We recommend that you do that before your first coffee of the day. It helps to evacuate the water that remains in the machine and to warm it. However, if you do not do it, you will not face issues as long as you descale the machine frequently and clean the platter where the capsules is pierced. Have a very pleasant day !
How do I stop water overflowing without dispensing much of the coffee , and how do i clean the coffee residue i can feel near the pins that puncture the pods?

This will allow your capsules to brew the correct volume. Use a soft damp cloth inside the capsule chamber to remove excess coffee grinds, being careful of the pin that punctures your capsules.
