One of the best bands. Lots of hits.
Pity that Tommy and JY tour as Styx while Dennis who actually wrote and sings all their top 10 hits has to tour as the "Music of Styx".
Close. Tommy Shaw wrote and sings "Too Much Time On My Hands" a #9 Billboard hit.@@chetstevensq
@@chetstevensq When Tommy Shaw joined he wrote several of their hits. The album Crystal Ball was named for the song he wrote on the album.
@@JDoors Tommy's BEST chart hit was #16, next was #24, (Renegade and Blue Collar Man, the falloff after that5 is into the 50s I think)so all their top 10s and #1 hits are written and sung by Dennis.
Styx was always branded as commercial rock.... but.... I saw them about 8 years ago..... best musicians I've ever seen.... they were incredible. Tomy Shaw is unbelievably talented.
Styx is an amazing band and very different song styles! One of my faves is Renegade!!!❤❤❤❤❤
RENEGADE Rocks Hard
very theatrical. much like Queen or Elton John. Or even ZZTop. (they had some great sets)
The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight are my favorite Styx albums. They have so many hits it is staggering. They are still touring to this day.
Same for me. The Grand Illusion was the very first album I bought as a kid. Still have it.
I lived next door to Tommy Shaw's (blonde headed guitarist) parents in Montgomery, Alabama growing up in the 80s.. My first car was a 78 Cutlass Supreme that belonged to Tommy's mother originally.
I went to several Styx concerts growing up and my dad was Tommy's dad's apprentice at Alagasco, the company they worked for and inspired one of Tommy's hit songs that he wrote, Blue Collar Man.
Tommy was a rocker at heart and left the band shortly after Mr. Roboto came out. Synthesizers and Broadway production would prove to ultimately be too much, but it was still a tough decision because Styx waa so lucrative.
Came back though when James Young said let's go rock the joint!!
@@andreadeamon6419 Tommy was a kid essentially when Styx initially picked him up.
@@Athlete_20 i know. I remember all the older teenagers were madly in love with him. Same with Leif Garrett. Pissed my sister off when he came up to me and was talking and said i was so cute. My sister didn't talk to me for about 4 months after my mom told her.
Tommy autographed many posters for me during that time, and I told several of my friend's older teenage sisters that he was my brother. Lol... drove them nuts... feel bad now
That is one amazing story thank you so much for sharing " Blue Collar Man " my favorite favorite song.
Dennis DeYoung has a VOICE. He absolutely wanted his performances to be operatic! The Paradise is one of the best rock albums ever. Best songs: Lady, The Best of Times, Come Sail Away, Babe, Paradise Theatre, Miss America, Suite Madame Blue, Lorelei, Renegade, Mr. Roboto, Too Much Time on my Hands, Long Nights, just so many.
Great list…not so keen on Roboto, but I won’t argue. For clarity sake, Long Nights is actually titled Blue Collar Man. 😉 Cheers!
Styx is a marvelous band from Chicago!! Great music😅
Couldn't agree more!
Yea Chicago!!!!
Thank you Britt. You and your reactions are beautiful.
i got to see them in concert in 2012 please do more Styx maybe do Lady next
Got to see Styx on the Grand Illusion and Paradise Theater tours back in the late 70's/80's. They were great live
The fact that you GOT this song is why I became a subscriber... You are an amazing reactor....amazing reaction!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen Styx live 4 or 5 times, all with the original members. Great show, great band.
When band's toured big venue's. And tickets were 20 bucks.
2 more Styx songs that are a must, Sweet madame blue and snow blind!
That's Suite, not Sweet
My bad!
Snow Blind is a fantastic sone!
I just saw Styx in Pompano Beach a couple of weeks ago and they still put on a great show.
Britt, try Lady and Come Sail Away by Styx 😊
I’ll check it out!
@@brittreacts Also check out Coming of age and high enough from Damn Yankees.
For "Come Sail Away" make sure to do the original album audio or live in 1983 or 1996 and NOT the Official video which is cut-down short for MTV.
@@snoopy9244 and "Come Again", "Where Are You Goin' Now".
Definitely check out the live version of Lady. You'll love it!
Styx is the river you must cross at death to reach the other side. There is a ferryman named Charon with a boat to take you over, just remember, " don't pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side" Chris De Burgh
Go down the Styx rabbit hole and stay awhile. You won't be disappointed.
She nailed Dennis in two minutes.
Ran into Tommy Shaw this morning at baggage claim in Nashville flying in from Orlando. He is just a nice chill talented guy.
My first concert was Styx 1978😅
I've seen them 3 times and they're playing tonight at a local casino. Still great after 50 years.
Styx is memories of my senior prom - These Are The Best Of Times was our prom theme.
Dennis Deyoung the led singer sang Vegas shows for many years after the band broke up . ❤
The whole band is so talented! Todd Sucherman, the drummer is one of the most amazing drummers in the world seriously! Check out his drum cam while playing Styx concerts, completely mind blowing how technically he is.😊
I’ll check it out!
Todd IS a great drummer. I am willing to put him in my top five, but for, there's only one GOAT and that's Neal Peart of RUSH. Check out HIS drum cam sometime
They were a Great live band, listen to Snow Blind
I saw them live on this Grand Illusion Tour
I saw them on this Grand Illusion Tour
I have seen Styx twice. Once in my 20s and they were great. I saw them again in my late 40s. I think it was the same crowd. We all laughed at how old everyone had gotten. Styx was still putting on a great show. I am in my 70s now and I don't think Styx or I could manage another concert.
Sure you can! Go ahead! They're still touring and, by all accounts, still putting on a great show. I'm planning to see them next month. 🎶🎵🎸🎤
The Midwest rock scene was awesome in the mid to late 70s. Styx, REO Speedwagon, and Ted Nugent considered it their playground. Rush spent a lot of time here too.
Styx is great and has aged well. I saw them in 2019 and they still got it
Styx 💜 ( another band with a similar style and similar meaningful lyrics in their songs is R.E.O. Speedwagon... the same kind of intensity and speed. One of their songs I really like a lot is Take The Long Way Home.) He adapted his voice and style on Grand Illusion to be reminiscent of being at a carnival with the "barker" yelling out to the crowd of ticket holders to come on in and see the show! Well done and that was live!
If the blonde guitar player looks familiar to you you may remember him from your reaction to the group Damn Yankees
Great reaction as always
got to see sticks in 1976 that was my very first. 🤘✌️🇺🇸. And Tommy Shaw has great vocals and one hell of guitarist.
Check out the Album version, Pure Siering Rock N Roll singing. Its a scorcher for sure. Totally different vibe.
I got to see them back in the day, then again a few years ago. They are still great!
Great reaction to a great band ! You should hear their song "Babe"... another great one.
I miss this Styx!!!! With Dennis as the lead singer. They need to bring him back just for one more tour!!
Your reaction to this is great, you get it. Styx does not disappoint in concert. They put on an amazing show. I'm so thankful I was born at the right time, I got to experience the amazing classic rock bands live.
That guitar is a stock Gibson Explorer. It was introduced in 1958, but didn't sell very well, so it was discontinued in 1963. Gibson brought it back in 1976 and it has been in continuous production ever since.
Tommy's actually playing a Hamer version here though. Although he surely did play a Gibson Explorer in the earlier days.
had tickets to see them in Cleveland in 80 or81 . got so "drunk" couldn't get out of the car , friends left me in car , sold my ticket , paid for eats later . they told me it was a hell of a show
Great Reaction! The Grand Illusion is also the name of the album this is on. It was their breakout album. I was lucky enough to see them right after this came out and they were opening for KISS. It was probably not long after that they started headlining concerts. This album has alot of great songs on it.
I saw that concert my friends went for Kiss I was so excited to see Styx
@@teresaslocomb362 It was a great concert! If you're a fan of Styx, you should check out Tommy Shaw playing a special show with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra ((if you haven't already). High School kids with Tommy mostly playing acoustic and jamming on Styx songs.
Wow, I so loved your reaction. You may be interested to learn that the lead singer, Dennis DeYoung did indeed release an album called 10 on Broadway back in 1994. You should definitely check that out. His rendition of "Bring Him Home" brings me to tears Every Single Time.
My first time seeing you react. I normally don't like reactions when the music is interrupted so much, but I find you so beautiful, expressive, and full of life that I subscribed. You made this a very entertaining and fun experience. Live life!!!!
Dennis DeYoung is my favorite of all time and I think he did do some Broadway. A GREAT showman.
So happy to see you reacting to that great song.Still many to listen to :)
Glad to see a new Styx fan! They were one reason the 70s were so great 😊
Dennis DeYoung The showman is awesome in quite a few more songs Tommy Shaw is great on the guitar My favorite album is Paradise Theater Great reaction new mama rock on
You should check out the studio version too. It’s less theatrical but still awesome ❤❤.
Never miss them and friends with 2 of them in Facebook. We've had some fun bets about football and baseball. Love them dearly
i saw them three times. great show. great music and performance.
This takes me back. I've seen Styx live several times, including the Grand Illusion tour. Always a great show.
This is a great song and thanks for showing the live version
I caught the tours for the albums Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. Great show every time!!
On to 250K subs Britt!
Lead singer and keyboardist Dennis DeYoug was on the 1993 20th Anniversary tour of the stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar appearing as Pontius Pilate in 268 shows on that tour. Also, Styx' concept album Kilroy Was Here (1983) was written as a Rock Opera.
Sweet Madame Blue is a great tune less known by them
Other great songs from this concert you should react to are Suite Madame Blue, Come Sail Away, Renegade, and Snowblind. I've been a Styx fan since 1977. James Young is my favorite band member.
They're playing 5 shows at the Venetian in Las Vegas starting Friday (Sat., Wed., Fri, Sat). I'll be there!
Saw them twice, in '78 on "The Grand Illusion" tour and '83 for the "Kilroy Was Here" tour.
Both great shows.
Was obsessed with this band and that guitar player!! 😂
Standing in line overnight for tickets, memories I cherish!! 😊
How many years later...still a grand illusion??
Love ❤ your vibe girl… keep on keeping it real !
Great song great reaction.
The music from the 70's the Lyrics told us a story in real life , songs like this have no expiry date cheers .
Deep rabbit hole here keep digging girl, great songs. Long blond hair guitarist is Tommy Shaw also an amazing voice who takes the lead. Can’t wait for your next one
This was one of my favorite of all your reactions, Britt. 🙂 They're music is always uplifting. You can't help but smile when listening. And a live show is like a religious experience - you just feel amazing afterwards with so much hope and positivity.
Love the band, seen em live 6 times. The singer Dennis DeYoung is/was a big Broadway fan - wrote, produced and sang productions on Broadway.
The band eventually broke up in the early 80s because the other members of the band felt he was being too theatrical and Broadway with the direction of his music and they wanted a little more traditions harder rock vibes.
Either way - he's phenomenal singer.
The band still tours without him. One fun fact about the band - then and now - they have three lead singers - Dennis On Keyboard/piano, Tommy shaw (rhythm, acoustic, and lead guitar) and "JY" James Young (guitarist). They each wrote their own songs and so the band's music is quite varied cuz they each have a different vocal style. It also creates amazing harmonies having three good singers.
This was fun to watch. It looked like you had a good time doing it.
One of my favorite Styx songs is often overlooked... Snowblind.... Dennis does not sing lead on that one... but it is a 'dark' topic.... I think you would enjoy reacting to it....
Snowblind is another great Styx song. 👍👍
Check out Paradise Theater from Styx. Great song and album. I went to that tour back in 1981. A one my top 2 concerts ever!
It's so true!! Dennis DeYoung has always sounded like his songs are part of a Broadway Musical. Great theater voice.
The lead singer on this song, Dennis DeYoung, always leaned "theatric", which led greatly to Styx's breakup in the 80's. During that hiatus (the got back together in the 90's) Dennis joined the nationwide production of given the role of Pontius Pilate. After Dennis' final departure from the band in 2000 he released a handful of solo albums including his own musical version of and , of which he sings his "favorite" Broadway songs.
Saw them in their prime a few times in the 70s, Fantastic , this clip is 40 yrs later reunion
They split in the 80s Dennis DeYoung went on to Broadway
Great reaction 👍
One of your better ones for me
This is exactly why I like people that react to bands that play live ,
You get there talent
There passion, there skill, their ability to play live , there ad-lib ,that's what every band strive to do play live, but enough about that, that's just me but
You've opened up the can now go down the rabbit hole of the band called "STYX" the catalogs is big
And worth doing
But anyway
Keep up the good work Brittreact 💯
I need to listen to more Styx. Great performance!
I was able to see Journey and Styx as a double bill in Seattle in 79. One of the best concert experiences I have had.
When I was in Junior High speech class, the teacher assigned a project to teams to write a speech about someone they admired. I still remember one team did a speech about Styx. It's just a rock band, but they made good arguments.
The BEST sounding Concert I've been to in my 62 years was STYX "Paradise Theater" Concert in Saarbrucken West Germany in 1981 or 82.
Hello From the Sunshine State of Florida 🇺🇲🌅🌞☀️🏝️. STYX was one of my Favorite Groups Growing up !!! ( The Grand Illusion Album is Perfectly Designed for today's Lies !!!! ( IMHO ) you should also listen to these as well
1) Angry Young Man
2) Miss America
3) I'm Sailing away
As always the like button 🔘 has been Illuminated 😁👍👍😎🤗
And now you have been introduced to the magical guitar of Tommy Shaw. Congratulations on your good taste.
Grand Illusion was the first STYX album I bought and have been a lifelong fan. I saw them 3 times. Twice with the original line-up (including John😇)
Most recently at Harrah's Lake Tahoe. They still KILL even without
Dennis DeYoung.
I've seen Styx numerous times. I even saw Dennis DeYoung in the Broadway touring musical Jesus Christ Superstar. He was incredible and the cast was stellar! Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson, who played the parts of Jesus and Judas in the 70s movie were in the cast as well as Irene Cara.
wow, You got to see Irene Cara? I am a simple man who knows who this incredible woman is. She wrote and sang original timeless hits yet few people know who she was. I don't understand why.. I was very sad to hear the news she died. She is of my generation and I was disturbed to find out she passed away. She was so lovely. kids, Just look her up. .I am certain you will know her voice as part of our culture. She is an unnamed icon. The woman won every major award, Academys, Grammys, Golden Globes, Billboards and it goes on. to international fame. You never heard of her?
Dennis DeYoung has been to NYC broadway many times as a player. Musical.
Great live show, listen to 'Come Sail Away'. Make sure you get the full version.
I went to the Paradise Theatre show, so good.
This entire concert, "Return to Paradise," is excellent.
LMAO! …lovin’ the face after the “…rise up” comment! Talk about theatrics! And it’s Styx, plain Styx (after the river)..mhmm!
Styx was one if not my favorite band in the late 80s. Enjoyed your reaction.
Nice vocals Britt. So glad you enjoy Styx...
Watched your reaction again, awesome! Gotta check out some of their other stuff, privately, of course…the vocals on ALL of their songs are top notch…”Crystal Ball”, “Boat on the River” to “Castle Walls”, “Suite Madame Blue” and “Renegade”…hold ya breath and dive deep!
paradise theatre belongs on the list of one of the best albums of all time...they always had a big concept story behind their music and it added that extra layer of drama to it..and they had the musical props to always pull it off..
You are correct that he has a Broadway singer's voice..., he has done Broadway! I was in Wash. D.C. when he was singing at the Ford Theatre. He was doing Pontious Pilate in the play Jesus Christ Superstar! And he was AMAZING!!!
they played at a local high school near me, when I was a kid, And Tommy Shaw, Wow
Dennis DeYoung actually did a CD called 10 from Broadway where he totally crushed some of the most famous songs. I love it.
So, during COVID, Denis Deyoung, the keyboard and lead singer, did private concerts from his home to motivate people under lockdown. As did Brian May from Queen, and many others. I thought that was really nice of them to do just to keep people's spirits up
Gotta stop stopping for me to keep listening to you girl 😊
I love this band and actually liked Denis and this is one of my favorites from them i grew up enjoying moms Styx albums
Love the message of this song!
Thankyou for experiencing my generation. Enjoy the Show
You bet!
Vocalist Keyboardist Dennis DeYoung is a theater geek which led to him being pushed out of the band. They started as a Rock Band and Dennis was pushing them more into a concept band with Kilroy was Here being a massive hit, the rest of the band hated it. After his ouster from the band he toured with the national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar as Pilate, he has also released an album of broadway hits. I have seen Styx 5 times and have even met most of the band a couple of times. Super nice guys, just really wish YJ and T Shaw Kissed and made up with Dennis DeYoung for one final tour.
I hate Mr. Roboto.
They're happier rocking without him. I'm with the guys
deyoung was NEVER a theater geek never.
playing his songs including roboto @@andreadeamon6419
@@mattbecham597 agreed, I thought it was terrible.
You should listen to "FOOLING YOURSELF" by STYX. You'll love it.
One of my very first albums when I was 8 years old
yes we can hear them
They are really good
Brit, I love your stuff. Watch it regularly...which is how I ended up here. I am of the age that these are the bands of my age, but just an FYI.
STYX= the mythical river over which the riverman would transport those destined for the lower worlds. This is often the reason customs lay coins on the eyelids of the deceased...to pay the fairlyman to carry them to the other side.
