- Having the ignition timing set up and adjusted properly is an often-overlooked maintenance procedure that ensures your 2 stroke dirt bike engine stays operating at peak performance. In this video, Charles show how to set ignition timing on a 2 stroke dirt bike using the three most common ignition system setups found on todays off-road motorcycles.

I do not own a 2 stroke, but i wanted to say that i love these videos about bike mechanics. Top notch explanations and editing!
Charles & team, you're killing it!
Hope you'll keep them coming FOREVER.
Lol
Thanks for sharing very helpful
Thanks for the very easy to follow along video! Im going to go time my yz250 now! I have some destination issues I'm hoping this will solve.
AWESOME THANKS
Excellent video
Love you vids man
What year did they start to be able to do this stuff on ?
You don’t no how much you help me 👍🏻
Me?
In 400meter race ignetion timing on magneto coil plate witch marking want to set sir
I need help with the stop engine button where it connects in the left side my lil brother pull on it and all the wires are out
Rocky mountain is the best motocross organization in the world
I’m having trouble timing my 05 ttr le. I line up the cam sprocket to the notch and the flywheel to the case mark but when I turn it over it never lines up. I’ve done it over but the timing doesn’t seem to line up. Idk what to do..
Does anyone happen to know if this is the same for a rm85
What ist timing for ktm sx 65 2006? I cant find
1999 250 Polaris 2 stroke ignition timing on base stator plate
Anyone got a idea where I can buy a kit to time a husky wr125
Got a yz250, Could retarding ignition timing cause exhaust knocking in expansion chamber aka pipe bang on decel?
NICE UPDATE USING THE DAMN SERVICE MANUAL FOR EXMAPLES!!!! A1 top notch give the video editing guy a raise
Would you be able to set up the timing when the engine is outside of the bike frame but fully rebuilt?
yes of course
Great video! I still am having problems with this 1979 Yamaha DT100F I have I can’t get it to run right. I’ve replaced just about everything in the carb including the float needle, seat, float, and replaced necessary jets to OEM and soaked the carb and sprayed it with carb cleaner and compressed air and it still doesn’t run right. I dont see any visible air leaks but they say to use brake parts cleaner or wd40 but you can’t test for air leaks if it doesn’t run right if at all and you can’t get it to run right if you have an air leak so a loop hole there…
I’ve also replaced every single gasket and rebuilt my top end and it has 120 psi compression at a recommended 105 compression so that’s not the issue. It has the tendency to flood which doesn’t sound right ive messed with every single thing on the carb and it either gets too much or nothing at all.
I’m really stuck on this one. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks!
when you say it doesnt run just right, what do you mean. does it try to start and then die, or nothing at all?
@@devyn5919 depends. Usually it will only start with choke and then die after a couple seconds. Then if I turn off choke and go wide open throttle it fires right up and then depends sometimes it’ll go for 30 seconds other times it’ll go for 5. I’m thinking it’s an air leak and I plan to pressure test it?
But yes. It will run but not for long. It does not idle and is very very finicky and recently I’ve had tough times starting it at all. The carb has been soaked and cleaned throughout and most internal carb parts have been replaced
@@moddingdudes7055 since it only starts on wide open throttle and choke, it sounds like it wants fuel. do you have the carburetor jetted correctly? if it can start then it will rev higher if its an air leak. have u looked for it on your ignition side crank seal?
@@devyn5919 I’ve replaced that seal as well. I think I’m gonna leak down test it for air leaks since the head gasket was giving me problems previously. I may have to give it a resurface
Is It A Reed Valve Intake? Also Check The Intake Boot
Does advancing the timing help throttle response? On chainsaws it seems to help with that? This is comparing apples to oranges I know, but was just wondering!
Yeah, the bike will feel a little more snappy down low, but you're going to sacrifice some top end power. -Charles
At 6:10 when you tightened the 1st screw I believe the stator slightly shifted on you that's why you were a hair off
hello, tell me?yz250 2t 2013 I set the ignition according to the manual, the marks match, but when working at speed, the ignition goes to later, but it should be earlier, I disconnect the connectors from the carburetor, the ignition does not change at speed
The ignition should "advance" at higher rpm's. Are you using a timing light? Usually there are two marks on the flywheel to help you see if the advance is correct. Double check the manual. -Charles
If the timing line on the flywheel is around 1 inch past the stator line. The woodruff key is perfect brand new oem crank. What would the issue be ? On a ktm 85 ?
I was also wondering this on my yz85 wondering if the keyway was machined in wrong spot on crankshaft
Just a heads up I don’t think that Cr85s have a timing mech and it’s just a bolt on as long as the woodruff key is aligned
i realize Im kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream new movies online?
@Toby Houston I would suggest FlixZone. Just search on google for it :)
@Jermaine Ricky Yea, I have been watching on Flixzone for since april myself :)
@Jermaine Ricky thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I really appreciate it!
@Toby Houston glad I could help xD
Damn it. I didn’t even know 2 strokes had timing issues.
Great vídeo and great machanic 🔥
Thanks for watching! 👍
in our workshop we are inspired by you
we hope one day to reach your level
@@rmatvmc this is our workshop
I had a quick question for you . I just rebuilt the top end on my kx250 2 stroke all stock . I hear what i believe is detonation ping when only in power band . Timing is standard ( middle line) brand new spark in it . Would adjusting the timing fix this ? If so do i retard or advance the timing? Opened up the head and there is no metal or anything to ignite the gas before it should . Appreciate the help thank you !
Maybe you are going to lean and that it is making the detonations, also it is important to measure the squish (base gasket).
Do you need the Kx at top dead center for the timing
No you do not need to be a TDC to set the ignition timing on your KX.
@@rmatvmc Thanks
Does a yamaha it490 have a timing mark?
Yes your bike should have timing marks similar to the bike shown in this video.
@@rmatvmc
Thanks
Would timing affect how the bike revs with a fast hand full flick? Most bikes being set up for lower grade fuels. To make it fire better with higher ron fuel, would you need to advance or retard timings?
It reacts to your throttle better with advanced ignition timing. But better over rev with retarded ignition timing. You should advance the timing as then the higher octane fuel will burn earlier. Higher octane fuel burns slower than lower octane fuel.
How do you get a two stroke to two step?
There are no 2 stroke dirt bikes with launch control at this time. Your best bet is practicing throttle/clutch control and maybe looking into a holeshot device to help your starts.
@@rmatvmc Is it absolutely necessary to bleed your fork oil before every ride.
TIMIMG?
Good catch!
As far as adjusting your timing to compliment your mods....easier said than done. I have a 97 cr80. The stator is fixed and completely hidden underneath the magneto rotor. Wtf?
The old cr80 stator isn’t adjustable, the bolt holes are circle rather then oval
A tool to tell you tdc 😂
They sell a "dirtbike" tool for eveything Haha
That's not what the tool is for. The spark needs to happen before the piston reaches TDC, that's why the tool is used to set piston height before TDC. Sorry if that was confusing. -Charles
