    17:16 There is a good update to this! Ohio passed “The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety”! Reproductive rights, including abortion, are now protected in the state constitution!
    It was incredibly tragic a 10 year old had to go through this, and my heart breaks for her still, but it’s one of the major reasons this was able to pass.

      Ohio is actually much more moderate than you might think, hence why that amendment passed by such a large margin. The only reason our state government is so republican is because of gerrymandering that almost certainly violates the constitution (according to Ohio’s Supreme Court). The only reason it’s still like this is because a trump-appointed federal judge overruled our state constitution.

    I'm not sure about the context, but technically the quote saying "Martin Luther died 319 years before the KKK was a thing" is actually correct. The person responding to it appears to be the ConfidentlyIncorrect one.
    Martin Luther was a German priest who lived from 1483-1546. He is best known as the central figure around the Protestant Reformation (and is who Lutheranism is named after). He had absolutely nothing to do with American Civil Rights or the KKK (when he was alive, the United States didn't even technically exist yet).
    Martin Luther *King Jr.* (1929-1968) was a completely different person, who was just named (indirectly) after the original Martin Luther. He was the one who fought for civil rights and had run-ins with people like the KKK (several centuries after the original Martin Luther died in Germany).
    (Many people also forget that Martin Luther King (1899-1984, aka "Martin Luther King Sr.") is also a distinct person too. He was the father of Martin Luther King Jr. and was also a prominent Baptist minister and an early figure in the US Civil Rights movement himself.)

      Funny enough, the Martin Luther King name was adopted by King senior who was originally named Michael. And named his first son after himself in a move so American it boggles my mind.
      Anyway, Michael King Sr. visited Germany in 1934 and became fascinated with Martin Luther, prompting him to adopt the name as a symbol of powerful protest.
      Anyway, very good year to visit Germany for reasons that are very unrelated to the NAZIS.
      King Jr. later adopted the name from his father who had also been a pastor and organized civil rights protests.

While we all used to think that our skin going wrinkly and soggy when wet for long periods was just to try and get more grip + oversaturated from the water, there's actually much more to it than that. Research into people with nerve damage has shown that for those who have ND, those areas of the skin don't get wrinkly when wet. This has lead scientific researchers to suspect that the wrinkling of skin when wet may actually be a nervous response to the presence of lots of liquid around us rather than an osmotic response!

No gluten because I was allergic to wheat, and no junk or storebought food even if there was nothing I was allergic to on the label because they would always find a way to put something in there that made me break out in hives and hide it under "natural and artificial flavors." My diet has changed extremely since I grew out of my allergies but my adhd hasn't so yeah, I don't think they're linked.

    More importantly, QR codes are generally not assigned, they are generated from the data you wish to encode. They contain the data directly, unlike barcodes which just store a number. Generating a qr code does not remove it from the pool of available codes, so as long as the data you are storing is smaller than it's capacity, you are all right. In other words it is literally impossible to run out of codes because they are not consumed in any way, with only a theoretical exception.

    As someone with ADHD, that person has it completely backwards. ADHD affects your diet, not the other way around. It makes self-discipline and control of impulses harder, which is why addiction is so common among people with the condition. Luckily, I don't drink alcohol or do party drugs so that's not an issue for me. However, I am struggling with portion control and not eating too many snacks, especially when combined with my anxiety medication, which has weight gain as one of its side effects. Also, ADHD is one of the most natural (in terms of the nature vs nurture debate) mental illnesses. It's largely a hereditary thing and/or caused in the womb. So if no one ever makes concessions, nothing will ever get done. The person scheduling people to produce a product to sell to make revanue to meet liabilities like preferred investor dividends, debts, and payroll to employ people to produce a product to sell needs to know how much prduction they can expect from you and if the companies incurred cost of employing a person is less than the return on the increased production from adding another employee. Also, due to labor regulations they have to pay you a certain amount for any labor, on top of whatever the market cost of your productive skill set is. Also also, its not fair for Mark to always have to be called in as the only person willing to answer the manager calls on his unscheduled day when you dont show up, except they are running up against the consecutive days they are legally allowed to have a single person on the clock. There are a minimum number of employees needed to run the shop, if there is less than that number might as well not open that day. The increased cost of Marks over time, the uncertainty of your ability to come in, the cost of keeping someone on the roster who is no producing enough to cover their cost of employment , the productivity losses......Ya think maybe you can suck it up, grow a skin, and just come in for your 4hr shift already? Otherwise, they are not the asshole for firing you, they are the asshole for their margins being so thin. You are the asshole for being unreliable, you are not the asshole for having a condition that doesnt work on a schedule.
      And Im a high dose ADD HD (yeah, we made the distinction back in the day) kid from the 80s/90s. Even I easily recognize the valid points on both sides and think both of them need to suck it up. And they are a business, they have every right to let someone go who is problematic. Get over it. Try actually running one some time. It makes perfect sense. The real "cheat" in the "median employee makes $100k" figures is that the low-paid workers who make the company's business possible aren't counted -- they're either contractors individually or they work for a company that the "high-paying" company pays for services (e.g. facilities, infrastructure maintenance, etc.). It's less easily hackable than mean salary numbers, but it still doesn't give a complete picture.

      FYI: "mean" and "median" aren't the same thing. Jeff Bezos walks into the room, and the mean income of every person in the room skyrockets … but the median income only moves a bit, it may not move at all.
      "mean" == the average
      "median" == middle of the distribution == "Sort 'em all, then find the one at the middle of the (sorted) list. That's the median value."
      The median is a _much_ better measure of central tendency when you're dealing with widely scattered values or with values that have a built in constraint.

    • @wta1518
      @wta1518 Před rokem +3

      @@John_Weiss Median is still the average. There are 3 different types of averages: mean, median, and mode. Mean is the sum of the values divided by the number of values. It’s more accurate than median except when there are outliers, which can throw off the amount. Median is simply the middle value (or the mean of the 2 middle values if there is an even number of values). It’s less accurate, but more resistant to outliers. Mode is usually not for numerical data, as it is the most common value. For example, if 5 people said that their favorite color was blue, 3 said red, and 1 said green, the mode would be blue.

    As someone who’s on the autism spectrum, that post on ADHD made me more infuriated than I’ve ever felt before from any post about what someone thinks ADHD/autism is.
    Not only was that person claiming that it’s something that people with ADHD need to “fix”, but they also said that it’s something caused by diet and hormones.
    If you think that a developmental disorder like ADHD/autism is caused by your diet, you’re the one who needs to fix your diet and mind.

Hopefully, it inspires this generation of kids to pick up the books and have that small connection to the kids from the 80's and 90's a shared interest with a parent is an amazing thing. Additionally, there are wonderful illustrations or interactive versions of the books now that are perfect for young children to Captivate and spark the love of books. Indeed. The general thrust of it was correct, but we've discovered several more methods of selection besides natural and sexual. We've discovered genetic drift, which is when there are no selection pressures at all, so genes are free to express in whatever direction without significant consequence. We've discovered how genetics work, which is something Darwin actually did get wrong. Mendel was a contemporary of Darwin, but they never managed to collaborate, due to the language barrier (Darwin actually had a letter from Mendel in his desk when he died, but it was in German, so he couldn't read it).
      Science moves on, but Creationism is stuck in the past, and does not change it's doctrine. However wrong it is, it will forever remain, but science is consistently improving, and becoming more accurate over time.

    17:15 Uncomfortable fact I learned recently: While puberty normally occurs after age 11-13, it can and will be triggered early in the event of frequent sexual activity. Young girls who get pregnant are able to do so only because they are being regularly abused, not just the one event that gets them pregnant.

      Kinda makes sense. Brain just going like “there’s sex going on an awful lot for someone that isn’t sexually mature yet… did I miss a memo?! I must be running late, I gotta catch up!”
      Sorry to make light of the situation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it basically works like that. I mean on a smaller scale that’s what happens when you have an inconsistent diet and gain weight. Brain sees you eating seemingly at random and goes “must be lean times ahead if they’re not able to eat on a schedule, better hang on to some of these calories just in case”
      Brain sees something that isn’t normal and decides it’s some kind of survival emergency and tries to adapt.
