There's a surprise! Elkie started off as a blues singer (didn't they all) in the band "Vinegar Joe" with Robert Palmer ("Addicted to Love")
Another one of hers you might like is "Lilac Wine"
No they all didn’t .
@@Jake-jr2zh Obviously - just a shorthand way of expressing my recollection of the state of play of music at that time. I really didn't think I'd have to write a musicological thesis in the comments just to avoid some smart Alec leaving a daft soundbite...
@@nightwishlover8913You were the one making generalisations.
@@Jake-jr2zh Yes I know - and I've just explained why. By the way, were you there?
@@nightwishlover8913 Ignore him. He's a dick.
I have seen the great Elkie many times live in concert in recent years and she has always given 100%. Her voice remains to be a work of art. This lady is without a doubt - FABULOUS !!!
It wasn't easy being a female singer fronting a band in the UK in the 1970's. Maggie Bell and Kiki Dee also come to mind. There were female pop singers, folk singers and backing singers, but commercial success for rock and roll singers was very hard to come by. Elkie Brooks probably made the most successful transition to the mainstream with quite a run of hits following on from this song. But she already had a formidable reputation as a live performer with the band Vinegar Joe, singing alongside Robert Palmer. There are some videos of that band on CZcams and they are worth a look.
Thanks for this reaction. It brought back great memories of seeing Elkie live on several occasions. Love her raspy voice. “Lilac Wine” is another great song she sings.
No, you're not the only one. I remember as a kid being so utterly moved and captivated by that song. Goosebumps and a lump in my throat. I think anything, when done with love, and from a place of love has the capacity to pull at your heart.
You might like to review Kiki Dee, Amerouse. Another British gem.
Love your work, thanks.
Listen to Elkie Brooks live in concert here on CZcams singing “Baby what you Want me to Do “
I went to see her perform in Torquay, It was an absolute masterclass. She is such a fantastic performer and relates with her audience in a way that many artists fail to do. After all the years she still has IT.
Ever since her first days in Vinegar Joe in the early 70's, Elkie's star quality and show stopping vocal chops were obvious, (this is what allegedly led to the split with Robert Palmer, who allegedly viewed these things as his exclusive preserve in the band).
She produced a range of premium offerings for years, always successful, but without the stratospheric breakthrough that her talent probably deserved. This version is a stunning testimony to the enduring nature of that talent. Thanks.
Wow! What a voice! Love the sax as well. Dang that's good. Thank you Bethany!
Loved her version from 1977 but this is now my favorite, what a class act.
It's like she's adding another musical story to the song's story with her voice.
I bloody love elkie brooks, my dad had her Album and got me hooked .
Always loved Elke, I bought the Pearls Album in 1981 but I haven't listened to her in a long while. Amazing that she was 72 when this was recorded. She is 79 this year and still performing on her "Long Farewell Tour" (might have to get tickets) - Her voice is holding up so well, still got that Blues vibe. She did disappear from the mainstream after the 80's, I thought she had retired to Cornwall but apparently not. If you do any more songs from her, you can't go wrong with any song from the Pearls Album.
Saw her live in the early 80s, love her, especially Lilac Wine.
? I hear Etta James, Bonnie Raithe,Lucinda Williams, Patti LaBelle and the list goes...
That too, the amazing jazz fusion that brings it home. Thank you for this fantastic introduction to such a Gem.
Delighted to have been the one to introduce you to Elkie Brooks! SAH
Still got it - her voice has matured since I saw her live in the mid 70s.
Thanks for doing this. I love Ellie Brooks and this song. Also love “lilac wine”, among many others. I’m in my 70s so remember from many years ago.
I'm with you there...(71)
Sounds like the female version of Rod Stewart. Awesome! Thank you!
This song was on Elkie’s album “ Two Days Away “ produced by the legendary Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller .
The most beautiful voice on CZcams introduced by the most beautiful lady on CZcams. Perfect.
Elkie in the same session as this ,done the Dylan song “Make you Feel my Love” It’s was AMAZING, it’s on an Album BBC radio 2 The Piano room, along with other artist like Sam Smith, U 2, Ed Sheeran , George Michael and others.
I’m flying from Spain to her in London at the Cadogan Hall in September . Elkie has been compared to Tina Turner and Janis Joplin many times .
Her concerts are amazing.
Love your reactions. So much knowledge and passion and a gorgeous personality and expressions. 😊
As they say, "Class is permanent"
The distilled essence of my childhood right there! My mum had Pearls on repeat, well, that and Carol King, Barbara Dickson and the Hooked On Classics and Rock Classics series'.
A Siren Savage for sure! She reminds me of a older version of Claire Daines A great Blues singer. That photo on your thumbnail caught my eye, the master plan I think 😲 YES!! Though A Rock/ Metal head (knuckle head my dad would say) EVERGREEN and WOMEN IN LOVE 💓 by Barbara Streisand captivates me. Thanks Bethany!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Oh my God! I didn't know this existed. I recently left a comment regarding Kiki Dee, saying that Kiki and Elkie Brookes were rock chicks with amazing voices but the record companies didn't know what to do with them so they tried to smooth off the rough edges and make them more girly and soft. I'm so pleased that Elkie has gone back to her true self. She looks so much happier and sounds amazing. Kiki Dee has done the same thing. Both great talents who should be more appreciated than they are. Thank you for playing this. It's made my day. ❤
Ellie Brooks stands the test of time , check out , Fool if you think it’s over (Chris Rea) check out Gasoline Alley ( Rod Stewart) and check out the band Vinegar Joe with Robert palmer. ❤
Such fun watching her do it live! One of my favorites from the Hangout. I feel like I just watched a masters class in singing a song. The tone of her voice, especially when she sings the title, really helps tell the story. You can feel all of Pearl's life experience as a singer!
I haven't heard her songs before , ,how did I miss her ?
She’s known as the “ British Queen of Blues “ She’s the most charted female artist in the UK album charts ever.
Her Album Pearls stayed in the charts for 79 weeks.
I think she was 72 when she did this version. Incredible.
Wow she really belted out that number at 72 years young in this video. Now at 79 I'll betcha she hasn't lost a beat! 🎤🎵 Apparently another Tom Jones type blessed with incredible vocal genes.
@-Vocalyst1. I didn’t uncover anything Bethany
I've added her to my playlist. Yeah, I'm excited to discover another singer through you. Question to self: Why haven't I heard her before now?
Go listen to her live singing “Baby What you Want me to Do” it’s here on CZcams. It’s great.
She just got better with age. :D
I remember so clearly when this first came out. I was only a kid but me and my siblings used to love singing along to this. What a voice Elkie still has. i don't think i have heard this since then really. Thanks for the great song, singer and memories.
She has tones of Renne Geyer. Great voice
Absolute classic. If you like this, you're going to LOVE her 1983 cover of Rod Stewart's "Gasoline Alley". Then, following the vibe, check out Kim Carnes' song My Old Pals. They go so well together.
Could you do a video on the amazing Neko Case? I promise you won't regret it. She has a singular and beautiful voice.
Saw her when she was with Vinegar Joe. Awesome vocalist. I recommend you listen to some of her early stuff with that band. Sadly not much on YT.
There’s lots of VJ stuff here on YT.
I bought an Elkie Brooks LP nearly 50 years ago and wore it out lol.
My favourite ever track has to be "No More The Fool", the power and emotion is incredible - you would love it.
Check her out with a young Robert Palmer in a band called Vinegar Joe. They made only a few albums in the early 70's, but they were really good, even though they didn't sell many records.
This lady is spotless.
Not wrong, there'd he fellows for miles with bulging trousers just to get a glimpse.
A class of singing, all the Taylors, Arianas and Brittneys of the world won't reach in a million years!
Why Elkie Brooks never went stratospheric is a complete mystery to me. A remarkable singer. She had quite a bit of exposure and some hits too, and deserved so much more success than she had. Just listen to her here. Fabulous.
She was a pretty big deal for a decade or so in the UK but it never translated into success overseas. i guess she just wasn't promoted well by management or the record company.
@@Veaseify I agree, it wasn’t for lack of talent (or looks for that matter).
Elkie never liked the music business , too much BS for her liking. She was the type who would turn up for the opening of an envelope.
Very reminiscent of a lady who was also known as Pearl...Janis Joplin. In fact, Pearl was the title of one of her albums.
I remember this from childhood and, in fact, you could really say her powers are slightly diminished with age. I sometimes think she's a case of 'What could have been'.
Her voice has got more powerful with age.

Tyler can’t cut it live. Elkie on the other hand is stunning live.
Sorry auto correct changed her name to Ellie in stead of Elkie.
I'd love for you to react to "Wasted Time" by Skid Row, and their amazing singer Sebastian Bach. Both my wife and I used to try to sing along on this song while driving, and we would almost lose our voices every single time.
