    From Dio himself:
The song has been called a "morality tale", and its lyrics are written from the standpoint of a "slave in Egyptian times", according to lyricist Ronnie James Dio. They relate the story of the Wizard, an astronomer who becomes "obsessed with the idea of flying" and enslaves a vast army of people to build him a tower from which he can take off and fly. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, building the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains; /just to see him fly, too many died"). In the end, the wizard climbs to the top of the tower but, instead of flying, falls down and dies: "no sound as he falls instead of rising. / Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand". The next song, "A Light in the Black", continues the story of the people who have lost all purpose after the Wizard's death "until they see the Light in the Dark", according to Dio.

You have just heard, quite possibly, the best metal song ever written. Opinions may vary.. but to me this song is epic of the highest level. Few songs can touch this performance in my mind. We lost a great man when Dio passed away.

    @Vin & Sori :
Stargazer is a song about hubris. People toil away in terrible conditions for years, dying like flies.. to help the "wizard" fly (because they "believe"). The wizard could probably be a metaphor for anything from a cult leader, false prophet, etc etc... then he tries to fly, and gets splattered.. people's hope is crushed.. then in the followup song (a light in the black) shows the renewal of hope.

And since you did Rainbow you should also check out Deep Purple, I'd suggest Child in Time or Burn. Rainbow - Stargazer Lyrics: (via Google search "Rainbow Stargazer official lyrics")
High noon, oh I'd sell my soul for water
Nine years worth of breakin' my back
There's no sun in the shadow of the wizard
See how he glides, why he's lighter than air
    Oh I see his face!
    Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, is it far?
    When do we leave?
    I believe, yes, I believe
In the heat and the rain
    With whips and chains
    To see him fly
    So many die
We build a tower of stone
    With our flesh and bone
    Just to see him fly
    But don't know why
    Now where do we go?
Hot wind, moving fast across the desert
We feel that our time has arrived
The world spins, while we put his dream together
A tower of stone to take him straight to the sky
    Oh I see his face!
    Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, is it far?
    When do we leave?
    Hey, I believe, I believe
In the heat and the rain
    With whips and chains
    Just to see him fly
    Too many die
We build a tower of stone
    With our flesh and bone
    To see him fly
    But we don't know why
Ooh, now where do we go
All eyes see the figure of the wizard
As he climbs to the top of the world
No sound, as he falls instead of rising
Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand
    Oh I see his face!
    Where was your star?
Was it far, was it far
    When did we leave?
We believed, we believed, we believed
    In heat and rain
    With the whips and chains
    To see him fly
    So many died
We built a tower of stone
    With our flesh and bone
    To see him fly
    But why
    In all the rain
    With all the chains
    Did so many die
    Just to see him fly
Look at my flesh and bone
    Now, look, look, look, look,
Look at his tower of stone
    I see a rainbow rising
    Look there, on the horizon
And I'm coming home, I'm coming home, I'm coming home
    Time is standing still
    He gave back my will
    Ooh ooh ooh ooh
    Going home
    I'm going home
    My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
    But it's not home
    But it's not home
    Ooh
    Take me back
He gave me back my will
    Ooh ooh ooh ooh
    Going home
    I'm going home
    My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
    But it's not home
    But it's not home
    Ooh
Take me back, take me back

I gotta say, this is one of my favorite reactions, for so many reasons. A song that is a morality tale, argued through religious lenses, with a bunch of tension in the discussion. The back and forth is fascinating. The discussion hits the mark a bunch of times and then dances around it over and over. It's fun to see people working through a very good point, and hitting it from different directions.

The whole of this album Rising is set in a fantasy world so it was quite literally a wizard

  • @MonstersHDTV
    @MonstersHDTV Před 6 lety +5

Rainbow redefined Heavy Metal on 1976's 'Rising'. The long, epic track with symphonic influences starts with a short drum solo by the late great Cozy Powell, a "great drumming moment" frequently cited as an example of his skills. It features the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, a Vako Orchestron, and what Ritchie Blackmore called "a string thing all playing this half-Turkish Scale". Blackmore's solo, after the second verse, is in B Phrygian dominant scale, and is cited as "one of his best".
There are loose ties to religion with the lyric borrowing from the Old Testament (a big Rock'n Roll thing) of The Tower of Babel. The story of the Pharaoh enslaving all these people in order to build a tower to Heaven so he could confront the God of Moses. An interesting fact was the name for the tour for this album was the Tower of Babel World Tour 1976. The lyrics, taken literally, are about a wizard (the Pharaoh) who enslaves countless numbers of people (the Israelites) and makes them build a stone tower for him. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, as they build the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains") just so they can see him fly, which gives them hope. In the end, the wizard falls off the tower and dies ("no sound as he falls instead of rising. Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand."
The lyrics also have a covert meaning, which many people have interpreted as a warning not to believe in false idols or messiahs. It can also mean that one should not give up hope even in harsh circumstances.

You can also make a connection to the beginnings of the so-called wizards and the priesthood.
The song is called Stargazer. Stargazers had knowledge, that they then abused for power purposes at some point. (It is no coincidence that wizards often wear star cloaks) So the priesthood is not far away. I always think of the ziggurat pyramids when I hear that song. On top of one a priest who has raised himself to be a god.

From Wikipedia - Simon Magus - The apocryphal Acts of Peter gives a more elaborate tale of Simon Magus' death. Simon is performing magic in the Forum, and in order to prove himself to be a god, he levitates up into the air above the Forum. The apostle Peter prays to God to stop his flying, and he stops mid-air and falls into a place called "the Sacra Via" (meaning "Holy Way" in Latin), breaking his legs "in three parts". The previously non-hostile crowd then stones him. Now gravely injured, he had some people carry him on a bed at night from Rome to Ariccia, and was brought from there to Terracina to a person named Castor, who on accusations of sorcery was banished from Rome. The Acts then continue to say that he died "while being sorely cut by two physicians".[28]

The song is about a wizard who wants to reach the sky so he can jump off and fly and all the people in the village are enslaved to help build a tower that's high enough they work for 9 years "with whips and chains just to see him fly" through the rough environment and while they all hate working and doing all of this they really want to see this wizard fly they then finish the tower and wizard gets to the top and jumps only to plumment to his death and all the village people are then left with a feeling of acomplishment and joy that they no longer had to work but at the same time they feel sad and depressed because all of it went to waste and they never saw him fly

    • @kevinbocarde3948
      @kevinbocarde3948 Před 6 lety +3

I think you are missing the point of the end of the song. They actually believed in the wizard and had faith, then when he "falls instead of flying" they lose all faith but then "look on the horizon, I see a rainbow rising...time is standing still, giving me back my will..." The rainbow is the idea of the wizard transcending his mortal body, the rainbow being a spiritual symbol that the singer then finds his faith restored.

Good interpretations you both, but I will add to this that it also shows the world as we believe it with the values and what is real. All this suddenly falls, all the illusions, but a new world arises, a new system and we can relate that to today with our beliefs in the monetary system f.ex. When it falls then what? Then again it can also be understood on the personal psychological field. As our beliefs, or lives as we live it. Sometimes we live on lies of some kind, of convictions and beliefs. Even our identity or the relationship we have to our loved ones. Things can suddenly change if it was build on a lie and maybe we see how enchanged we have been and now we are free and can choose a new life

Vin I don't understand why you have a hard time believing that groups of people can have beliefs they feel strongly enough about to die for.
You even said that you'd be willing to die for your beliefs, so why wouldn't others be willing to do the same? Even if you believe that Christianity is the one true religion you have to at least acknowledge the other numerous religious that have existed/currently exist. Do you think that those people don't really believe in their religion, or that they wouldn't be willing to die for their belief?
