    You’ve stumbled upon one of the greatest songs ever, and the singer Ronnie James Dio is widely considered to be the greatest metal vocalist of all time. You should check out Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath when RJD took over for Ozzy Osbourne. Another great Rainbow tune is Gates of Babylon.

      As a metal fan, I agree. Dio is the greatest Metal vocalist of all time. So glad you mentioned my all-time favorite band, Black Sabbath. The 3 studio albums with Dio (Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, and Dehumanizer) created some of the greatest Sabbath tracks ever, and gave us many of Tony Iommi's greatest riffs and solos.
      The average metal fan commonly overlooks Dio-Sabbath, and even to this day, Ozzy-Sabbath remains more popular with the masses. But for the hardcore Sabbath enthusiasts, we appreciate the riffs on songs like "Country Girl", "Falling Off the Edge of the World", "Die Young", and "Master of Insanity", as well as the intricate & blazing solos in songs like "Wishing Well", "Lonely Is the Word", "Over and Over", and "Too Late".
      Dio brought out the BEST in Tony Iommi.

I wasn't the same for weeks afterwards. Nothing else I've heard even comes close to what Dio, Blackmoore and Rainbow stirred in my soul. This is a very special performance, and it's as good as it is possible to get. I pretty much had a mystical experience when I first listened to it. That's no exaggeration either! There's a lot more to this song than just a band and orchestra playing together, it seems to actually affect conciousness.

    We are all blessed to be able to experience such talent and artistry. It doesn't matter these songs fall into such and such a genre or style of music. Life is short. We are all just lucky to be able to experience it. And make no mistake - rock music is as legitmate a form of music as any classical or jazz form. in this case, with just 5 musicians, the song is as evocatiove and emotionally challening as any clasical piece. And the musical talents of the performers are the equal of any. The band is tight and focussed, every perfomer contribting to the overall sound. Ronnie James's talents are the equal of any singer while Ritchie's prowess on the guitar is now the stuff of legend. Like I said - we are all just so lucky to be able to live and experience such wonderous musical talent and expression. Long live rock and roll.

    Great reaction to an awesome piece of music. You correctly heard the ‘middle eastern’ tone to blackmores guitar as he was using the Phrygian scales & chord progressions, not widely used in typical western music.

    What you have discovered is the compositional strength of Blackmore, composed by Blackmore on the cello you hear the bombastic Strum and Drang of this style of Wagner composition and then there is the Blackmore Snake Charmer scale - "Blackmore was the first rock player to make extensive use of Aeolian minor, throwing in Middle Eastern flavored licks from what has become known as Blackmore's snake-charmer scale (a variation of the Hungarian Minor)."

    Ronnie James Dio was front man for Dio, Rainbow and some years with Black Sabbath. Try out Ronnie's band Dio - Maybe start with Last in Line or Holy Diver.

    Back in the days of tape cassettes in cars we wore the oxide clean off 'Long Live R&R'. 40 plus years ago now but I still play Dio, Rainbow, Sabbath and many more of Purple's offspring, every day.
    LOUD
    And the great strings backing is the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra - yet another Deep Purple trait.

    Back in the 80's there was a radio program called The Friday Rock Show introduced by Tommy Vance.... At the end of the year listeners were able to write in with their vote for the 40 top rock tracks of all time.... That list was nearly always the same for the Top 5 which looked like this:
    1 = Stairway to Heaven = Led Zeppelin
    2 = Stargazer = Rainbow
    3 = 2112 = Rush
    4 = Supper’s Ready = Genesis
    5 = Xanadu = Rush

    Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
    Deep Purple - Child in Time
    Rainbow - Stargazer and the follow up Light in the Black
    Absolute epics!
    Heard a story that after a concert by Rainbow in Europe that finished with Light in the Black, the local cops taped off Cozy Powell’s double bas drum kit and declared it a crime scene coz Cozy didn’t just play those drums, he murdered them!
