Listen to his two Romances albums, beautiful Mexican ballads. If you look up and get the English translation of the songs, you can see what he's singing about. He's my absolute favorite singer, I'm Mexican American, and yes, I speak/understand Spanish. The songs are just beautiful and wonderful to sing as you relax at home, or driving. He's my go-to artist. He has some upbeat Mexican folk songs too which are nice. I don't care for his pop 90s sounding upbeat songs though. He's a balladeer and that's where he should stay IMO. Glad you were introduced to one of the greatest Mexican artists, many outside of Latin America don't know him, but he's huge in Latin America.

This is so similar to overtone or polyphonic singing; so much so that I think it’s exactly that. Singing a base note with a whistle note. There is an amazing overtone singer whose name escapes me but you can find her on CZcams. Most people can learn at least some basics of overtone singing by singing and holding a chest base tone while speaking “weeee” and “youuuuu” very slowly to get the whistle notes. Actually controlling it is much more difficult, of course. Beautiful and brilliant!

In her 70's, my Mom took to playing this song alot, even sitting on porch with the acoustic. She was "talking", but no one noticed. As time went on, the places at the table emptied, never to be refilled. Different people moved around her, and lived as if she wasn't there. Parked in her yard without a care, etc. When she passed, it was on her front porch, and still no one saw her, for days, until the postal guy following Monday. Several years later, finding myself "the last one" left, I understand.

The fact that you get so emotional even when you don't speak Spanish shows the power of the song. I dont like his songs or voice, it's just not my taste, but it is part of Latinamercan pop culture. From Chile to Mexico, we all latinos somehow identify us with that song in some way.

Another thing you will learn about Tool is that Danny Carey is one of the greatest drummer in the planet. He thrives on odd timing. He is just amazing to watch his drumming. That’s what makes this band. They all bring such a big piece to make one. There could never be any substitutions. Or there would be No Tool. Again, you should start from their first album and get to this. It’s been a progression. It’s all quite different. And I will advise this should be at a very good volume and on a good system. It engulfs you fully. Enjoy ❀

Well I’m glad that you have found this band. This is my second ah-ha moment band. I first heard them on college radio out of Nashville in 91. Been a fan ever since. I have had the pleasure of seeing them live about 6 times now. This was them on the 1st Lollapalooza tour which I didn’t get to see. I hope that with this you have made up your mind that you must have this experience for yourself. They are definitely more polished now than on that tour. I can see from your face that you too see this music is an experience. This experience is heavy, dramatic, emotional
I remember the 2nd time I saw them, Sober was playing, the bass line was so powerful it flowed through my body. It was so emotional I just found myself in tears singing out loud. I feel that moment in time was probably the closest thing I can maybe compare to a religious experience. I would like to hear if you have been able to see them live. Or Maynard’s other bands as well. A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Welcome to the family.

There's another version of this song: Trent singing with David Bowie on stage side by side. I often think these 3 versions this way: Version 1 the Trent original, Trent as the young protagonist is losing his battle against addiction and depression (BUT there's still a tiny glimpse of hope). Version 2 Trent alongside with Bowie, Bowie as the older protagonist has just come out of all the hardships and finally been able to enjoy a clean and happier life, now he looks back and realises "I'm not looking back anymore, I' moving forward". Version 3 Cash cover, Cash as the old protagonist who's about to leave this world, in his death bed he looks back again and says "oh wow what a life I've lived, I've gone through so much and I made it this far, I have a lot of regrets but I'm also proud of myself, I'm in peace now, bye world". Although I personally don't like Cash changing that particular one word in the lyrics, he did it from his perspective and did a great cover that fits the narrative perfectly, respectable.

This song is extremely spiritual. It stresses how a grudge will cycle back through your life and present differently until you let it go. Sometimes people don't and wonder why negative energy revolves through their life, like a bad cycle. It drags you down, or it will lift you up if you just let it go.

The whole Downward spiral album is a masterpiece. I know that everyone who’s into this kind of music knows that Trent is a genius but still I think this is underrated
And about this track: I love the J Cash version but this one is telling a hell of a different story and personally I think is much more powerful. Especially with the original sinister ending. One of the greatest and most powerful songs of all time
