There is no evidence that depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain involving serotonin.
It has been found that SSRIs can temporarily help increase serotonin in the brain. However, drug trials have shown that these anti-depressants were almost indistinguishable from the placebo in treating depression.
SSRIs come with a lot of side effects, including serious side effects involving the sex organs. Psychiatric drugs also come with a black box warning, meaning there is a high risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
Does depression cause body problems, or do body problems cause depression? I think it could be both-but we’re going to focus on the body problems and deficiencies that could cause depression.
    Potential causes of depression:
    1. Insomnia
    2. Chronic fatigue
    3. Stress
    4. Nutritional deficiencies (vitamin D, vitamin B12, vitamin B1, magnesium, DHA)
    5. Lack of exercise

I was raised by a cruel, toxic mother, who has multiple Cluster B traits: Highly manipulative, selfish, lacks empathy, no insight, extremely defensive… on it goes. I’ve lived with depression and anxiety my entire life. I had to move back home as an adult and lived with her another 10 years. She’s interfered in my life and destroyed relationships, made me think I was going crazy. Depression and anxiety are often part of C-PTSD, and a pill can’t fix it.

We all makes mistakes one way or the other in life, no one makes 100% right decisions all the time, even those you think have the best life have their own problems too. the saying that " life is not a bed of rose's" is true. Though it's difficult, but the best way to love yourself is a total acceptance of what is, make changes to what can be changed and accept what you can not change, try to focus on the present moment that is the "now" (it's not an easy practice though) it's going to take practice, the "now" is all that matters in life, you cannot turn back the hands of time, make the best of the "now" the present moment, and understand that true happiness comes from within you and not outside of you, if you depend on the outside to be happy then you will mostly be disappointed. In the end, nothing in life is permanent, not even the life we have.

It turns out that I was living in an insane world and didn't know how insane it is. When I figured it out about 30 years ago, my depression forever ended. Mainly I could not wake up in the morning and I had little kids and I thought there was something wrong with me so I went to the doctor and was diagnosed and given an antidepressant which I took for 6 months it worked and then I went off it in favor of light therapy because I had studied in the meantime what was going on and realized I needed to go outside whether it was rain or shine. I haven’t been on antidepressants for over a decade, but I did take them for 10 years, and they were a lifesaver. Side effects went away after 2 weeks. I also have a relative that was severely depressed, with cptsd & anxiety and was in a very bad state for a few years- once they started on an SNRI their severe depression and anxiety was relieved- no side effects.
While I do believe there are natural remedies for depression, I think it’s wrong to say antidepressants are always bad.
Some people are so severely depressed they can’t even handle the information in this video- cognitively. They may not have the ability to do all of these things or find a dr or naturopath to help. Antidepressants can HELP to get you to a place where you can function and then do all of this.
A symptom of major depression is having problems with cognition, organization, etc. so the amount of information in this video can’t help them.

They taught me so many skills I joined a fitness program and cut out sugar i stopped negative talk to people I wrote in a diary, drank water got the proper sleep and my life completely changed!! I’m now a huge advocate for these things, I also set a goal just one goal at a time and then focus day by day not looking to far ahead.
I’m slowly going back to my old ways but now I feel like I have an escape and I have control again on how to stop it. I don’t wish depression on anyone!! It’s such a dark dark place and when I even think about being in that state of mind I get chills

I was on depression drugs more than twenty years! I was able to get off of them by changing the following. 1. Cut out processed foods and processed sugar. 2. Dealt with the unforgivness in my heart towards others and developed safe people in my life/removing the toxic people 3. Separated my self from negative influences in my life such as television, nightly news. Etc. 4. Learned to take control of the toxic thoughts unconsciously running through my mind and replacing them with empowering thoughts. This is possible for anyone, but it will take time and tremendous effort. 😎

I understand them, because I was like them just moments (years) ago. I believe that I can do it and so they can of course do it too. Therefore I am going to be patient and wait till they choose to heal. I can only live in hope, detachment and patience If I choose to live in knowing. It’s still depressing, and it’s supposed to be.

I have severe panic attacks and depression since my earliest child hood memories. I didn't know what it was, because I couldn't put what I felt into words.l was hospitalized several times for severe depression anxiety and psychosis. I was treated with medication and counseling for years . After finding the correct medications my symptoms subsided and I was able to function normally , working eating sleeping. I was in tremendous mental anguish, before medication, where I literally didn't want to live , the pain in my brain was constant and severe. I feel blessed I no longer have any episodes, and I live a normal functioning life now. I truly wish I didn't have to take medication, I suffer from all the sexual side effects you mentioned, but the trade off is worth being in pain and functional. I don't believe I would be alive if I wasn't prescribed medication. It is a double edged sword , side effects vs being bedridden but for me the risks outweigh the non qualify of life I lived. Again I pray to God there will be a cure , I don't like the side effects but it's better than the pain and lack of a non functional existence.

I suffered with depression at its worst post partum. In my fifties I was finally diagnosed with anxiety. The anxiolytic I was prescribed worked marvelously. I find that doctors do not know exactly what it feels like to feel down every day , every minute and every second of the day. I had a wonderful pharmacist who advised on what to expect as he had personal experience and he was bang on. People with anxiety often experience depression as well. Asking a person at their lowest to start studying the science behind the foods they are eating is only adding to their anxiety. I know I developed a problem with food in the process.

Actually, as someone who was desperate and at their lowest, struggling with severe panic disorder and anxiety, overwhelming grief from multiple losses, and trying to heal my body from serotonin overdose thanks to a pharma happy Dr and Prozac, this is exactly the type of information I needed and that helped me on my path to healing. If l wouldn’t have had information like this I’d be addicted to benzos, still suffering from multiple panic attacks a day, not sleeping and terrified. Not everyone is on the same path as you.

I have had depression and anxiety for years, since childhood, but it was undiagnosed then.
I tried to avoid medication for many, many years, but when I felt that I could not go on another day, I went to a psychologist and got a diagnosis. Then a psychiatrist prescribed my medication, and I started taking it some years ago (one is an SSRI) and I feel WORLDS better now. I started feeling better about 6 weeks after starting my medication.
So irrespective of whether there is 'evidence' of it or not, I can only speak from my own personal experience, and I can clearly say that if it had not been for my medication, I may have decided to check out a ling time ago, and might not have been here today.

I would definitely take a look at the ‘potential’ causes of depression, but I would also look at the spiritual effects on us. Many years ago after having given birth to my second child, I began to feel a kind of depression coming on me. I have felt I was heading down that rabbit hole and I couldn’t understand why. I realized that I had two children to look after, and could not afford to be depressed. I made a statement at that time that I did not have the ‘luxury’ to be depressed. I made that statement in my mind and acted accordingly and chose not to be depressed. This is not to minimize or put down anyone that has been through depression, and I know plenty of people who have, but for me this was how I felt and how I still feel. If you talk to people who are depressed they are incredibly focused on what is going on with them and I think that sometimes we need to take that focus off of ourselves and put it onto others and how we can help others. I think you will find that depression will lift, if you continually do this.
is not to put down or minimize what
3:18 others have been going through but only what I was going through.

Don’t ever resort to a depressant - medicine and or alcohol - to alleviate your cloudy days and really that’s what they are , and it’s only in retrospect, you will realize that. Sun shines but to set again so you will be sad but dark night mood will see the sun rise again…so it’s all a temporary fleeting state. Believe me, I am going through some really tough time but I will come out of it with the will of God who renders these down necessary for my self and soul to grow and gain widsom. If i listen to heavy metal or gangster rap this effects by brain. If i'm eating terrible diet that of course effects my brain . Ignoring these things + even more things is directly the persons fault. It's directly linked to brain deteorration and the byproduct are things like depression . anxiety / paranoia etc. Bearing no responsibility is just stupid. Interesting.
I've been on SSRIs for 14 years, and they completely changed my life for the better.
Once I got on them, I realized I'd been living in what I refer to as "a grey zone of depression" for about 5 years. I wasn't down enough for alarm, but I constantly struggled with mood problems, and never really felt anything better than ok.
I do have some side effects, but those could also be related to being an everyday all day pot smoker for for 15 years prior to stopping.
Either way, I don't think I'd still be here if it wasn't for the pills, so I'm very grateful for them.

A lot of people go on antidepressants or dopamine meds to help re-pattern their brain and habits, and then go off after a few years or once theyre done say, being a stressed out single parent to little kids or out of a traumatic situation etc Then again there are people that go through trauma or ppd etc and stay sick for years or decades because they refuse to get medicated Theres no need for that, do all you can to help yourself

I have been a full-time therapist for 27 years. Depression is almost always caused by loss, failure, shattered dreams, disillusion or a combination.
The cure for depression is acceptance, gratitude, nature, physical exertion and loving, non directive, support. Sympathy is worth much more than just empathy. Writing out your thoughts and/or story can also help with depression, loss and heartbreak. Acceptance is key. Any creative activity, if possible, like art, poetry or music will help - sometimes a new type is the only one that may appeal.

I gained 10 pounds over holidays and just around my mid cycle out of the double period I got hit with such intense anxiety and depression. It was debilitating and scary. I realized something was not right as I always felt a dark cloud over me. I was going through extreme insomnia too. No sleep aid worked except for melatonin. I immediately got back on my doctor prescribed vit D, and then bought fish oil, magnesium and victim B complex. I also got almond milk for calcium. My hubby also bought us an affordable treadmill and after a few day a of running a mile a day and all my supplements, I feel so much like my old self. Seriously, depression and anxiety is not fun. I would not wish it on anyone. I got up early every morning to pray and I begged God for a solution. I’m still not 100% better, but I am much much better now. Maybe like 2-5% is still left. I think one extra factor is movement. This can refer to exercise (which'll helps by releasing endorphins, distracting one from worries, rewiring dopaminergic reward systems, improving sleep quality & ability of the parasympathetic nervous system to recover from stress, & create a constructive daily habit which leads to a feeling of progress from witnessing positive results) or moving toward achieving one's goals in learning, skill acquisition, work placement, pay, social sphere, & character development etc. I believe if you take having a sense of purpose away from the happiest, most positive & content person in the world they'll become depressed. Because happiness isn't about what you have but seeing what you've accomplished; being able to attribute some good thing in this world to yourself and say: I did that! And to be able to look forward to continue achieving similarly wonderful things.

It’s the meaning of “happiness” today that’s the problem. It used to mean “contentment”, which is how you used it. For many today, it means “pleasure”.
And pleasure is temporary. Ask a person what makes them happy? Most will tell you something that is actually pleasurable and has nothing to do with contentment - video games, movies, eating ice cream, etc.
And if a person is not happy, they must be depressed.

Lost all sense of purpose and meaning through a very traumatic experience with an employer that turned on me overnight for questioning their medical mandate . Bullied and gaslit for almost months while they trued to get me to resign, then terminated. Lost an executive career and my home. It’s been almost 2 years and the horror, grief and loss continue to wash over me in waves.

Maybe doc berg will see this comment. You recently posted a video about being censored and how the algorithm does not recommend certain videos. However, I have been seeing your videos more frequently in my feed, especially this year on video subjects such as keto. It is my hope that this will make a difference because I do not want you to be silenced. Your videos are very useful and honest 😊

LONLINESS - Feeling alone and no human contact, friends, .... Ask someone who is suffering if they have any friends that they actually see in person. It's been haunting me for a couple years now. Started out with the isolation of Covid. I had never experienced this kind of sadness in my life .... and it still has it's hold on me. Not a day goes by where I don't feel the need to cry.

Learn self hypnosis trust me it really helps so much on looking at life differently no matter what situation you’re in. I have been alone all my life even before covid I had a few traumatic experience which made me completely withdraw from society practically all my life I also developed ptsd in the past but because those symptoms have gone thank gone I forget how bad it used to be, and for a long time was depressed I used to get reoccurring nightmares which would haunt me and I would wake up in dread everyday as if I was reliving those feelings, it’s because I didn’t fully let go of my past and the meanings I was giving it. I worked on myself a lot, what I’ve recently been doing is self hypnosis and it can change your whole life around!!! It starts with self concept. The problem is not you being alone, I know it feels good to have company, but you don’t have to feel like crap about your situation, you don’t have to make it mean anything about you and when you change how you feel about the situation the situation changes. Self hypnosis is an excellent tool to learn I highly recommend it!!
I think I was depressed and had those negative feelings because all those things that happened in my past that was unpleasant I was making it mean something about me when I changed the meaning I no longer felt the heavy burden and felt free. Self concept is key! Change your self concept change the way you feel change your life! Self hypnosis! Or even going to a credible certified hypnotist would actuallly be so much more powerful

Thank you Dr. Berg for this clear overview. I reccognize all this is true due to personal experience. I just had to realize I handle sugar extremely bad. I eat for my gut now, chronic constipation and diarrhea is gone, skin iching is gone, building up stomach acid removes 37 year long reflux problems, stress is reduced and calmness in highly stressed situations is so great to enjoy (I work as a dispatcher at an airport). Much depression and chronic fatigue is gone. My overall energy is increasing. I'd also like to add to all this Dr. Berg is saying, that working your way out of depression is also neccessary; You need to set GOALS, you need to wok with your self esteem, build yourself up, engage yourself in activities that perfect your life in your desired directions. Dream and work yourself toward those dreams, make a plan how to get there. Focus every day on your goals and plans, be creative. Only say good things to yourself, never blame the things you miss doing - don't even care about them, only celebrate your progress, and create the best life you can right now. All the best.
