOL. The song is written about a wizard who convinced a bunch of people that he could fly and take them to a star, if only they build him a tower from where to take off. The song is written from the perspective of one of the followers/slaves (the whips and chains indicate they were enslaved, but at the same time they believed in what he said). When the tower was finished and the wizard climbed on top of it, instead of taking off and flying he fell to the ground and died, much to the shock/amazement of his followers. Now freed, the narrator is trying to come to terms with what has happened and what to do with his life now (this is elaborated further in the follow-up A Light in the Black).
It's an allegory that you shouldn't waste your life helping self-denoted leaders to achieve impossible goals born out of hopeless delusions of grandeur; the most obvious example being religious cult leaders (of whom there were many in the 1970s), but it can be applied to other leaders or cult figures likewise.
the songwriting and storytelling in this song are just SO great, combined with the unbelievably talented musicians
Black Sabbath's 'Heaven and Hell' is a great album. I believe Dio said that 'Heaven and Hell' was the best song he wrote.
When Cozy left Stargazer became a pale imitation of itself. Then when Dio left, it died. One of the finest Progressive Anthems.
Dio left before Cozy, but I understand completely....not the same.
You are absolutely correct Adam, thanks for the wake up call.
Guitarist Richie Blackmore came from Deep purple. Deep purple did a tour with ELF opening. Blackmore decided to make a solo album with Dio on vocals. He later just turned the band in Rainbow. Dio would leave rainbow later for creative differences. which later turned out to be great timing because Black Sabbath just fired Ozzy. Deal would make two studio and one live album with Black Sabbath then start his solo band Dio. He returned to Black Sabbath twice. The second time they renamed the group Heaven and Hell after the first album they made. There he would stay until his passing from cancer in 2010. RIP DIO
Spot on.
I got to see that tour in November of 74! I'll admit I
hadn't heard of Elf, but what a gig! The next year I got to see Rainbows 1st tour! I saw Ronnie with Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath, and his 1st tour with Vivian Campbell. Very lucky indeed.
One of my top 10 all-time albums. Solid front to back. This is Blackmores group.🎸
Watch the 1977 concert where they play Still I’m Sad, the drum solo by Cozy Powell is mind blowing, saw them live in Sydney Australia in 1976 and best concert I’ve ever been to, blew me away
Tony Carey was Rainbow's original keyboardist. That's the sound you are hearing. Carey also had recorded solo music, and formed a band called "Planet P". It was later changed to "Planet P Project" stemming from a lawsuit, of another band with the same name...
Actually, Micky Lee Soule from Elf was their original keyboardist. Tony Carey first played on the 2nd album.
@@johnfoster5295 ~ Yes, you're correct. I forgot about him. I guess because I really enjoy Carey's music.
I read that DIO and Carey got along well together. But Blackmore and Carey, not so much. TC said Ronnie was like an uncle to him. Dio said that Richie tormented Tony...
@@Deborahtunes Yeah I heard Blackmore wasn't the easiest guy to get along with. But he is a brilliant guitarist.
@@johnfoster5295 ~ Yes that's true. Blackmore is good...
Man on the Silver Mountain and Temple of the King are two more amazing songs.
So, my friend, you are a big Deep Purple fan, so you need to understand the connection. "Elf" is the band that Dio was singing in while they were opening for Purple. When Richie Blackmore decided to leave Purple, he basically stole everyone from Elf and created Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. The two songs that you reacted to are on "Rising" (their second album) where he only kept Dio and replaced everyone else that used to be in Elf.
Check Dio on the stage: Don't talk to Strangers, live at Spectrum 86
I was there, as I remember it was Vivian Campbells birth day......great show!!
For me the best Rainbow line-up was this here. No question. Kick ass collaboration of supreme musicians. This tune really shows the range of these dudes. Lyrics are top notch.
Dio is italian for God .
So grateful to see young people enjoying Ronnies voice!!! Thank you for your reaction!!! The pinnacle of DIO's work.. (in my opinion) os the album MOB RULES!! Please anyone who reads this, GO FIND IT! TOTAL gift to the history of music. Sign Of The Southern Cross!!
He was also in the Band “ELF” before Rainbow
The first incarnation of Rainbow was in fact Elf with Blackmore on guitar. I feel bad for the guitarist of Elf. He got a raw deal on that one.
Rainbow 'Mistreated' live in Munich is just amazing. Good to see younger person appreciate just how great this entire group was.
This is MASTERPEACE !
The true majesty of a Blackmore composition ….. composed by Blackmore on cello and Dio has the opportunity to lend vocals and lyrics to this beast ….history shows Blackmore gave Dio the opportunity to finally discover his strength …
Rainbow is Ritchie Blackmore's (From Deep Purple) solo project from when he left in 1975. He picked up Dio from his band Elf which was the regular opening act of Deep Purple. Stargazer (released in 1976) is actually written as a punch at Led Zeppelin's Kashmir (from 1975) trying to one-up them.
Really recommend Gates of Babylon from Rainbow, it is another awesome majestic song.
Having exposed my Norwegian heritage, there is one explosive video you would have great interest in watching. Our most revered and famous classical composer was Edvard Grieg. In spite of his tiny stature - he was just 5 feet tall - he was famous at his time (1880s) for being a heavy, heavy rocker on the piano. This has prompted heavy rock groups of the 70s and 80s to cover his melodies. In 1995 Ritchie Blackmore and Rainbow did "In the hall of the mountain king". You should check it out. Its a live video.
You have (what I consider) listened to one of the most epic songs ever recorded. Ritchie, Ronnie, and Cozy are all beasts on this song. Rainbow has so many more great songs. HOWEVER, you still need to see Rainbow's version of Deep Purple's song "Mistreated" from the 1977 Munich live concert. Both Deep Purple and Ronnie's version are fantastic, but in different ways. A must watch for you.
You really listen with a musicians ear, and that is so satisfying and educational for me as this was the music of my youth. At my particular school, those of us who listened to this were considered burnouts by our classmates. It is so nice to see many young adults enjoying this type of music and understand how great these performers were.
.
My brutha! React to "Temple of the king"!!
Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore wrote that riff on a celo!
I would like to introduce another band to you. UFO is one of the best hard rock bands to come out of the UK. Period. Michael Schenker is a true guitar god. Start with Doctor Doctor.
@Zoey The Savannah My favorite band of all-time too. Story-telling, masterpiece instrumentals, Phil's soulful/emotional vocals ... there's nothing bad there at all.
I agree 100% except on the doctor doctor to start part. Start with Rock Bottom or Queen of the deep
@@georgetourlos5840 Ohhhhhh, I agree fully with Queen of the Deep. It's right up there with Crystal Light, Profession of Violence and Martian Landscape for me. I also won't ever disagree with either Rock Bottom or Doctor Doctor but still find the Wild, the Willing and the Innocent much more a banger than either. It's all a matter of style and taste I guess.
@@RedDawnRocker
Looooovvveeee Martian Landscapes
@@georgetourlos5840It's a stunningly gorgeous song. I probably listen more to Martian Landscape and Crystal Light than any other UFO tune. I've always loved how they can meld rock, blues and classical influences into such a gel-like soothing sound. Their lyrics never miss either ... pure storytelling and poetry every time.
When you listen to Stargazer, you have to listen to the rest of the story in A Light In The Black.
"Gates Of Babylon" is another great song by them
Gates of Babylon is another epic from Rainbow.
ELF 'Never More' nuff said.
Another great Rainbow song to check out is The Gates Of Babylon. And before Dio had his solo career, before Black Sabbath, and even before Rainbow, Dio was in a band called Elf, very southern rock like music with them.
FWIW, according to himself he adopted the name Dio in highschool after a mafia gangster named Johnny Dio, because he thought it was cool (his real name is Padavona). That was about the same time this highschool band started recording. Record company liked the name so he kept it. I think it first appeared on a record in 1960.
He did a number of singles and an LP with that band under different band names. Mostly doo-wop, rockabilly and rock'n'roll songs. They later reformed and named themselves Electric Elves, which changed to Elves and later Elf, playing more blues rock and hard rock. As Elf, they were discovered by Roger Glover and Ian Paice of Deep Purple, and became Deep Purple's regular opening act. They recorded three LPs, if I'm not mistaken. When Blackmore decided to leave Deep Purple, he basically took over Elf and became their lead guitarist. They named the band Rainbow. In subsequent years, Blackmore dismissed all former Elf members except for Dio. Dio left/was dismissed (depending on who you ask) in 1978, and shortly thereafter joined Black Sabbath.
As others have noted, you should definitely check out some live performances. Rainbow Live in Munich 1977 has some legendary performances, for example Mistreated, Kill the King, or Catch the Rainbow, to mention just a few. For his own band, Don't talk to Strangers live at the Philly has already been recommended; both versions 1984 or 1986 are good. (This is just for starters, there's much more worthy of checking out in later years, up until 2007-2009, shortly before he passed.)
Ronnie James Dio sang in Elf; Rainbow; Black Sabbath; Dio and Heaven and Hell, which was a group made of him him and the members of the Mk. II era of Black Sabbath (Dio, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Vinnie Appice). They were named after the first album Black Sabbath recorded with this line up. And , like somebody already said, Rainbow was Ritchie Blackmore's group, not Dio's. In fact, Rainbow is also called Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.
Dio probably comes from "Deo" the Latin word for "God"
It’s Blackmore’s group and Dio eventually got pushed out because Blackmore was tired of paying the bills out of his pocket and wanted to make Rainbow more commercial. Dio was always grateful that Blackmore gave him his big break.
Pretty much everything from the “On Stage” live Rainbow album is great. Definitely one of my very favorite albums from my teenage years, and still.
'Gates of Babylon', is another Rainbow song in a similar vein to this one but with an more Arabian influence.
Rainbow - Gates Of Babylon
Hi, Rainbow was Ritchie Blackmore's group (after he left Deep Purple). Dio was singer of Purple's support group ELF.
Cozy Powell used oversized drumsticks to make this monster sound.
I'm actually wearing my Rainbow Rising shirt right now!
Got to do "KILL THE KING " For a drummer lol Cozy Powell. RIP 🙏 TOP 4 DRUMMERS IN THE WORLD EASY. By the way side note Ritchie Blackmore wrote this song on a cello. When Dio sings " I see a 🌈 Rainbow rising " the keys comes in keys lyrics gives me chills to this day. Well done seem them in 1979 all singers in Rainbow loved it all criminally underrated band.
The two songs you have reacted to from this group are the first ones I've listened to that have dio as the singer. I'm familiar with the other two singers and Tony Carey's song "It's a Very Fine Day".
Great reaction. It moved you in the exact same way it does me. 🤘
It was cool hearing you describe your experience listening to that song Chod. I remember the first time I heard it. It blew me away as well. Such a well-crafted song, an amazing vocal performance and that guitar solo is one of the best I’ve ever heard.
The first person I ever saw on a rock stage live in person was Ronnie James Dio. He was in a band named Elf and they were opening for Deep Purple. On this tour the Deep Purple guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, got to know him and soon thereafter left Deep Purple to form Rainbow with Dio as the singer.
Epic song.....Dio, Blackmore and Powell....MAGIC!
You forgot to mention Dio's band, ELF.
You really need to hear their song NEVERMORE... most of the band was absorbed into the original lineup of Blackmore's Rainbow.
Great song .... my favorite is Wonderworld from Elf.
Rainbow
In the mid-1970s Dio's vocals caught the ear of Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who was planning on leaving them due to creative differences over the band's new direction. Blackmore invited Dio along with Gary Driscoll to record two songs in Tampa, Florida on December 12, 1974. Blackmore stated in 1983, "I left Deep Purple because I'd met up with Ronnie Dio, and he was so easy to work with. He was originally just going to do one track of a solo LP, but we ended up doing the whole LP in three weeks, which I was very excited about."[20] Being satisfied with the results, Blackmore decided to recruit more of Elf's musicians and form his own band, initially known as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. They released the self-titled debut album Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in early 1975. After that, Dio recorded two more studio albums (Rising and Long Live Rock 'n' Roll), the live album On Stage, and two archival live albums (Live in Munich 1977 and Live in Germany 1976) with Blackmore. During his tenure with Rainbow, Dio and Blackmore were the only constant members. Dio is credited on those albums for all lyrical authorship as well as collaboration with Blackmore on musical arrangement. Dio and Blackmore split, with Blackmore taking the band in a more commercial direction, with Graham Bonnet on vocals and the album Down to Earth.
Seen them twice at a small theater in Royal Oak, MI. Great performances.
Dio band(s) history - Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio (solo with his own band - Vivian Campbell, Jimmy Bain And Vinnie Appice), back to Sabbath, then finally Heaven and Hell (with former Sabbath Members Tony Iommi Geezer Butler, and Appice).
RIP RJD.......
Ritchie Blackmore would probably swat you with his stratocaster for saying that Rainbow is Dio's band!
light in the black is part 2 of Stargazer
The word you are looking for is EPIC
Stargazer does 'do something to you'. Hard to explain eh? 😁
Powel's killing it 🥁.
Dio joined Sabbath after it was already established with Ozzy.. some fans hated the change in vocal styles and instrumentation that changed to match Dios vocals, but over time his work in Sabbath has become legendary. It went from more bluesy rock to something more operatic. He was only there for a short while before leaving and forming his own band. In interviews Ronnie seems like a cool, down to earth guy.. when he talks about musicians he had a falling out with..like Ritchie Blackmore / Rainbow.. he does not hold back. He comes across as a guy who loved and respected his fans, but was a bit "difficult" to work with professionally.
Hard rocks greatest coda !
Great reaction, subbed. Sabbath was fronted by Ozzy Osborne, he went nuts and they brought in Dio. I agree with you this song checks all the boxes.
They are so good! Hands down.
Actually, Blackmore is the major force to respect in the 70's. There are several overlaps in bands from the 70's. You'll catch on eventualy.
This song is ultra-potent fantasy, like M83's Hell Riders.
Cozy Powell was briefly considered the replacement for John Bonham... too bad, because Cozy could have held his own in Led Zeppelin. I for one, would have loved to hear the result of that pairing...what a shame.
Hard to replace Bonham, but if anyone could it was Cozy. Seriously Cozy should be talked about when people discuss the best drummers.
Similar feel to : Uriah Heeps "Magician's Birthday"... top 10 guitar solo all time
Nothing special at that solo, also Heep were always Deep Purple wannabe.
Love this song!
Ritchie Blackmore is supreme.... It's his band... if you're a drummer you can't go past Deep Purple's Fireball opening... also Burn is superb too...
Blackmore is the best guitarist from the 60s and 70s. Others just did the same pentatonic bluesy things while he invented some new style of playing.
A Fantastic Album...
What a jam.
If you want to hear more great drumming by Cozy, check out
Whitesnake - Slow an' Easy
Dio was also in a band called Elf, before joining rainbow and before that he was a doo wop band.
MASTERPIECE. Blackmore and Dio are fire together
With your obvious love of seriously great vocalists, you need to check out Geoff Tate from Queensryche
Eyes Of a Stranger
Silent Lucidity (Studio or MTV Unplugged)
Walk In The Shadows
Queen Of The Reich
Resistance
He also had several lps with elf before rainbow actually rainbow first lp is elf plus blackmore it was going to be blackmore's first solo lp after he left deep purple so rainbow is blackmore s band dio just upsurp it . Rainbow eyes is another great song from rainbow. Elf had some good stuff to
Another rainbow song that's theatrical that you might like is gates of Babylon. Also Temple of the King.
Quality.
Ronnie Jamrs Dio again renember The Last in Line this was his band before Dio and what an epic it is.Totally flawless.I suggest another great track from Rainbow Gates of Babylon its a lovely Egyptian feel to it as well
If you love theatrical then you will most likely enjoy concept albums. Dio has a concept album 'Magica' which is worth a listen-through. Each song is part of an overall story (which, coincidentally, Dio narrates the actual story at the end of the album so you can piece together the songs and how they fir the overall narrative.) Definitely worth a listen while you are on your Dio journey.
Rainbow - Gates of Babylon.
Mr Cozy Powell 🥁
excellent
May be its sad to reveal, but several of the famous heavy rock groups in the 70s and 80s owe their existence to Ritchie Blackmore and Deep Purple. As the first highly technically accomplished rock guitarist to emerge from the late 60s and shape the heavy rock genre, leading into punk and heavy metal, Blackmore literally gave birth to other world famous artist, now being recognized as if they should have created their own career. Two to be mentioned are David Coverdale, creator and lead singer of Whitesnake, who - was it not for him being picked as new vocalist in Deep Purple in 1973 - still might have been singing in an amateur band in Redcar, U.K. The other is Ronnie James Dio, who went on to have a fantastic career after being extracted from obscurity in his group ELF in 1975. Blackmore hired the entire ELF, and after a while simply got rid of everybody except Dio. Surprisingly, Ronnie James was exceptionally hostile to Blackmore in a later interview, because of Blackmore's dominance in Rainbow - but that's what you would be, when you have been the pioneer super-guitarist to create what is today known as heavy rock - and the Rainbow was a concept long before Dio's entrance on the scene - see Deep Purple's concert at California Jam 1974. Rainbow, by the way, is the loudest band I have ever heard. I saw them in Norway in 1977, in a sports hall. Sitting in the amfi across the field, I could NOT recognize "Mistreated" other than by the words - the sound of the music was like sitting inside a liquid fuel rocket.
Surprisingly hostile? For an idea of how Blackmore's "dominance" in Rainbow went down, please refer to the interview section at www.rainbowfanclan. com. And I'm not even talking about Dio's interviews (who was comparatively polite) but other band members. The man was simply impossible to work with.
Well, if Dio didn't WANT to be a world class superstar through Ritchie Blackmore, making tons of money and become an icon in rock history, he didn't actually HAVE to. He could just have said "no" and continued to be the dominant force in ELF. There are a lot of artists who could have been world class superstars if they had been given a chance. Ronnie James Dio was, and I guess he grabbed it with both hands. I would have liked to see what he had become, if he didn't.
@@ozziesollien7160 Making tons of money, in Rainbow? Blackmore barely paid his musicians at all. Both Dio and Bonnet had to go through lengthy lawsuits before he finally paid them the money he owed. Sorry to burst the bubble; it's well documented that the man was a genius as a guitarist, and he was also an awful person to work with. For other nice stories, you can always ask Deep Purple. Like this: www.thehighwaystar. com/specials/CHoHW/story. html If dozens of people say the same thing, chances are there is some truth to it. Maybe you think being a genius gives somebody the right to treat everyone around them like a piece of shit. I disagree.
No money in Rainbow. In Dio. No bubble to be burst about Ritchie Blackmore - I've seen him since 1969 and read all I need to know about him. I just found it pointless of Ronnie James to criticize somebody, without whom you would still be just another singer. I cannot see how he would have made it to stardom and fame without Ritchie Blackmore. I followed music extremely closely in those days, and it was not a myriad of groups - and Ronnie came from a group I, for one, had never heard about. Can anybody tell me if any of the other members of ELF became world famous? If so, it escaped me. Now, as Clint Eastwood would have said: Enough of this.
@@ozziesollien7160 There weren't a myriad of groups, in the early 70s? Not sure if serious. If you've never heard about them, it's your problem. Glover and Paice discovered them at a studio audition, not Blackmore. They were Purple's support group on their 1974/75 world tours. Then Blackmore became Elf's guitarist and renamed them Rainbow. Thereafter he fired everyone else but Dio before they could become world famous. As for the "what would have been", pure speculation. Nobody knows.
Gates of Babylon next!
At 4:04, it seems simple enough, but if you try to do it, you'll see real quick, Dio is/was absolutely blessed.
Must watch video, remember ozzy was originally black sabbath singer not Dio
When I think of metal I think stargazer, the wizard and fairies Wear boots
DIO - Invisible
Try some Nightwish, they are a Finnish Symphonic metal band, right up your street!
You should check out the symphonic metal band Nightwish. Start with Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013. You will NOT be disappointed. The lead vocalist in my opinion is the best female singer in the world/universe! The band is absolutely unbelievable. I grew up listing to this Rainbow album back many years ago.
Without Ronnie James Dio there are no Stargazer, Gates of Babylon, Heaven And Hell, Holy Diver, and Heavy Metal.
I would bet that Ritchie would have still written the music but I wonder what they would sound like with different lyrics and a different singer. Although Dio was great, there are other great singers as well. Without Ritchie's music the songs wouldn't exist either.
You have to watch the live version from 77 I believe.
Great tune… story if you will…Stargazer first..Light into ..next!…Ritchie is best…Dio is Best…Cozy is just insane!
Check out neon knights Black Sabbath with Dio on vocals.
band maid is new band about five or six years old, if you like hard rock check them out
Dio is not his real last name I think It is Pavonne and the orc sound is the keyboard player
