    "Artists back in the day used Aurotune".. if by back in the day you mean late 90s.. sure. That's when it was invented. This is mid 70s. No digital, all analog. You actually had to have natural talent. Dio was known for hitting these songs perfect in ONE TAKE. He was a god among singers.

    Autotune was introduced for vocal correction in 1997 and first made it big on Cher's Believe in 1998. Everything from before that was completely authentic with the exception of vocoders and talkboxes. In terms of effects, everything else from these days were either Dynamics Processors or Time-based Processors. The former are things like EQ, Compressors, and Gates, and the latter are things like Reverb, Flanger, Chorus, and Delay. Dynamics processors don't feature any kind of masking for poor vocal quality. Time-Based processors do, but to a subtle extent. Any kind of overdubbing of vocals is likely to benefit the sound because multiple soundwaves together help texturise the sound and hide any flaws under layers of retakes. This is most evident with harmonisers and chorus effects, as well as normal overdubbing.
    What separates Autotune from these effects of the past is the reliance on Digital modification. There is no Analog sound corrector that works to the extent of Autotune. Talkboxes and Vocoders both require talent of the controller whom is usually the artist in question and are quite obviously used for effect. There is no question as to if the singer is using them or not. It's plainly there and they aren't hiding it because it sounds cool. Autotune, however, is completely computer generated apart from the initial threshold, attack and release settings. Lower thresholds allows for more subtle and undetectable pitch correction which is morally deceiving and ultimately pointless. Higher thresholds are more obvious robotic effect and may be interpreted by the listener however they feel. Autotune being strictly used for hiding bad singing is shameful. Why else should the artist be famous if all they do is sing and they can't sing good? I'm of course not referring to every singer who uses Autotune, but a good portion of modern Pop stars who don't write or play their music and only sing subpar to crappy vocals that are corrected by a computer. Does such a singer deserve their fame?

      I think this heavy use of autotune ended up making us becoming a little cynical when we hear something good.

    • @thmp3r
      @thmp3r Před 3 lety +4

      Since you mention harmonizers, you may be interested to know that they were used for vocal pitch correction back in the 80’s. You would have to turn a screw in the back of the rack unit for the exact pitch you wanted and print to an adjacent track on tape. Paula Abdul was famously the biggest use of this by her producers because she was terrible. The process took forever. As such with “quantizing” Lars on the Black Album - when the tape of drums played, the edits nearly sounded like a baseball card in spokes of a bike. But your point of the artist needing to just be better back then, stands.

      @TheBlackQueen Před 3 lety +2

      @@thmp3r Hmm, interesting. The only common Harmoniser from the 20th Century that I can think of is the H3000 which was mostly used for processed vocal doubling in replacement of actual overdubs. This practice is news to me. I'll look into it!

    The grandfathers of symphonic metal. Ronnie James Dio, the singer, didn't use autotune or fancy tricks. His live performances are even more epic. Ritchie Blackmore, the guitarist whose band this is, is one of the most influential rock/metal guitarists to ever live. The band Rainbow or Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, though has had many iterations throughout the years. They changed singers several times and thus changed their style several times. After Dio and the symphonic musical years came Graham Bonnet who had a more gruff voice and the music went more pop rock, later came Joe Lynn Turner and the sound changed to a more mellow rock. You should check out those versions of Rainbow. Try Since You Been Gone w/Bonnet, and Stone Cold w/Turner as singers. See the difference.

    "This guy" is Ronnie James Dio, the greatest singer in the history of heavy metal...not "most talented," but "greatest."
    Here is a brief history lesson, to place this band in the proper historical context.
    Dio (RIP) had been around since the 50's, in a variety of genres. He eventually was the singer in an American band named Elf. Meanwhile, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was busy tearing it up in Deep Purple. At some point, Blackmore left Deep Purple with the intention of forming a band with an even heavier sound. Former Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover had produced one of Elf's albums, and to make a long story a bit shorter, Blackmore replaced Elf's guitarist and formed Rainbow using most of the musicians from Elf. Blackmore and Dio recorded several albums as Rainbow using a constantly revolving list of musicians, until Dio himself left the band to replace Ozzy in Black Sabbath starting with the "Heaven and Hell" album (Blackmore would replace Dio and continue with a few different singers before disbanding Rainbow and reforming Deep Purple).
    The drummer was Cozy Powell (RIP), a fantastically skilled drummer who played with a number of bands including Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, and many others.
    Hope this was useful,
    God bless!!

    🦋 Ronnie James Dio HellYES!!! "We're off to the witch, We may never, never, never, come home
    But the magic that we'll feel Is worth the lifetime"🤘🤘 Time to Rock!
    Rainbow formed in Hertford, United Kingdom (1974)
    "Stargazer" is the fifth track from Rainbow's 1976 album Rising. And In knowing this. The year I was born in 76' Was a great time for iconic Music from a lot of Awesome bands.
    BTW guys auto tune was brought to light in the 90's. Back in the 70's it was Raw Natural Talent that made the band or artist! And Dio proved his worth with Every ♪ Note!

    What you just heard was our beloved demonic elf, Ronnie James Dio! Metal singer extraordinaire!! His small stature belied his absolutely booming, almost operatic, wailing voice! Match that with the insane guitar wizardry of Richie Blackmore (of Deep Purple infamy), Cozy Powell (too many references to mention - he's a drumming god!), Tony Carey on keys and Jimmy Bain on bass, and you have RAINBOW!
    This song is EPICness personified. From the beginning drum fill, to Richie's almost middle eastern tinged guitars to RDJ's voice - there is nothing like it!
    And please don't even go there with autotune - first off - it didn't exist in '76, any flaw was there for the world to see, so you had to be good - and Dio was one of THE best! RIP RDJ!

    Dio is fantastic. Had the honor of seeing him in concert with Scorpions and Deep Purple so he, of course, sang this song as well as the songs from Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell album and his own solo work. For such a small guy he had a powerful wonderful voice. He was also an incredible songwriter. There are other Rainbow songs though that you could check out if you wish. "Gates Of Babylon", "Jealous Lover" and "Street Of Dreams" are some good ones. 😎👍

  • @franciscojosejimenezmanzan1211

    Great reaction. Phasers on drums were used a lot during the 70's. Auto tune hasn't been around for that long. Bands like Queen, The Sweet and many others used techniques to build harmonies and manipulate pitch (speed up the tape, etc) But Dio, like Gillan, Coverdale, Hughes and the rest of that breed, never used any kind of manipulation on their vocals as far as I know.

    Welcome to mid seventies progressive hard rock by Rainbow. The guitarist name is Ritchie Blackmore who played with Deep Purple & vocalist Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P.) who went on to play with Black Sabbath and Dio. The drummer Cozy Powell (R.I.P.) was a beast and played with many bands including ELP.

      I think its more sad really. About how gullible and cruel humanity can be. They spent a decade dying in the heat building a stone tower for this all-powerful wizard, only to find out that he was full of shit. I think its a testament to how powerful humanity can be when everyone is determined to do something, but also how foolish we can be as well. Sounds a lot like a reference to the pyramids
