So much power. I was almost frozen in awe. Incredible talent, presence and delivery. It always amazes me to hear him sing Jerry’s words so passionately and full of so much emotion. Unparalleled talent…sorely missed. My favorite singer of all time. 🙏🏼

Lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell considers this song the masterpiece of their debut album, that his own guitar solo gives him chills, and that Layne’s vocals on it are amazing. A tormented encapsulation of the fraught relationship Layne had with a girl named Demri Parrott, truly the love of his life. They used drugs together, got addicted together, and her death in October 1996 was a blow he never recovered from. Yet even so, it was as he sang here, “I still love you, but I still burn.”

We are all Alice In Chains fans. Jerry said that the song was written before the name change from Alice -N- Chains to Alice In Chains. I agree that it fits his and demri’s lifestyle the best. The song was written in 89 and released on facelift. There have been multiple stories and the only people I trust are Jerry and Sean. Layne is my favorite of all time with anything music. Not trying to stir it up, glad I got AIC brothers here.

Jerry was doing a lot of unannounced shows in LA some time after Layne's passing, and William's previous band, Comes With The Fall, was often the opening act. (We're talking some shows with a few hundred people, if that.) So I'd heard William a fair amount, and when he was announced as the lead singer, I was skeptical. Bleed The Freak was the test for me. And not long after, I heard him do it, and nail it. (Man, I still look back fondly on that time.)

There are many reasons I enjoy your videos. For one, many of the videos you analyze are songs by bands I love. This song is a perfect example. There is also your respect for the artists. And since I am not a trained musician or singer, listening to your analysis of the video is interesting as I gain insight into what is required to produce this music I love so much. But, the utter highlight is seeing you watch a video and truly feeling and becoming engrossed by the passion and emotion that some of these singers/artists put into their songs. Layne poured his heart and soul into his songs, his singing. And watching your facial expresses as you tune into those feeling, seeing your empathy is amazing. Why? Because I can empathize with you as I went through the same thing listening to Alice In Chains, Rush, Triumph, etc.... I especially love it when you are so engrossed that you lose yourself in the song and forget that you are supposed to be analyzing it. To me, that speaks volumes about how much the performance has captivated you. Keep up the AMAZING videos!

It makes me happy that ppl are still learning about him & his craft and are appreciating him in the manner that he deserves. He could swoon you with his gentleness and the next word, blow your doors off with his powerful, gritty delivery. @13:20 how he pushes put the yea-ah…even quivering at the end & puts his head down, you know THAT was his heart singing. Layne was in a class of his own.

That brings back so much, I remember 12-13 years old going everywhere with my walkman jamming to Alice in chains albums over and over again all the time, getting in trouble in school jamming out to this wow I forgot all about that, old guns and roses, Megadeth, Ozzy damn I remember all over again what made me so passionate about music in the first place. Thanks Vocalist you done it again I really needed that bit if inspiration today much appreciated, funny the unexpected places like can take you to find serenity isn't it lol. Hope everyone has a wonderful day, something about is calmness with his intensity that always inspired me it's like calm during the storm or something, whatever it was he was the master of it.

Another thing this song shows about Layne is his love for YEAHs in his songs. I like to think that all the YEAHs are the rock versoin of scat.

Thank you for doing this. This is a good "alternative" to the subtle beauty/vocal harmonies of Down In A Hole (MTV UP), where it showcases Layne's unbelievable power when he was at his best. I always thought this reminded me of a 4 min song version of Romeo & Juliet : tragic love expressed by seminal artists : Shakespeare with his poetry, Layne with his voice.

I saw them a few times before his death. He was insanely clear and consistent. We lost a legend too soon.

Loving your channel, hearing the technical side of singing/vocals is very interesting. Also watching you listen to music in a completely different way than we do is very cool.
I am wondering if after hearing a song, do you read up on any of the singers past or current history. Many of the singers you listen to have very sorted pasts or their current life (or no life). Some of the most powerful well rounded singers have had bad upbringing or have taken their own lives. It gives a different look on their ability to communicate emotion with the pain they are going through.

Layne was an incredible vocalist. His tone is very powerful but he could be so delicate while harmonizing with Jerry Cantrell. You should check out Mike Patton from Faith No More- Ashes to Ashes is a great song to see his range.
