I often see people comment how the 80's were the best decade for music and there is no doubt that there were some great and memorable pop/rock songs in that era. However if you dive deeper into 70's music, its pretty obvious which period had more quality across the genres.

@@Progbassist people that say 'the 80's' are probably mostly those who grew up in the 80's, that for many it was their initiation into really getting into music with their friends -- it's 'home' for them nowadays so they're partial to that.

They still make good music, it just requires searching. Good stuff used to be top 40 on the radio. Nowadays, the best stuff goes largely unnoticed. Check out 1) Nathaniel Rateliff " time makes fools of us all" released 3 days ago 2) War On Drugs " clean living" 3) Beth Hart - Spirit of God. Even the old bands are making their best stuff. Styx's 2017 album " the mission" is their best ever. Check out " red storm".

"Carry On Wayward Son" & "Dust In The Wind" are their 2 biggest hits. This is one of the most iconic songs in all of music. The musicianship is stellar, the vocals just outstanding and the composition and arrangement of the song is perfection. I don't if you have heard of them, but there's a professional cover band out of Kentucky called the Lexington Lab Band. They are a collection of outstanding session musicians and session singers whose covers are almost perfect. They have a YT channel and a 250+ song catalogue and there isn't a mediocre performance on their list. They did a live version of Carry On a short while that is outstanding. They had about 15 people on stage. Five or six guitarists, bass, keyboards, drums (including timbales and congas) and four backup singers. It is an amazing performance and I think you would like it. IMHO they are the finest cover band I've ever heard. You will enjoy them.

Back in the 70's Kansas was recording in a studio adjacent to a studio where Heart was also cutting an album. When Ann Wilson (one of the most iconic singers, male or female, in all of rockdom) heard Steve Walsh singing, she paused their recording and went next door to see who the hell was behind that incredible voice! That's pretty high praise.

I saw The Eagles, Styx, Jackson Browne, Frampton, Boston, Foghat, Kiss, The Outlaws, and The Moody Blues. And a little known band called Van Halen who opened up for Black Sabbath. Sabbath had a bad night after Van Halen left the stage. People went nuts for Van Halen. 15 year old me was transformed that year. Every time he hit a homerun or got a highlight worthy hit, Chris Berman on Sports Center would say, "It's Mark Carreon My Wayward Son." Obviously, in reference to this song. When the song ended, no one said a word! I love it! Speechless, the proper response to a masterpiece! If you ever see the video for this, you'll see a guy with huge hair, that is Robbie Steinhardt, the violin player for Kansas, but there isn't any violin in the song so he's singing backing vocals, playing the tambourine! Robbie, R.I.P., sings lead on some songs, his violin is one of the reasons Kansas has a unique sound! On Leftoverture I recommend: The Wall, Miracles Out Of Nowhere Magnum Opus, Cheyenne Anthem. Point Of Know Return is great as well: Dust In The Wind is the obvious choice, but Point Of Know Return, Portrait He Knew, Closet Chronicles, Lighting's Hand, Sparks Of The Tempest, and Nobody's Home are great choices! From there, I'd check out Icarus Borne On Wings Of Steel, Song For America, Can I Tell You, Lonely Wind, and The Pinnacle.

Saw them live in LA in 1982 and will se them again this August. They are quite the band, even live.

This entire album is absolutely one of the greatest rock albums ever. They are such great musicians and were so incredibly tight on this recording that every song is amazing.

The lead singer & drummer of the band FIDLAR once did this at Karaoke. That says so much about that band.

I think this song is about returning vets. The different tempos shows the various emotions. Anger, fear, horror, insomnia. Then the lyrics....listen how they accurately reflect those emptions. In particular, the returning Vietnam vets, who were DRAFTED and were spit on and reviled. Young boys who had no idea about politics......exposed to horrific tragedies. "Lay your weary head to rest...dont you cry no more." Listen again now and think about it.

A completely perfect song from start of finish. I also heard someone say it’s a song full of hooks, from the vocals to the riffs to the solos, they’re all hooks and that sounds correct to me. It all hooks you in

My favorite band of all time: Steve Walsh-Lead Vocals, Keyboards, Percussion, Kerry Livgren-Guitars, Keyboards, the main song writer, Robbie Steinhardt-Violin and Lead Vocals on some songs, Phil Ehart-Drums, Rich Williams-Guitars, and Dave Hope-Bass. Carry On Wayward Son was the song that was their first hit, their debut, Song For America, Masque were their albums before Leftoverture. Their first 3 album were superb, in my opinion, but like Boston's debut, not a bad song on Leftoverture. Point Of Know Return is superb, Monolith and Audio Visions great as well. Vinyl Confessions came next featuring John Elefante as their new lead vocalist-Keyboards and guitars, great as well, but without Steve Walsh. Drastic Measures was next, not great, but had some good songs. I lost track after their album Power, but The Prelude Implicit and Absence Of Presence are stellar! Thank you for reacting to my favorite group since 1974! I hope you react to more! Anything from Leftoverture and Point Of Know Return(Dust In The Wind or Point Of Know Return are great choices, they're the hits), Closet Chronicles, Lighting's Hand, Sparks Of The Tempest, Nobody's Home are all great choices. Hopefully you'll react to Can I Tell You, Lonely Wind, The Pinnacle, Song For America, Incomudro-Hymn To The Atman, Icarus Borne On Wings Of Steel, People Of The Southwind, Relentless, Hold On, Got To Rock On, Play The Game Tonight, Chasing Shadows, Window's, Crossfire, Fight Fire With Fire, End Of The Age, and Incident On A Bridge. Again Thank you, I hope you're well! I'm looking forward to your reaction!

70's obligatory Al Stewart comment🙂: I went to my first Al Stewart concert last night, absolutely fantastic! You must see him while he is touring! Fan since Song on the Radio was a song on the radio. Only Al would do an encore with a song about William McKinley (25th president) and explain how his election strategy is a life lesson for dealing with relationship breakups. Your Al Stewart reaction videos are the only reactions I rewatch, and I'll watch them every few months. Back to your regularly scheduled great Kansas comments...!
