This song was written for the United States bicentennial, 1976. My understanding is that "Madame Blue" refers to the statue of Liberty which was tarnished a blue-green color. The song says that the U.S.A. is not a child anymore and should begin to act like a grown-up.

The current version of Styx out on tour still sound fantastic... more prog rock with the later albums without Dennis, but Tommy and James young and the rest of the band still sound fantastic. I saw them many times through the 80s, 90s and 2000s, they always put on great shows and have been a tight band with all their lineups. Lawrence Gowan is on keys and sings most of Dennis' parts and is a fantastic musician as well.

Most Styx songs should be viewed through the lens of this 1996 “Return to Paradise Theater” performance.
In most cases, it’s the penultimate performance of each song.

EPIC band!! Styx has 3 lead singers. Renegade, Come Sail Away.... 10 top 10 hits first ever rock ballad in Lady from 1972 and one of the very few bands to have top 10 hits in 3 different decades ( 70's, 80's and 90's). I will suggest their last top 10 hit " Show Mw The Way". I feel its one of the best and most powerful videos of the 90's. Watch the video its incredible. Thanks for playing and reviewing this great live version of Suite Madame Blue.

@@DB-kl9bp I agree the whole Kikroy project was a mistake but I do like the song Mr Roboto. Dennis DeYoung kept wanting to get more theatrical and the rest of the guys just wanted to have a rock'n'roll band.

Dennis DeYoung wrote this in 1975 as America was gearing up for its bicentennial celebration in 1976. The song is not a celebration of the event, but a look at how it was being exploited.

Also a heavier song (with a mellow start): “Miss America.” And “Crystal Ball” runs the gamut from soft to loud, and showcases another of the band’s strong voices, Tommy Shaw (who is playing the double-neck guitar in “Suite Madame Blue”).
And from the Paradise Theater album, “Rockin’ the Paradise” (with the brief lead-in song “A.D. 1928”) and “Too Much Time on My Hands” are louder and more up-tempo.
Great band. “Blue Collar Man,” as others have suggested, would be an excellent next listen.

Styx was never a raging heavy rock band... they were comparable to Queen - a mix of rock & pop w/ vocal harmonies... 'South Park' made them famous again in the 90's after Eric Cartman sang 'Come sail away' by Styx on one episode.
Former singer/ keyboardist Dennis DeYoung was like Elton John - he would croon the romantic ballads like 'Lady' ... 'Babe'... He also wrote the sci-fi Styx album 'Kilroy was here' in 1983 which yielded one of their biggest hits - 'Mr. Roboto'.
Styx debuted in 1972... and broke big in 1977 w/ their 7th studio album 'The Grand illusion'... which sold 3x platinum in the US, despite critics in the press hating their music... They were playing arenas and stadiums in the 70's and early 80's and scored back-to-back 3x platinum records - 'Pieces of eight' (1978)... 'Cornerstone' (1979)... and 'Paradise Theater (1981)
'Kilroy was here' (1983) sold platinum but endured a backlash for its experimental direction.
Styx's 'Greatest Hits' album has sold 2x platinum to date.
Styx was formed in Illinois by Dennis DeYoung (vocals/ keyboards) and James 'J.Y.' Young (guitar/ vocals)... Tommy Shaw (guitar/ vocals) joined in 1975 and was a key member who helped Styx deliver songs that made them a sensation... Shaw left the band in 1984 and eventually rejoined Styx in 1995... Their original drummer John Panozzo passed away in 1996... Chuck Panozzo (bass) is still a member but does not tour w/ the band anymore.
Dennis DeYoung was fired in 1999 after he declined to tour ... he performs as a solo artist nowadays.
Styx still records and tours w/ Tommy Shaw, J.Y. and Todd Sucherman (drums), Lawrence Gowan (vocals/ keyboards).
Some of the memorable hits by Styx - 'Renegade' ... 'The best of times' ... 'Blue collar man'

  • @castlew4162
    @castlew4162 Před 2 měsíci +1

Hi Lulu, huge Styx fan here. I put quite a bit of coments for your reaction to "Lady" live from Winterland in 1978, including that it was the first power ballad in music history.
This performance was from the 1996 "Return To Paradise" tour when the "classic" lineup(except the drummer John Panozzo who was very ill and passed away during the tour) got back together after splitting up in 1983. It is an awesome live performance with a lot better recording equipment than the outdoor Winterland one from 1978. So even though it was 20 years after many of the songs were first released, they still sound great. Todd Sucherman was a Styx fan before joining so he knew most of their songs, and he is one of the best drummers ever - nowadays he also is a recording studio drummer for many artists, performs quite a bit outside of Styx, and he gives master classes in drumming and releases videos of his drumming with Styx in concert. He was Modern Drummer's best drummer of the year 10 times.
For "Suite: Madame Blue" the Suite refers to a composition of music that has a number of different parts, "movements", that make up the whole. There is actually another part to it, an intro. track written and performed by John Curulewski on Styx's "Equinox" album. John C. was a founding member who left to pursue a solo career and that's when Tommy Shaw joined to tour in support of the "Equinox" album.
This song also follows a loose characteristic of many of Styx's songs, in that they start out slow, build up, and then explode in full rockin'-out mode. Another aspect of many of their songs is that they are inspirational, upbeat, and even when dealing with a hard message or times they have a hopeful, "things will get better" attitude before the end.
"Come Sail Away" is a popular song of theirs and is the "heart" of Styx and Styx fans. Check it out in the same "Return To Paradise" tour concert and see the energy the Band has with their fans.
Styx has a wide variety of song styles, and has plenty of hard-rocking ones. "Blue Collar Man" is a Tommy Shaw song that rocks along with one of Styx's most popular song, "Renegade", . "The Grand Illusion", "Queen Of Spades" and "Born For Adventure" are some of Dennis DeYoung's more rockin' songs. James "JY" Young is the hard-rocker lead singer/songwriter of the group with songs like "Miss America", "Young Man", "Snowblind", "Man Of Miracles", "Half-Penny Two Penny", and "Midnight Ride".
There are also some deep cuts and outliers that are very good and popular with fans. Back then there was Album-Oriented Rock, so we listened to whole albums at a time. Many of the fan favorites were never hits, never released as singles, and rarely if ever performed live. This includes "Man In The Wilderness", "CASTLE WALLS", "A Day", "Best Thing", "Boat On The River", "Love In The Midnight", "The Grove Of Eglantine", and "Clair De Lune/Ballerina".
For what I say are "combo" songs, songs that have a combination of slow, conteplating, ballad-like parts; and more up-tempo rockin' parts are songs such as: "Crystal Ball", "Fooling Yourself", "Come Sail Away", "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue", "Pieces Of Eight", and "Light Up".
I could go on for a year, but I'll yet you get on to more music.

Todd Sucherman was on drums in this, so this was more than likely from the Return to Paradise album in '95. He replaced John Panozzo after he lost his battle with alcohol. Basically, it's a live album with two new studio recordings. I suggest you try On My Way from that.

  • @kallsop2

I remember hearing this backbwhen it came out and the only station that would play it also included Prelude 12 as the intro to the song.
Equinox to Paradise Theater are the best albums. All had great songs and all featured James Young, Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung's outstanding vocals as well as JY and Tommy's guitar work.
Got to see the Cornerstone tour in 1979, and then Paradise Theater tour and they rocked.
For something harder, Miss America, Renegade, Queen Of Spades, Come Sail Away are good choices.

Not my favorite performance; this is from the 1996 reunion tour, and Dennis DeYoung (songwriter/vocals/keyboards) is being a showoff and stretching it out too long. The original performance on the "Equinox" album or the live show from Winterland in San Francisco in 1976 have more punch.
This may also be because original drummer John Panozzo isn't here, as the alcohol abuse that killed him a few years later had driven him out of the band by now. His replacement (Todd Suchermann) has his fans, but Todd just isn't driving the song here. Mid, at best. I would avoid this show if possible; there are numerous pre-1985 shows available on video. Plus there's no reason not to do album versions.
I'm sure you will get a lot requests for the Big Hits, so let me give you some hidden gems others might not recommend
Quick is the Beat of My Heart (1972)
    A Day (1972)
    The Grove of Eglantine (1973)
    Golden Lark (1974)
    Born for Adventure (1975)
    Put Me On (1976)
    Miss America (1977)
    I'm O.K. (1978)
    Lights (1979)
    Half-penny, Two-penny/A.D. 1958 (live performance please)
    and, skipping ahead,
    Everything is Cool (1999)
    Enjoy!
