Back in 76, i picked up this beautiful blond i just met. We were riding in my 69 chevy ss and listening to kansas. I married that girl . Going on 42 years strong.
One of the great things about music is how it can bring you back to that moment in time
nice!!
That's awsome David. I'm referring to the car.......... and the girl 😉 doesnt mater if it was a Camaro, chevelle, Impala, or other. Great year for you I'm sure.
This is a wholesome boomer post
congrats! i love seeing it work right for a couple.
Lawrence - Kansas. Dad's on a hunting trip, and he hasn't been home in a few days :)
I don't understand that reference. :)
@@crowleypie5297 It's the TV show Supernatural.
😰😥😭 hits so much harder .. Last season. Ugh. Like.jensen said..... The end 😭 15 seasons. Ugh
Y'all need to watch supernatural
I came to the comments just to see a smart ass supernatural reference. Not disappointed! lol
“What’s the name of that college town in Kansas?”
Me, an Australian who has never left my country and never even met someone from Kansas: Lawrence. It’s Lawrence.
The hometown of the Winchester brothers. I swear, half my American geography knowledge comes either from the show Supernatural, or fanfic about the show.
@Blake T Not sure where you got Topeka from, like I'm positive they went there but their hometown is Lawrence, Kansas.
They only left after Mary died.
Then about half of your geography and theology is wrong. They make so much up in that show. Not to mention it's filmed in Canada.
-From Wichita Kansas
I managed radio for years. You know: where we actually did show prep.
Wichita here.
Manhattan, Kansas… Now there’s a college town for you. Go Cats!
The lyrics are so intense....
'Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high
Though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say'
.....
'...If I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know....'
Absolutely outstanding!
Trueee bruhhhhh
When Kansas was in the recording session for this album, it was the night before their last day to close it out and I don't know if Kerry had this melody come to him or the lyric, the dude was VERY prolific as a writer of both lyric and melody. But it came to him so he wrote the lyrics down that night along with the basic melody for this.
He came in almost bashful about it saying he had an idea for one more song. This is the last day of the session. They worked this out that same day. The musicianship of this is amazing, vocals outstanding, guitar, drums and keyboard work all works of art. You listen to any element of this song, any piece of it and it's excellent. They recorded it that evening and that was a wrap. This song made them, and it happened in the last day of the session for this album, from Kerry's thoughts the night before.
"If I claim to be a wiseman, it surely means that I dont know"
This line has always stuck out to me since I was young.
The Graceful Savage Same.
That and "If you chose not to decide you still have made a choice." from 'Free Will' by Rush.
@@kburke1933 yep that one also stuck with me since a teen :)
If you think about it, it almost sounds like something Socrates would say
LikeMike - it means a truly wise man would know he doesn’t know everything or even most things.
Socrates might also have said "ARE YOU RUSHING OR DRAGGING?"
Shout out to Lawrence, Kansas for giving us Sam and Dean Winchester.
Stull, Kansas is a real place to. I've been through there a few times and it's creepy af
They started out as a Kansas bar band and just went on and up.
@@daviddorr9591 Idk what you would think is creepy unless it's the long roads with few towns as you were driving in the middle of the night. Having grown up in Kansas I think those long roads in the night are simply peaceful.
You beat me to it!!
awesome
If you watch the video to this song you'll see the lead singer not only singing his ass off, but playing that church organ and some damn bongos. This dude was doing the most. The definition of classic.
I'm kind of a fan of all the musicians in this band. They all do their part when they SHOULD do their part.
and the lead guitarist does the piano
2 dudes that recognize good music. It's really simple.
I've heard this song described perfectly this way. "The whole song is a hook."
Rick Beato did a segment on "What makes this song great" on this song and I believe that he said that. If you havent watched him, please do. He breaks the whole thing down and explains what you are hearing and how they do it. Good stuff.
It's based on the mythological Flight of Icarus.
Yes that is true...one big hook. Like 8 songs in one without being too busy.

A friend of mine was their tour manager, for many years. Back in the 90’s, he invited me and a couple of our other friends to one of the band’s concerts. We were given full access, and had the joy of actually meeting and talking with the band. Believe me when I tell you that they were the most genuine, humble, and kind people you could ever hope to meet. Being a fan, since I was a boy, in the 70’s, and then meeting them, only to realize what truly great guys they were, really reinforced my love for this legendary band.
I'm pretty sure by that time they had converted to Christianity which may explain their demeanor
George getting the holy spirit at 16:20 is the best reaction since Ryan's freakout over Rooster. This whole video is super fun.
I can hear the low rumble of a Chevy impala........
YESSSS!!!!

@Sebastian This song is used in every season finale of the show Supernatural, where the two protagonist brothers drive a '67 Chevy Impala.
@Sebastian nope, it's an old Chevy impala with a dude ina trench coat in the backseat.
Put the top down, turn the radio up and tear the freakin knob off!

I'd thumbs up, but we at 111 thumbs ups. Synchronicity biatches!!!!!!
Really hope they do this whole song in series final with recap
That's Dean's jam.
This song never gets old. It's truly one of the best rock songs ever written. Kerry Livgren was an amazing songwriter and Steve Walsh was one of the best singers in the 70's and 80's.
As I get older, I LOVE that younger people listen to and appreciate songs of the past! It is very heartening!~
The 70's decade was an era when you could just tune into your favorite FM rock station and hear one great song after another for hours on end ... gone forever.
It was fabulous. I sometimes would sit in my car just to listen and finish songs. The music was so good.😘😘😍😍
Radio is so compulsive because lets face it, we have to listen to a load of tosh in the hope that a brilliant track will surface, so when it does it feels like we have earned the honour of listening to it, so it feels so much more enjoyable. 👍
Bullshit. The music is still there today. A million songs at the tip of your finger. Anything from soft rock to satanic brutal death metal.
Y’all gotta remember this was recorded live to tape, no auto tune, no plug in guitar parts, and live vocals. When rock was rock
And, if I remember correctly, it was a last minute addition to the sessions.
Did not know that, thanks
The Kansas documentary was illuminating to say the least.
I'm a big Supernatural fan. I have to use a can to walk, I made it myself. It has Castiel wings, a Devils Trap, and a Demon Lock inlaided into the cane. Sup fans always notice it.
That’s awesome! It’s given me an idea to try to find a way to put some of those elements onto my wheelchair. Maybe the ends of the handles? The little round bits in the middle of the wheels? And some wings on the back...
Thanks for the idea!
I say this almost every time, and I'll keep on saying it. I get so much joy from watching you guys appreciating and enjoying music that, for many people, we've heard all of our lives. I love your open mindedness, love for great music - no matter its roots, and willingness to stretch your musical tastes. Thanks, again, gents. So much fun. Well done. 🙌

Fact. A Prog Rock Masterpiece!
I have loved this song send High School what's in the round 1978. Is is 2020 + I still love this song. Once I hear the beginning of the song I immediately feel better then what I felt before. And I could be feeling happy and this song comes on and I'm happier. Also Carry On Wayward Son is The Unofficial theme song to The TV series Supernatural. Supernatural is ending after 15 season. That's over 300 episodes. The 200 episode titled fanfiction they sing carry on my wayward son as a Ballard and it is absolutely beautiful.
Pretty subjective. Have you heard every song written? It's a great jam, no doubt.

Nobody has mentioned ZZ Top and I’m stunned. Cheap sunglasses, pearl necklace, the grange, so many great jams
"Decision or Collision" is their best heavy song, IMO. "Brown Sugar" is their best blues song, IMO. Either of these are far better than their radio singles (though those are also excellent).
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done.
Lay your weary head to rest

Kansas - what you get when musicians really know how to play their instruments!
Kansas was THE American prog band. They took British musical complexity and combined it with good old rock and boogie. Totally unique, IMO.
It's like Yes meets Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Perfect analogy Izzy!...never thought about that.

Dust in the wind, please...I’m 53 years old and still get emotional every time I hear it..one of the best songs ever written.
That was our senior song!
They were a semi-prog rock band. And, the drummer was one of the most "relaxed" rock drummers of all time. Very funky dude.
This song was written in one night. Even though they have been a band for quite a while when this song was made, it was actually their first hit record that took them to stardom.
Dust in the wind by Kansas is an incredible song, one of my all time favorites
A beautiful mix of sublime and nihilism.
You have to check out Dust In The Wind if you want that WOW factor
This song is beautiful and full of melancholy. You guys really need to do this one

Lol, I just finished season 10. 4 more to go then the final season.
Always loved this song... but when they play it on Supernatural it makes me so emotional ❤️
The lyrics were made for the characters of that show❤️❤️❤️
Kansas is more of a hard rock/ prog rock combo. They balance the two very well.
And just a little bit Southern Boogie/Bar.
No. They are satanic brutal death metal.
There are very few perfect songs but this is one of them. Everything about it is a journey, mirroring his own personal quest. A true gem in music.
When you have heard this song a million times like myself you truly forget how 🔥🔥🔥 it is. Timeless!
That's exactly what I was thinking. I take so much for granted when it comes to the music I grew up with.
Same. I tend to find myself skipping this song when it comes up on my Spotify thinking it's old hat. It's been a while since I've really appreciated it.
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
This is clasic!
Yeah, honestly anything off the Who's Next record would be great
You can't play Who songs on YT, they get instantly blocked/pulled I believe.
They reacted to Baba O'Riley and began to hear Won't Get Fooled Again (guess it was on patreon). But I would very much like a reaction to the whole song.
I grew up on great bands like Kansas, Boston, Chicago,, ect all these bands are the essence of classic rock!!
One of my 7 year old favorite songs. He sings along every time. Lol.
This is why I like watching reactions from guys like you. You take a song I've probably heard a thousand times and made it fresh again. Your energy and enthusiasm for this song is infectious.
As someone who grew up on a steady diet of classic rock, it was incredibly entertaining to see this. Fresh ears really help me reflect on how amazing this song actually is.

Twenty one pilots uses them a lot, Tyler is an amazing musician but I agree it's not used much outside of them and some metal bands
Also, the Animals "House of the Rising Sun".
Burning for you by Blue Oyster Cult is definitely a banger

Hardcore Kansas fan here. They're my all-time favorite band, and Carry On is my all-time favorite rock song. Most people know Dust in the Wind, and a few others know Point of Know Return. But they have a lot of songs, and most of them are worth checking out, not just the ones people know.
Kerry Livgren wrote the song (Steve Walsh was the singer/keyboardist), and he was definitely on a spiritual search. Many of their songs from their first few albums had songs about searching. Livgren eventually became a Christian, so he found the answers he was searching for.
But a little more background info about this song, it's actually sort of a part 3 of a trilogy of songs. If you listen to their previous album, Masque, the last two songs on that album are Mysteries and Mayhem, and The Pinnacle. The end of Mysteries and Mayhem fades out, and then The Pinnacle starts with the same riff that Mysteries and Mayhem faded out on (though a little slower). And then the last verse of The Pinnacle contains the lyrics "I stood where no man goes/Above the din I rose". Then Carry On's first verse begins, "Once I rose above the noise and confusion", and of course, the word "din" means "a loud, confused noise". So Carry On sort of picks up where The Pinnacle left off.
Kansas was the best.......The Wall is my fave....saw them in Rhode Island been listening to them since I was 10.....45 years and never gets old
"The Pinnacle", "Icarus (Born on Wings of Steel)", "Miracles Out of Nowhere", "The Wall", "Closet Chronicles", "Song For America", "Apercu", "Hopelessly Human", "Magnum Opus", "Lamplight Symphony", "On the Other Side", "Mysteries and Mayhem", and so many more great masterpieces.
Except he didn't have the lyrics of this song until the LAST night of their recording session for this album. In fact it wasn't in his head at ALL until the last night of this recording session, so one song didn't lead to the other. He wrote lyrics as it came to him, so you could envision it that way, but that's not how it happened.
And to show how outstanding of a bad they were, after Kerry wrote the lyrics down the night before the last day of the session, he went in the next day with basic melodies and the lyrics, they jammed with it that day, recorded it that evening, and all the parts of this are amazing.
And this is from their documentary. It's on YT, and you can give it a watch.
Man, love how you guys have an authentic response to great music! I've been a Kansas fan since 1976 (the year Leftoverture was released). Their music doesn't age, it's SO timeless. Carry on my wayward son is played as the intro to every season finale of the TV show Supernatural and also in the 200th episode they do a Supernatural Musical that plays this song in a new and interesting way.

@@taniele84 Hi, this song came out in 1978. They were still putting 8 track players in cars although cassettes were more popular by then. Internet did not exist so there was no Sirius, Pandora or You Tube. The number 1 way to listen to music was radio. As a 22 y/o dude in '78 I listened to a couple of the local FM rock stations. When Dust In The Wind came out it fit into multiple categories and was played on multiple stations and played and played and played some more. DITW is a very good song and I know that people love it. I'm a pretty big Kansas fan but prefer the long epic proggy tunes more. Those were not radio friendly in '78. Sorry for the rambling.

"Dust in the Wind" is their other big hit. "Miracles out of Nowhere" is quintessential. If you want a deep cut, I recommend "Hopelessly Human". "Magnum Opus" is the most prog thing ever.
Go back one album to Masque, listen to it on with really good and powerful speakers or excellent headset. Get yourself in a quiet mindset before you do, do whatever to just relax and kick back into the music. You'll hear components of these later albums in it. It's also more on the prog rock side in different songs.
Cheyenne Anthem is one that always makes my heart bleed. But it's another one where you need to calm yourself down and just listen without any kind of judgement while listening. Just saw them in Savannah, Georgia in January 2020. Absolutlely awesome show. Great evening. All ages on their feet!
Don't forget "Dust In The Wind."

John Douglas Racing Video I think Foreplay / Long Time is pretty prog too.
I honestly never thought of this song as prog rock, still can't see it as other than arena.
