- I got quite the shock when I learned just how many bands Ronnie James Dio sang with! After hearing him myself, I can understand why. Today we're listening to him in the band Rainbow, as they perform the masterpiece of a song that is Stargazer.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I have songs like that also. We were blessed to be among those who had the chances to see gifted musicians, poets and story tellers of the rock era like Mister R.J. Dio! Damn I envy me for all those concerts I went to for so cheap.... and free. I do love Dio.

Dio is one of the most gifted vocalists that ever lived, and he kept up his gift through his life.
Yes Sir, his longevity was a testament to his vocal production techniques. and to have no formal training and sing and emote as he did was nothing short of mastery.

No formal training, his breath support was credited by Dio to his learning to play the trumpet as young man. The guy is a Vocal Deity! This track and The Last In Line live are some of the best examples of RJD's God Like vocals. And you gotta love how Blackmore, the guitar player for Rainbow and Deep Purple doesn't use the typical pentatonic scales and settles into these cool chromatic scales with an Eastern vibe.
Absolutely, other vocalists at that time had voices, Ronnie had an instrument. one other song I would add is Sign Of the Southern Cross from the Black Sabbath album Mob Rules album. Cheers Sir

Dio, Blackmore, Powell... Simply magic! One of the great tracks on one of the great albums. With this and Rush's 2112 coming out within a month or two of each other, 1976 was one hell of a year!

Rainbow added a photo of the crowd at a RUSH concert inside the Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll album. Caption is “greatest band in the galaxy“ or something like that but and it cracks me up every time

So the guitarist is Ritchie Blackmore and he used to be in deep purple which was classic rock. He is into medieval stuff and fantasy themes so he ended up starting a metal band called rainbow. He’s using a harmonic minor scale here which was a departure from the bluesy guitar in rock music. I think people seem to not really understand that Ritchie Blackmore is much more foundational to the genre of metal than lots of more popular metal “adjacent” groups like Led Zeppelin. Ritchie came from the same London scene as the classic rock guys but imo he set himself apart the most artistically and went to influence metal guitar playing more than guys like page or Clapton

Every great song from Deep Purple and Rainbow has Richie's signature, which can't be said for any other member of the respective bands. Thru to their existence, both bands have often changed personnel and they may have an influence on the songs they made but RB is always at the center of the songs. Let's face it, since RB left DP, they've never produced another real big hit, while RB will produce a great song with every band he's at. So yes, all respect and recognition for the talent of RB!

Ritchie Blackmore is indeed talented. But it's worth pointing out that Rainbow really started to suck after Dio left. And he had the nerve to claim that Dio wasn't pulling his weight in the band.
@@turdferguson2526yes and no. He wanted rainbow too be more commercial and I didn't like a lot of their later work but both joe Lynn Turner and bonnett were fine vocalists in their own right. It's just that they sounded more like foreigner at times. But interestingly JLT released a album.called belly of the beast. It will surprise you. Very hard and heavy plus his vocals are amazing, even now

Dio is on everybody's short list of greatest metal singers of all time. He was also a genuinely nice, generous, down to earth guy. And the man who brought "throwing up the horns" to metal culture. I'd recommend "Heaven and Hell" with Black Sabbath next.

"Rainbow- temple of the king" a calm song where you can appreciate the vocals
Considering he had NO formal vocal training and was 100% self-taught, Dio is even more amazing. I love the dramatic way he acts out whatever he sings. He died in 2010 and I regret only having discovered him years after his death.
Saw him in Toronto and it was so awakening had to book off work and see him in Hamilton a few days later. Most ppl consider Ozzy true Black Sabbath because he was founding member but I prefer Dio. Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath, and solo all amazing.

It's funny, when 'we' (my peers, and I) were listening to Dio, and his ilk, growing up we were labelled 'headbangers', as if we wouldn't know talent if it slapped us in the face.
Fast forward to the 2020s and knowledgeable CZcamsrs are telling us how phenomenally talented singers like Dio are/were.

I was told that for years. These guys were talentless clowns. 30 years later everyone is like man these people were pioneers. Their music has stood the test of time while pop people from the 80's are long forgotten.
My son told me I was very fortunate to grow up in the golden age of music.
'Children of the Sea' performed in 1983 is a vocal masterpiece!
It's good, but nothing tops his work in Rainbow.

Probably from a pure clean singing voice, his work with Roger Glover on butterfly ball lp and the ballet Rainbow eyes on long live rock and roll he shines to the heavens. But those are not well-known pieces of music.

I believe this is one the best songs ever. Been listening to this for around 40 years and gives me the shivers every single time.
I hear you....this is my all time favourite track and has been ever since this album came out. Nothing else comes even close. The second part to this story (A light in the black) is also pretty epic.
This is a guy who was 5'4, sometimes called The Elf, and pretty sleight of build but sang like he was a 7 foot warrior on top of a mountaintop. People really often underestimate just what a loss it was to not have Dio with us anymore. His work with both Black Sabbath and his own band Dio is worth diving into as well. Last In Line, Children of the Sea, Neon Knights, Mob Rules, and Heaven & Hell are some fantastic tracks that show off his godly talent.
Dio’s adlib at the ending of the song is one of the greatest rock vocalist performances I’ve heard. Tone, phrasing, emotion. Got it all.
Stargazer is only one example of Ronnie James Dio's talent as a Vocalist. He was a true showman and had a wonderful gift. He is sadly missed. 🤘 🌈
Dio's vocals are of course amazing but also Blackmore's solo is just epic. Let us not also forget how great Powell is on the drums.

@@tuffs4it Cozy Powell on drums is another master class, I read once he played sticks so thick they had to be custom made, like broom handles it was said, dude always played his drums to the floor, must have chopped hundreds of cymbals and drum heads to death!
Dio was pushing 36 here, he even sounded great when he was dying(he performed with stage 4 stomach cancer with out knowing it) Falling off the edge of the world is one of his best songs with sabbath, he had some range his black sabbath stuff really shows off his talents.
Live Evil is one of my ‘stranded on a desert island’ albums, top 3 of all time in my book.

Sadly, Dio is largely forgotten these days. He was the uncontested GOD of rock singers and I haven't heard anyone even close to him in range, power, and passion.

Cozy Powell's drum intro & Ronnie's vocals on "Stargazer" ....Scott Travis's drum intro & Rob Halford's vocals on "Painkiller".
Two Metal Gods on vocals & two bloody awesome drummers. Absolutely the pinnacle, the apex, the very very best of the hard rock/heavy metal genres.
Nothing else comes close to these two absolute masterclasses.
The part I love the most about this song, is the way Dio uses tone and inflection during the choruses to convey the changing mood/belief of the singer. Since the song is being told from the viewpoint of one of the slave/worshippers of the wizard, it starts out sounding VERY devout, completely on board. You can hear it when he says "Where is your star? is it far?" and then followed with "I believe" Also when he sings about "we built the tower of stone, with our flesh and bone" He sounds certain, proud, confident in his faith. Then the 2nd time he sings it, he adds the bit about "too many died", and his voice sounds more anguished, and conflicted, as he sings about how "they built the tower of stone, with our flesh and bone" the 2nd time, it sounds more like someone in doubt. Having seen all the people around him dying in the heat of the desert. When he asks "where is your star? is it far?" It sounds more pleading, hoping to find the end of their ordeal and labor. Then the final repeat of it, after the wizard has fallen, and he's literally standing over his body, he sounds condescending, dismissive. He has been freed from his delusions of the wizard. And now when he sings "Where WAS your star?" It sounds more mocking, like someone finally standing up to a bully after years of submission. And then the tone of his voice become triumphant and free, as he sings about how they are LEAVING. About how he's going home, and you even hear his voice fading in the mix, like he's walking away from the listener at that very moment.
Just such AMAZING storytelling with his voice, and how he structures the song. Fantastic.

Also those first few "I'm coming home" like he can't quite believe it and has to repeat it a few times with increasing certainty, yelling it out loud as it sinks in that he's finally free.
In all the years of music, only a handful I would consider a masterpiece. This is one of them.

The great thing about all these vocalist reacting to DIO for the first time is the look on their face....it's price less, like a shocked/stunned look.

Good to see you reacting to Dio's singing. I'd suggest "Gates of Babylon" for another Rainbow song, especially if you liked where the guitar playing was going. E Phrygian Dominant for that song and the solo will leave you guessing how in the world they are going to get back to that key and mode.

In my opinion the greatest singer of all time. I have seen him 3 times and his singing was insanely amazing! I met him back in 1998 after the first time I saw him , and he was such an awesome guy. To this day the friendliest musician I have ever met. Next Rainbow song you should react to is Gates Of Babylon. It is another MASTERPIECE!

What amazes me the most - and there’s so many things to be amazed by - is how in lock, how perfect Dio is expressing everything with the lyrics. The same parts sung in the beginning and later on, when he says “so many died” opposed to “TOO many died”, it’s absurd. He makes you feel the dispair and anger all along with him. Gotta love him.

Black Sabbath might've invented the Heavy Metal genre. But Ronnie James was the very embodiment of Heavy Metal, in past present and future. Those of us that had the pleasure to see him on stage are truly blessed.

The virtuosity of this band is off the charts! Like Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" a year earlier, this song is based heavily on Middle Eastern chord/scale progressions. Dio is arguably one of the top 5 greatest rock singers of all time....top 1 to 3, depending on personal preferences. He actually began his career to about 1957-58 as a doo-wop singer, changing his singing styles through the 1960's with heavy psychedelic/progressive genres, and hard blues rock of the early 70's...all culminating into his heavy metal godlike vocalities of the late-70's and 1980's! Ronnie James Dio is forever in the highest of places in the pantheon of rock singers!
Congratulations. You've found the G.O.A.T. Ronnie was the greatest singer, lyricist, frontman ever. He could tell incredible stories with just a handful of words. One of his passions from an early age was reading. He was recording at the age of 15 back in the 1950's. He was so talented he was invited to tour Sweden the summer between his junior year and senior year of high school. His first recording band was Ronnie and the red caps. I was lucky enough to have seen him twice in the days when this video was recorded in the mid 1970'. He liked to write about the struggle between good and evil and the days of knights and kings. His recording career spanned 52 years. He is the person who brought the hand gesture that all rock and rollers use 🤘. Cozy Powell was also a legendary drummer who played with many bands. his last hit before he passed away from cancer was also an incredible song "The Devil cried". He had too many hits to list \mXm/ Last fall there was a documentary that was released nationally in theaters. You can still find it on Showtime, it was called "Dio: Dreamers never die"
One thing that people don't realize, when they hear this song, is the stamina. It's all in, from the guitar solo, and it only intensifies all the way to the end. I don't know if he could have continued for half an hour more, but that's what this song actually deserves. It's like no other song in rock or metal history. Simply sensational!
And the fact, that Cozy Powell, Ritchie Blackmore and Dio happened to get together - in that tiny spot of time in the Universe - with all that talent, is something we'll never see again. Funny thing today, the kids are loving it!

I'm 63 and I've seen just about every metal or hard rock band that ever toured the US in the 70s and 80s but when it comes to DIO rainbow 4 times sabbath 8 times solo DIO never missed a tour from beginning to the last time I saw saw him playing in a bar in Springfield or while on vacation in like 2000 it was a great run RIP RONNIE

I have watched other react to RJD and they understand why metal/hard rock fans are so devoted to our music. These bands could, IMO, easily play anything and pull if off perfectly. With Dio, you get basically vocal perfection coming from, what I have read and what I experienced in shows I have attended, just a great person. He can sing like no other. I could suggest songs like gates of babylon, his Sabbath stuff, onto his solo music; this is a deep but wonderful hole to go down. Then sprinkle in Richie Blackmore's incredible modal guitar playing and you get the greatness of Rainbow. A band that is one of my top 10s but never seemed to get as big as they should have, and just now people are recognizing how great they were.

Saw them 1977 in Berlin with that tour. `Stargazer` was my funeral song in 1977 and it still is now at the age of 62.

Rainbow aren't even in my top ten bands but man some of their best stuff like this still brings up the hairs on the back of my neck even after many decades.
Listen to more Rainbow and they might crack your top 10. They sit in the top 3 for me.

The amount of classic songs with Dio is endless...if you want to stay with Rainbow for a while then I'd do Gates of Babylon next...for the softer side of his voice Catch the Rainbow is absolutely incredible. Temple of the King is another great song...you can get lost in Rainbow for quite a while...then comes Black Sabbath. If you want to go further back...before Rainbow was Elf...and there are some vocal gems there as well. If that's not far enough back then you can check out his doo wap stuff as a teenager...Ronnie and the Redcaps and then Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. They are vinyl singles...but they are on CZcams as well. Enjoy!!

Stargazer is one of the most epic compositions ever written and preformed. Rainbow was the beginning of a super group and 40 years later they are still one my favorite groups with the Ronnie James Dio era being the most special. I always point to the Rainbow 1977 Munich concert if you want to see them at their best. From that concert, the songs "Mistreated" and "Catch the Rainbow" are just magical. Especially Ronnie's vocals on "Mistreat", to me his best performance ever.
The man, the myth, the legend. One whose voice I didn't nearly appreciate enough until these reaction channels were invented. I probably first noticed his song 'Last In Line' by Dio(the name of his solo band), when the local classic rock station was playing it in the 90's, when I started listening to classic rock. When Dio died in 2010, I started listening to more of him.
On the topic of Marvel Movies... no Rainbow, but the Dio song 'Rainbow In The Dark' did put in an appearance on 'Thor: Love & Thunder'.
Yep, one of the best metal vocalists ever. He has sooo much great material to go through, in Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own band Dio.
The solo sounfs middle-eastern/Arabic. Dio was so epic...saw him live three times!
I love how passionate you are. Literally, you started by mentioning the drum intro..then you went up to the amazing Blackmore's solo. I'm just glad living in this planet amongst people with the same passion and drive for music. I'm not even a vocalist, i'm a guitarist but i could observe all day and night other musicians mastering their instruments in any kind of music. I watch drum reactions, vocal reactions, production and mix reactions etc.. I'm a metalhead originally but i end up in tears every time i watch Dimash sing. Stargazer's outro, the same..almost every time. Some of my friends don't get it, even my gf sometimes when she sees me tearing up and getting the chills, but hey..i'd chose this every day instead of being an unemotional person who finds music just casual or/and a past time habbit. Cheers, keep up the great job.

Saw him with Rainbow and twice with Black Sabbath. He absolutely commanded an audience with his voice and stage presence!! Just spectacular live. Suggest Children Of The Sea.

I also saw him once with Rainbow and twice with Sabbath. I also was fortunate to do a UK tour with him as his opening act for his Dio band in 1990. He had his voice to the end and I became a fan in 1975 with the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow album.Doesn't surprise me that a vocal teacher admires what he does.

Watch Rainbow perform the song Mistreated live in 1977. Dio's performance is stunning, one of the best live vocals I've heard, with superb tone, range, power, feel - has evirything I live, and the note he belts out as the band comes back in after the guitar solo gives me goosebumps.

Great song, but honestly, from the '77 Live in Munich album, I prefer "Catch the Rainbow".
The song was more suited for Coverdale and Hughes but he made it his own somehow and it was Absolutely stunning and original. Just like that. I love both versions though

I already hear the Stargazer 3 times in a row (singing every time with Dio 🤣 now that is none at home and cannot suffer of my singing voice) and now I wanted to see your video about hearing for the first time Dio.I singing again,for 4th time.His voice is something that touching your soul.I was not even born when "Rainbow" created and learned for Dio after my 25 y.o. Rainbow is my favorite band.Βlackmore,Dio etc of the group created perfect music that is amazing how "catch" the souls of people and at our 21th century.

Catch the Rainbow and Stargazer have a very special meaning to me, I get teary eyed when I finish singing the whole thing. There has been no other songs giving me such feeling without them being like a sad song. I feel like whenever I see a picture of a loved one that passed away and fond memories flood in, but that loved one is Ronnie. I didn't even get to know him.
Such is the magic of music, especially when performed by masters such as Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore.
This also happens to me with Dance of Death by Iron Maiden, the solos always get me and then that last line❤

I saw Rainbow with Ronnie in 1977. Its burned in my memory. He had such an incredible voice and charisma. RIP Ronnie.
One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest vocalists from one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
He was a vocal god. No one even comes close. This is probably one of his best performances, ever. This is as you thought, a compilation of live visuals, edited with the studio version. Don’t worry, though, he could easily and faultlessly sing the same lines live. So many other songs he sings are astounding. Maybe try the Gates of Babylon if you want to stick to his Rainbow era. Interestingly, he started singing in like do-wop bands, and then a more Blues rock band, so you might want to check out his work with Ronnie and the Red Caps/Prophets ( like What I’d Say), or The Elves (West Virginia), or even Elf (Wonderworld, which is actually wonderful).
RJD was without a doubt one of the greatest singers to ever front a rock band. His voice is instantly recognised and seems to drag you in and actually listen to the lyrics of most of his songs. I recommend you listen "Lonely is the word" from when he was with Black Sabbath......an amazing blues twist for both him and the band.

Ronnie James Dio was such a talent and I still feel his loss. I bought all the records he appeared on and saw him live a number of times, although sadly never with Rainbow. This song is one of my favourites and still gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. This was a lovely respectful reaction video. I enjoyed it very much.

Hey, from Melbourne here too. Saw Dio live at Festival Hall. Vivian Campbell had left the band by then, and Craig Goldie was on guitar which was a shame, BUT the concert was freakin' brilliant.

Love this song. R.I.P. Ronnie. I had the honor of seeing him in concert a few times and it was amazing. Great voice and stage presence. There is a documentary that just came out last year. You should definitely check it out. Thanks for doing this song and hope to see more from Diol
A good choice,Rainbow was one of my favorite bands from the 70s.I bought their records when I had some money to spare.I was a teenager at the time, and liked a lot of bands back then, so it cost a lot of money to buy all the LPs back then .Another good song by Rainbow is from their first record that came out in 1975. It's called "Man On The Silver Mountain" the talented guitarist is Ritchie Blackmore. Became very famous later with other bands. Thanks for your reactions. Greetings from Sweden
Stargazer is perfect, everything about this song is perfection. Been a Dio fan for some 25 years, THIS song has remained one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time, it was also one of the only songs to ever bring legitimate tears to my eyes (still does to this day). Dio's vocals are overflowing with an endless supply of passion and emotion, and the band adds such the perfect epicness to not even match his vocals, they almost enrobe his voice like a fucking velvet coat of dreams.
Definitely check out more Dio. He crushes everything he sang and always gives 100% to his fans every performance. if you liked rainbow as a band you should check out the band deep purple it was found by the same guitarist Richie Blackmore. They had another absolute beast of a singer Ian Gillan.

Just an absolute classic Rainbow track... the band was just in perfect form in this era... so glad to see RJD and the others get the respect they deserve for the musical brilliance... RJD is such a great storyteller... why this track and others are so re-listenable over the decades, you continue to hear new things...
Dio was famously a real nice, down to earth guy. So many people have stories of meeting and burning a joint with him he probably made a rule of always keeping a roach behind his ear just in case he met a fan.
Absolutely!!! Sat with him for hours talking and signing autographs after the show still have 24”x36” photo of him and my best friends after the show!! He was one of kind!!! ❤
Always remember Rainbow was Blackmore’s band after he quit Purple and the music written and arranged to fulfil his vision and he plucked Dio from relative obscurity in order to achieve that - back in the day when he formed the band Blackmore was the draw - everyone else a hired hand - Rainbow’s success carried on long after Dio left because of the music not just the voice
They actually had greater commercial success after Dio left, but, to his credit, Ronnie refused to make cookie-cutter, boy-loses-girl garbage for radio play and his legacy is all the stronger for it. R.I.P to The King of Metal, Ronnie James Dio.
I prefer to think of it as Dio outgrew the limitations that being in Rainbow placed upon him. Each member was/is great in their own way.. but the genre in general benefitted from the way things transpired thereafter.
Personally, I think anyone who tries to get Ronnie James Dio to be just another pop singer is misguided at best and downright stupid at worst. Do you think Blackmore holds the JLT Rainbow albums in higher esteem these days than the three with Dio? Highly doubtful.

You really should react to Dio singing live, especially in the 70´s and 80´s, he was a truly awesome live performer. The live show with Rainbow from Munich 1977 is great, songs like "Catch the rainbow" and "Kill the king" comes to mind but all of the songs are great.
