I spent 25 years in television and you are an absolute natural in front of a camera. You've got the look, the intelligence, and the relatability. It's rare to see that in a CZcams host. Kudos to you. Keep up the great work!
And as a musician I appreciate your musical knowledge.
Absolutely gorgeous too! 😊
I would also agree. She seems quite comfortable, personable and intelligent.
Yes, absolutely beautiful, captivating, and knowledgeable. I could watch for hours. Love the channel.
Absolutely agree!
Yes, indeed. Cheers from Germany
It feels like a lullaby when the song starts
That dude's voice is incredible if you ask me.
Sweet Madame Blue... a must listen...
"Suite Madame Blue"
Suite Madam Blue was the first song that turned me on to STYX.... A true Classic
Born in '66, growing up in the 70's and 80's, Styx was one of the bands that dominated my cassette and LP playing. Thanks for listening. Personal favorites also Crystal Ball and Suite Madam Blue.
Me to! Born in 66 and grew up on Styx. Styx was 1st concert when I was 13.
@@brianbee Dec 15th, 1979, 2 weeks before my 13th birthday at the Summit here in Houston.
Edmonton Alberta, sometime in January 1980 for me@@michaelhoward5372
STYX was the best with Dennis DeYoung!
@@lawwdogg1digr I agree
the Intro gives me Shivers every time .
My favorite Styx song. My favorite part is the opening line "I'm sailing away". I love the way he sings it. It's a powerful and beautiful rock song; definitely one of the greatest.
I love watching your analyses. You mentioned that Dennis emphasizes his diphthongs. I looked up the definition and it's true. I never was aware of this until now; I hear the song in a whole new way now.
I saw Dennis DeYoung just before Covid hit. His voice was incredible!!! 😊
Dennis's stance and gesturing here is reminiscent of Freddy Mercury. Thank you for the reaction.
You need to do Dennis’s “Lady” just a fantastic listen!
That's my favorite of their songs!!
Man!!! What a great concert..the 70s rocked!!!
Dennis DeYoung's voice is instantly recognizable, always spot one and no auto tune, just pure talent and still has it today in his 70's! a home town treasure of Chicago!
Yes! No auto tune required.
This is truly the Definition of a Classical intro...both the Piano and Dennis DeYoung's vocal performance. Inspiring, to say the least.
If you don't do South Park Cartman's cover of this, you're missing out on one of the greatest covers ever created. I can't hear this song without hearing that version, and I grew up with Styx and Come Sail Away being huge on the radio.
🤣🤣
I came here to say this
been hearing this song ages before South Park and now I always think of Cartman singing the intro when I hear this song 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dennis DeYoung's style makes it obvious that he was born to be in broadway musicals rather than rock band.
Broadway musicals would have been a waste of his skills songs like this are timeless. Broadway is fleeting and most performances are forgotten within a short time.
Just like Meatloaf, right? Styx rocked the airwaves for years! Dennis was a great rocker!
I agree. He was a natural Broadway talent.
@@ronaldinnewmexico1912 He woulda been mostly forgotten if he had been on Broadway.. and likely would not have made as much money.
Dennis DeYoung of Styx, and Steve Walsh of Kansas are my forever vocals. And I've got a playlist with nothing but them. Takes me where no others do. #eargasm
That guy in Triumph was great!
Love them, such talent, truly a supergroup. Not only can Dennis sing great, but Tommy can too, and JY can too.

Styx is awesome!!
To me, Styx was a blend of the favorite styles of the individual members. I’ve always felt that Dennis was leaning heavily into a Broadway approach, musically, vocally, and performance-wise.
I highly recommend you check out a live version of Suite Madame Blue for a classic Dennis vocal.
Saw him a couple of years back and although he's well into his 70s, he hasnt lost a thing. Still an incredible singer.
❤Your Smile is the Best ! 😊
Hello 👋 this is Chris Davidson ❤ I just wanted to inform you that this is Not the full song, someone Has cut the middle instrumental part of the song.❤
Dang radio edit.
What is your email again?
That middle instrumentation is awesome ❤
There’s an old show called Freaks and Geeks that used this song to great effect at the very end of its first episode (during a school dance scene).
Yes! Just rewatched that episode last week. I'm introducing my kids to the show.
Born in '60, Grew up a block away from Tommy Shaw, used to see him in a local club before he joined Styx.
Every member of this band is ultra talented.
Dennis had a distinct voice, as does Tommy(a great vocalist as well).
I still have every vinyl they ever released, and also on CD. Always a pleasure.
By the way , you are a beautiful young woman, natural in front of the camera, and are relatable, and im guessing very sweet in person. Love watching your videos and reactions.
Your smile lights up the lens, and how you explain whats happening with the vocals is great.
Love that band. Babe is another one of their songs I can't get enough of. ❤
Babe 🤔 What's crazy is Babe was a hit, went #1 BUT the other band members despised the romantic love song, which helped break up the band 🤯
That was the classic “couples skate” song back in junior high during roller skate nights. 😂❤
It is so nice hearing someone being thrilled by this song and his voice in it. Bright is exactly what it is. It's just uplifting. And his vocals and that piano are utterly gorgeous. Been loving it like this since I was a teen, when it first came out. All these years and that hasn't lessened one iota. That's a rare thing indeed for me.
Great reaction, great song, great memories. Styx was blessed with two amazing singers, DeYoung and Tommy Shaw. Watch Shaw play and sing with the Youth Orchestra, amazing. Unfortunately, like a lot of bands from the glory days, they ended up splitting with very hard feelings. Great song and singing though!
They did get back together, we saw them at Fiddlers Green Amphitheater. We could hardly hear them because of noise ordinance stuff.
Another great Dennis DeYoung song is Pieces of Eight. Absolutely love his vocals on that song!
I was 10 years old when this song came out and I heard it on the radio for the first time. I ended up buying the grand illusion, which was the first cassette tape I ever bought.👍
Grand Illusion was my first album.
Styx was my 1st concert when I was 13 years old. Great song!
They were my first concert without my parents. Back in 1981, Paradise Theater tour
I have always loved this song. Especially the piano. Dennis is one of my favorite vocalists. Enjoyed your reaction. You are Awesome! 🤟🏻
Growing up in the 70's, Styx was one of the bands that dominated my play list. Along with Elton John, Billy Joel & Fleetwood Mac. When you heard Dennis DeYoung's voice, you knew you were listening to Styx. I saw Dennis DeYoung in his 2006 concert tour, "Dennis DeYoung - The Music Of Styx" at the Meridian Theatre (Formerly The O'Keefe Centre).. One of the best concerts I've been to.
Was just watching another reaction video to "Faithfully" by Journey. Commented on some of the best voices of rock, that I've seen live. Steve Perry-twice, Ann Wilson-once, Freddie Mercury-twice and Dennis DeYoung-twice. Man it was great to grow up in that era.
Whether or not this was recorded live, they sounded exactly like this when I saw them in '78 & '83. Exactly.
I actually wore out a cassette tape over-playing this song as a teen. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
This was played at an old friend's Funeral. I'll never look at this song the same again 🙏😞
I was blessed to meet them in the 70s. I think it was 77. All my neighborhood friends were going except me. It's such a great story involving bullies, a babysitter, and a manager of A&M Records. Ended up backstage partying with them and Nazareth !!! I became a forever fan!❤
Also, the outfits are pretty epic. James Young’s boots!
Two other great Styx choices would be man in the wilderness or crystal ball. You’ll get to hear Tommy Shaw on lead vocals on those two songs. There are also some good live versions on CZcams. Also check out the concert of them playing with the Cleveland contemporary youth Orchestra and chorus.
AGREE....this song is so addicting to just listen to. Another of their GREAT songs I'm sure will captivate you is 'Lady'. Add to your future reaction list. Enjoy!
That's my favorite song of theirs!
I also love this song, love Styx, Both Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw are phenomenal. Really enjoyed listening to this track with you!!!
This song and album Grand Illusion was SO powerful back in the late 70's. It was a MASTERPIECE. My teammates and I used to listen to it before my HS basketball games in the locker room. DEFINITELY got us jacked up 😉
I love watching you on your channel. You make me wanna keep coming back. The way you break down the vocals. Keep on doing what you do. I’ll keep watching your channel.
I grew up with this band being brought into our household in the form of LP vinyl, the 70's were a great time for storytelling music like this!
I still have my vinyl LP’s…..and plenty of Rush too! 😁
I love this song .this is the frist time i listen to it
Styx was such a great band of my youth and even better live!! Great react!
I was blessed to be born in 64. The music and the artists were were so privileged to have is awe inspiring. Love the classic works. Love your channel. Love from Canada 🇨🇦 ❤❤❤
That's my birth year too!!!
If you described this song to someone, you’d have a hard time explaining it’s a rock song, yet somehow it is, perfectly. Another wonderful analysis from this incredible vocal coach!
Cassette tapes! You gave it away! Now, you’re even more beautiful! Love your reactions! ❤
Hi! I love your reactions... thank you Bethany.
Watching your reactions to my favorite songs is a real trip. From Rush, AC⚡️DC, Styx, and Triumph you have changed the way I listen to my favorite bands😎
The live concert Back to Paradise is an awesome concert. It was in 1996. It's a must listen
Love this classic song and watching you react to it! The 1980 Styx song 'The Best Of Times' is my favorite of theirs- beautifully elegant, epic and hauntingly nostaligic. Love to see you react to that one someday!🤗
I saw Dennis live at a casino in New England when he was "supposed" to be in Canada. Great experience! He's still got it!
Dennis is awesome! He was the cofounder of Styx, and was thrown out by his band mates. Nice guys, huh? They are now a cover band. Only one original (JY) in the cover band. Dennis was not only a great singer, but a terrific songwriter. Dennis’ songs put them at the top of the charts , and made them money. 😊
Everything you said is true…
BUT, having been in a bunch of bands and dealt with lots of personalities, etc…I do get the impression that Dennis is probably incredibly hard to work with. “My way or the highway” and “diva” are phrases that come to my mind. Don’t get me wrong, he’s incredible and I love his music and his voice.
But I could easily see a band saying, “yeah, we’ve had enough”
@@mikeb4595Dennis appeared to be a perfectionist like Steve Perry. I really think that trait could be spread around today. People are lazy, and have no respect for others. AI has destroyed Styx, and many other bands that I once liked in my younger days. Jealousy can be a dangerous thing, too. Dennis continues to have a great marriage, and no drug or alcohol addictions. Tommy had or still may have alcohol and drug addictions. Dennis helped him financially in those areas. I just wish Tommy and JY would have been honest in interviews about what happened. The Dan Rather interview was baffling. 😮 I’m a Dennis fan, and always will be. Sure the past is the past, however, forgetting is the issue. This happened to Foreigner, and Journey. I don’t listen to any of these bands due to egotistical asses. I listen to my vinyls from the good old days. 👍
Suite Madame Blue is a must listen to get another good look at Dennis’ Vocal abilities.
Styx! I remember this was the first band I saw live in concert back in high school.. That was some 46 years ago!
(yea L'm old!) But I still remember it!
They were my first concert without my parents! I saw them in 1981. Loved them then and still do!!
Beautiful!
Seen them 4 time what a magical concerts
I've seen fancams of him singing this live and he sounds just as good as he does on the album. And it was available on YT, but their Return to Paradise tour closer in Chicago is a must see..
As for Dennis' diction he used to be a teacher when "Styx became Styx. When he was in college Styx was Tradewinds/TW4 before the introduction of James (JY) Young.
The 70's were a great time to be a teen growing into adulthood, what a soundtrack.
I saw their Paradise tour concert in the NJ Meadowlands. Great concert.
That tour was my first concert without my parents! Loved that album!
Thank you for pointing out so much of what I love about this song! I miss vocal class SO MUCH. (Gone due to stupid Covid.)
Love to hear you describing so precisely so many nuances that I have loved about Dennis De young and Styx for so many years! Love your attention to detail and appreciation for the beauty of it all.
I always pick up on the way he says 'gold' near 8:03. It seems he adds something to just the 'L' sound. I get the impression singers today don't go though nearly the training they did back then. They just show up and let the computer fix it. Back then it seemed they trained and trained, practiced and practiced until it was perfect, even a cappella.
John Deere used this in a Snowmobile clip when it came out. All the dealers had an open house in the winter it was to preview new equipment etc. Food and fun.
This was definitely the highlight of that particular John Deere Days!
Dennis has one of those voices that can't be duplicated, and his piano isn't half bad either. Anyone who is a fan of orchestral, or symphonic rock, has Styx to thank for being one of the early pioneers in the biz. By the way, great to see you again Bethany...I can now get on with my 2024!
Ahhhh... Styx. More please! Thank you SO much. I love your channel. Not only was Styx my "favorite band" in Junior High School, but my band "covered" the chorus of this song on tour. It was so fun. Please do more Styx and get into the THREE lead vocalists (individually) and their harmonies (as a group). I highly suggest the "Styx: Caught in the Act Live" concert video and the "Kilroy Was Here" film/performance (Mr. Roboto). Such great songs from my "childhood memories and the dreams I had..." I suggest Tommy Shaw singing lead on "Renegade", James Young singing lead on "Snowblind," and Dennis DeYoung singing lead on... well... anything (Babe?)
Love your reactions! Very nice.
Fantastic!
Many kudos.
😘😘👍👍
I'm so glad that I found your channel (it was the first Triumph video that hooked me).
Such a wide variety of music, and so many songs that I love to sing along with - usually when driving - part of the joy being their complexity and range.
I love watching your reactions, and hearing your breakdowns of why these songs are so interesting.
I love it that I can tell you just enjoy listening as much as I do! Love your breakdowns and technical insight, but your love for the music shines through! Subscribed🙂
What an amazing song, and seeing your face light up to it as the goosebumps spread... who knew I needed a good morning cry.. :)
First time viewer on your channel. I love the joy you have truly “hearing” this song, even though you have heard it before. Great insights and enthusiasm. I will definitely be checking out more of your work.
Seen your reaction to Triumph a couple of times. One of the best Canadian bands for sure...One of the oter best Canadian Bands for sure is April wine. Start with Roller or Sign of the Gypsy Queen, but there are so many more.
Love April Wine!!
I know Bethany's happy and having a great time when she starts to sway back and forth to the music. "Come Sway Away, Bethany!" =)
I love this sea shanty! ❤
I saw them in concert in the early 90's and the energy thyey projected drained you by the ebnd of the evening. So very blessed to see them live.
Styx with Dennis has been my favorite band since high school. I've seen Dennis with Styx and with his most recent lineup more times than I can count. Was lucky to meet him in person in 2004 and got a Pic with him.
Love it, love it, love it! Styx was one of my first loves and this is easily one of their biggest, most recognizable songs. They had three lead singers with three different styles that obviously blended together, harmoniously. Dennis Deyoung was/is a commanding frontman, a showman, for sure.
And, you described it as regal, and they’ve been categorized as “Pomp Music” which I think fits them well, but more in the sense, to me, as pomp & circumstance, instead of just being pompous.
Bethany, It’s a pure joy to watch you and listen to you covering some of my fondest music memories from a professional vocal point of view that I never could do. Thank you! ❤
There are only a handful of reactors, even the "vocal coach" ones, who really nerd out about song vocals. I am more of an instrumentalist in my upbringing. Not so much a vocalist. So getting some tips and observations actually helps me in the limited singing I do today.
I love that you really deep-dive when you are engrossed in a particular vocal performance.
I love this song!
I still love your voice and your face. Thanks for posting.
INDEED an awesome song by a very awesome group!
He IS brilliant!
I love this channel. You are perfect at this
Grand Illusion was the first album I ever bought.... Takes me back to high school. A great Chicago band.
There’s only one way to describe his voice. Perfect. He is so deliberate.
My high school graduating class song was between this and Dust In The Wind. The latter won but this song was everywhere back in the day..
I love love love this song. It came out when I was in middle school and I couldn't get enough. We had a radio on our bus (I guess to soothe the common beasts) and it played frequently. So new. So thrilling. So good. Still is.
I love the first part of this song before it picks up. The second part of the song was always just ok to me.
Please react to a Tommy song! "Man in the Wilderness" is a great vocal from him, but there are so many others.
Before heavier stuff captured me Styx and Foreigner were my favorite rock bands. There was such heavy competition among "arena" rock bands it was sometimes hard to choose. Lol. Add Paul Rogers(Bad Company) to the top of that list.
Good tunes and memories.
I love your life energy :) This from a lifelong performer. Keep the reviews coming, they are spot on!
Interestingly it looks like he's singing through and SM57. most singers use an SM58 which is brighter. I think his voice is quite bright and the SM57 may help warm it up.
Ahhh, memories. I was fortunate to see some of the greatest artists in concert during the 70s. Good times🏵🐝
Great reaction as usual! Please react to Boston "More Than A Feeling." Thanks! 👍🤘🤙
That's my all time favorite song!! When I hear it on the radio I jam it loud!!
Please do another on Styx featuring Tommy Shaw! Renegade is a great one. Tommy has been singing that song for 45 years, and at age 70, he still sounds the same as he did in his mid 20s. He has obviously taken great care of his voice.
Oh and thanks for your work! I am hooked... 😊 and so awesome you are *discovering* what so many of us METALHEADS have been privvy to for decades... keep doing your thing 👊 ♥
One more thing... my own introduction to THE VOCALYST, is your reaction to PANTERA & the song CEMETARY GATES.... played this at my mother's funeral and it's a special song to me, and i love how you just GOT it at 1st listen ☺
I think you should really give "Lady" by Styx a listen. Dennis Deyoung's voice really is powerful and intense in that song.
Just have to watch, whatever comes from you... You seem to be such a beautiful, stunning and honest person... I meen most of the videos you play are absolutely legendary and I like the way you comment them... But your smile and your face is just so heartwarming, I got to be true about this... Many greetings from good old Germany and if I could ever wish for a song it would be "Jonatha Brooks and Taste of Danger"...😍
Since you said you have heard this song before I'm surprised you didn't notice that keyboard solo in the middle was missing. Should've done a live version, but that's ok. Still love you break down the vocals. You're a beautiful young woman and a natural in front of the camera. A joy to watch.
Thanks
