    13:09 As someone who miscarried a rape baby in the early 90's, men like that were typical of the time. I was blamed and shamed for both the rape and the miscarriage from nearly every corner. I should have not worn attractive clothing (a red sweater and black jeans were what I was wearing). I shouldn't have worn makeup. I shouldn't walk so femininely. Etc etc. Meanwhile the man who did the raping was mostly excused as I was a very busty teenage girl at the time so clearly he couldn't help himself. The emphasis was nearly always what a woman should have done differently and never on the man controlling himself. Seeing this is like listening to excuses as to why rape is ok sometimes. Makes me sad this kind of mentality is still alive and well today.

      That's horrifying. I'm so, so very sorry. You deserved love, support, acceptance, and to see your r+pist held accountable.
      I know that you know this, but _none of the ways you were abused were your fault. Period. It also wasn't your fault that the pregnancy began and ended as it did._
      I mean this with complete honesty, my whole heart, and zero condescension . . . I'm enormously proud of you for your strength, your wisdom, and everything it's taken you to get through to today. (We don't often tell other adults that we're proud of them. From my own observations, it's something that most of us need to hear more often. So, I've decided to ignore the social mores that would make my words into anything other than a genuine expression of admiration, and I'm telling people when I feel proud of them.) You survived absolutely devastating attacks on your body, psyche, reputation, sexuality, future, freedom, and so much more; lost what should have been a young adulthood filled with joyful learning experiences and growth at _your_ speed; dealt with the beginning and ending of a pregnancy that I can only imagine would have come with wild extremes of emotion; pulled your shattered pieces back together; are able to share your story; and you know that everything about your r+pe and people's reactions in the aftermath were atrocious. I admire you immensely. 💙

    To me the best analogy for “losing weight is fatphobic” is that it’s like saying “being a housewife is antifeminist.” The whole point is supposed to be that people should be free to do what they want to do and be what they want to be without judgement. We should be doing away with rules entirely, not exchanging the old rules for new ones.

      Precisely! And with the whole "fat phobic" thing with losing weight is doesn't even make sense. You want to (depends on the situation) better yourself by losing a few pounds to feel more comfortable in your body or to better your health. We should be congratulating people for living how they feel comfortable, whether that's working to loose weight or get fitter, or choosing not to work towards owing weight and being comfortable in your body as it is. All is good as long as you're not putting down others for how they chose to live

      Ugh I'm really sorry there are Christians like that out there that all of you have to deal with, I go to a Christian school and am apart of a Christian family and they're all pretty chill imo, but some of the stories out there are just wild and I feel so bad for everyone who has to put up with it, sometimes it feels like some Christians just read the SparkNotes of the bible or something and think they're automatically pros and know everything. We're really not supposed to and we're supposed to be the version showed in the video. 1 Corinthians 5:12
      12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? So ya, this isn't supposed to be preachy or anything, but again I'm sorry you guys need to deal with the hypocrites of Christianity and I know it's cold comfort but they're probably losing quite a few brownie points with God
      Edit: not meaning for this to be a plug for Christianity at all, just an apology + verse that may just win you an argument about ignorant Christian and get them to leave you alone (that last partly is very likely wishful thinking on my naïve self but maybe if could if the Christian has a decent character and is just going off of what Christian elders/peers think)

    • @chanterelle483
      @chanterelle483 Před 10 měsíci +22

      Yes, they can. When a liver wants to get rid of birth control, it releases it into intestines after attaching some other molecule to it to prevent it from re-absorbing. But gut bacteria often break that molecule off, so it reabsorbs and went through that cycle again and again and is effective for this entire time. When you take strong antibiotics, it wipes out the gut bacteria, they can't do this and the birth control gets excreted much sooner, making it less effective. It's pretty crazy :o
      Btw. many other medications and some herbs, like St John's Wort, can also negate the effects of birth control (but it's different mechanism). If you take birth control and need to add other meds, please always inform yourself about it. Make sure that your doctors know about the combination and they approve. Most birth control fails are caused by improper use, so be careful.

      Most antibiotics are FINE to take with birth control. A FEW (like rifampin) can make your birth control less effective. But the vast majority of common antibiotics don't negate birth control. Forgetting a pill is a MUCH more common cause of an oops pregnancy. I am a doctor who prescribed both. Talk to your doctor if you have questions...

    Whenever I have problems with religious people, it's one of three things:
    - they are imposing their religious restrictions on me
    - they are giving me or someone ele unwanted advice about something sensitive (i.e. "depressed? you need god!")
    - they are discriminating someone in the name of religion
    if you're religious and don't do any of these three things, you are okay.
    edit: wow, this exploded. A lot of fellow atheists on the comments. For you that are atheist, may I suggest you guys also look into The Satanic Temple, a great source for Secular Satanism. It's a non-theist religion, so basically just Sparkling Atheism™.

    I'm Indian and that symbol is used COMPLETELY differently, it's called the Swastika, which literally means well-being, it's a symbol of auspiciousness and good luck and it represents Lord Ganpati ( more commonly known as Lord Ganesha) it's thousands of years old and one of the symbols used to depict Hinduism along with Om in India you will see paintings on walls of a cross, a crescent with a star (symbol of Islam), and the Swastika (it's used more often than Om), when Schliemann came to India he 'discovered' and spread it far and wide, quickly followed by the swastika, which became a ubiquitous sign, visible throughout Europe and North America. Swastikas would appear in advertising, adorning buildings as architectural motifs, and worn on badges or medallions. Sports teams, from ice hockey to basketball, even named themselves the Swastikas, so closely was the symbol associated with luck and success.
    At the same time, however, the swastika’s long history saw it become a favourite of German nationalists, who subscribed to a warped theory that they had descended from an ancient ‘master race’ known as the Aryans. This belief persisted into the 20th century, growing more pernicious until it appealed to Adolf Hitler, the leader of the burgeoning Nazi Party, . He adopted the swastika as a symbol of the movement in 1920.
    In fact the Swastika was tilted by the Nazi's and Hitler and they removed the dots.

    My biggest thought about the math problem was trying to figure out how hyperbolic they were being about the age of the children, because that determines what approaches I can immediately rule out. I also thought that a problem a programmer can solve relatively quickly might be something where you need to separate symbols from their usual meaning, because that’s relatively difficult for a person who understands them but incredibly easy for a computer, provided you can work out how to describe it. That seemed to fit with the idea of a very young child who would be likely to look at the symbols and see properties besides meaning. I decided addition into the double digits was probably too complicated, which pretty much eliminates any math or math concepts except for counting. Then I just looked at the entries that were all the same digit and tried to figure out what kind of thing might stand out to a small child and sometimes give different answers like that. Holes. Whether or not holes that aren’t circular still count is undecided, because there are no 4s to complicate matters or break the problem if you change the font. The answer is 2. I don’t know how long it took me, but it was a lot less than five minutes. I’m the level of being a programmer where I feel weird saying I’m a programmer without qualifying it in ways that probably wouldn’t mean anything to anyone besides other programmers, which I’m just now realizing is a bit silly.

      I think this is the anwser: each digit has a value:
      '0' = 1
      '1' = 0
      '2' = 0
      '3' = 0
      '5' = 0
      '6' = 1
      '7' = 0
      '8' = 2
      '9' = 1
      And the value of a group of digits is the sum of each of their values
      (ex: 8096 = '8' + '0' + '9' + '6' = 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5), so the anwser should be this:
      2581 = '2' + '5' + '8' + '1' = 0 + 0 + 2 + 0 = 2.
      4 hasn't a value because there isn't a single one in the exercise.
      I believe this is the right anwser because every example of the exercise validates the theory.
      There are multiple ways to figure it out.
      Btw, i'm a programmer too

    As a chonker I am intentionally trying to lose weight so I can ride a horse without killing it. Checkmate. Yes, society at large is fatphobic. It's hard to find clothing that fits, chairs that don't suck, supportive mattresses, and healthcare that doesn't attribute ALL (not just the relevant stuff) your symptoms to being fat. Like, yes, some things in this world are just punishing people for being fat when it isn't always within their control. But my reasons for not wanting to be fat aren't the same as everyone else's. Everyone wants to be the size they want to be for their own reasons. It's not fatphobic to want to fit into cute clothes when society refuses to make clothes that look cute on you at your current size. It's not fatphobic to not want to be charged extra when you have to travel by plane. And it's definitely not fatphobic to want to ride a horse without instantly killing it with my enormity. It's not fatphobic for me to want to enjoy my body, enjoy being active, enjoy being able to climb, run, jump, and play. I'm currently too heavy to even attempt skipping without hurting myself. And I just find that kind of sad for me.
    I don't hate the way I look right now. If I could do all the things I wanted to do right now at the size I currently am, I wouldn't be rushing to lose weight. But you can't do gymnastics when you can't lift your own body weight. You can't ride a horse when you're over a certain weight without hurting the animal. You can't get restful sleep when your bed is essentially too soft for you and your spine doesn't align right and you wake up with back pain.
    It is not fatphobic for me to want to enjoy my body and it wouldn't be fatphobic even if my only reason was that I don't enjoy how I look as a fat person. Fatphobia is thinking fat people are ugly, dirty, stupid, lazy, and unworthy because they are fat. I don't think that. Fat people can be sexy, dainty, smart, athletic, diligent, passionate, strong, fast, dexterous, talented, and they can do anything a thin person can do with the right experience and the right ability. Fat people do not deserve less because they are fat, and fat people are worthy of every advantage we give skinny people.
    Yes, health at any size is important. We shouldn't shame people. But we do need to make things more accessible to fat people. Better nutrition, easier access to calorie-light foods, allowing more time for food prep and natural meals, allowing more time for recreation, keeping parks, gyms, and other spaces for physical activity, clean, easy to access, and free or cheap to access. Having easier, less judgmental access to low impact physical activity for heavier people. Having healthcare that seeks to alleviate symptoms that make it difficult for people to live, not just blaming all symptoms on weight and refusing other treatments that could help (pain relief for example makes it much easier for a fat arthritic person to get moving again.)
    Our concern with fat people shouldn't necessarily be "getting them thin again." It should be "minimizing their pain, making it easier for them to stay healthy and fit, making it easier for them to eat right, exercise, and participate in society. Just like our concern with someone in a wheelchair shouldn't be "getting them to walk again." If a fat person wants to get thin, then they can focus their treatment on that, sure! Just like if it's possible for the person in a wheelchair to walk again and they would like to, their treatment should focus on that. But there will always be fat people. There will always be people in wheelchairs. We shouldn't rip out ramps because some wheelchair users might want to and be capable of walking someday, and similarly, we should not remove or deny support for fat people just because some of them might be thinner someday.
    TL;DR, it is not fatphobic for a fat person to want to change the way they look, feel, or interact with the world by losing weight. It is only fatphobia to treat fat people differently and act like they deserve any of the negative symptoms associated simply because they're heavier.

Think of back when America made alcohol illegal, and there was a boom of gangs selling it and crime and moonshiners and stuff. There was no more safety regulations, so it could contain ANYTHING potentially harmful with no repercussions. The same could happen with abortions, desperate people resorting to something with no regulation or safety requirements possibly ending up in terrible situations. Plus the weird notion my parents have about it being WORSE they offer teens to get abortions than it is for adults, as if they cant make the decision. If they cant make the decision of abortion, how are they ready for decisions on an actual life? They want a TEENAGER to go through pregnancy and birthing a child, then the problem of keeping or not keeping the child and how to care for it or give it away, their own future with school for one and society's perception of them as a teen mom, the other parent's presence or preference on the choice of what happens after its born, any work opportunities, heck they MIGHT not even be able to DRIVE at that point if they fell behind on the process of getting a license. People have seen firsthand how teen pregnancy can screw someone over, especially if the teenagers' parents kick them out or disown them because of it. Three years ago I gained a lot of weight. I went from 110-120lbs to 140-150lbs in a short amount of time. I was depressed, my body ached, and I constantly felt sick. All of which contributed to the weight gain.
    The more weight I gained the worse I felt which in turn cause me to gain more weight.
    I eventua6broke that cycle, got a job, and started working on losing that weight. I'm sitting around 120-130lbs now. And I can tell I'm much better. I don't wake up sick in the morning anymore. My hip has started to hurt less. My skin is clearer.
    I'm not saying that everyone needs to lose weight. Or that everyone who does lose weight does it for the same reasons I do. But I definitely didn't just lose weight so I could fit back into my old skinny jeans. Cause I still don't fit those clothes three years later. I got rid of them. I don't need to be as thin as I was before. Or fit into a beauty standard. I'm a punk. I don't fit the beauty standards anyway regardless of my weight. I just didn't want to be sick anymore.
    To be noted that I have a very small frame and am incredibly short. So these weights are average to high for me. But they may be a low weight for someone with more body than I have.
    My uncle is about 200lbs (mostly muscle) and that's average for him.
    So the numbers are not particularly important on an individual level. It's more about how your body feels. Fat to muscle ratios. How much energy you feel like you have and what your body is telling you. Nobody should feel like just because 150lbs was overweight for my body and made me sick that that means it's always going to be that way or that everyone who is that weight looks the same.

    Problems with the "3 consecutive terms" post, for those who are wondering how many points were wrong:
    1. Trump did not win 2020, so if he wins 2024, that would be his second term.
    2. If he wins 2024, those would not be consecutive terms, as he lost an election in between.
    3. If he had won 2020, he would not be allowed to run for 2024, as it is against U.S. law for a president to serve three terms.
    4. If Trump had won 2020, and somehow also won 2024, he STILL wouldn't be the first, as Franklin Delanor Roosevelt had done so, and is the reason the limit was set.

    I had to start steroids for my new arthritis diagnosis last year. They made me gain 30kgs in a month. That’s two pounds a day for you Americans. Then another 20 over the next two months. So 50kg in 3 months. I got uncomfortable. I couldn’t bend to tie my shoes properly among other things. It added extra pressure to my joints causing my pain to be worse. I had to buy new clothes because I couldn’t fit into any of mine anymore. I have a hormone imbalance so I sweat all the time but it’s exponentially worse now. I developed type 2 diabetes because of all of this too and my liver is “deranged”, (badly damaged due to the steroids and the extra fat). I’m losing weight so I can fit into my clothes again, shower without needing a nap afterwards, so my liver and pancreas can function again and my arthritis and sciatica chill tf out so I can leave the house again. The new meds I’m on for the diabetes is helping me lose the weight I now can’t lose on my own. I couldn’t gaf how others treat me, and I don’t care how I’m perceived. That woman is projecting her own fat phobia about herself and others onto people like me. My friend is also intentionally losing weight so she can safely go through heart surgery to fix the hole in her heart so she can still be around for her baby girl. Another friend is losing weight so she can have a safe pregnancy. My mum is losing it because her diabetes is getting out of control, she’s type one and insulin resistant and her insulin has almost stopped working completely. People need to stop assuming things about people, especially fat folks. We get judged whether we’re happy being fat or actively trying to lose weight. From other fat folks too. She’s become the thing she’s complaining about. Mind your own business, respect others’ bodies and wish them well on their journey whether they’re gaining weight, losing it or maintaining it. You’re not their close loved one and you’re sure as hell not their PT, GP or dietician. Get a hobby that isn’t judging others all the time.

  • @sorapokeball
    @sorapokeball Před rokem +13

    I somewhat understand where the fat phobia thing is coming from. I think setting goals in pounds/kilos/inches/etc is setting yourself up for failure. There's a difference between "I want to live a healthier lifestyle" and "I want to be skinny". For example, as you work out, you gain muscle while you shed fat, so your overall number may not change as much as you expect it to. And that's just one of the factors that goes into it. Looking at numbers alone can be very misleading and detrimental.

    • @imanadult7432
      @imanadult7432 Před 5 měsíci +1

      I agree. I think this is an important distinction to make because a lot of people associate the number with their goal of feeling better and being happy. I also don't think fat phobia has anything to do with this, though even if the focus is in the wrong place. People can wish to attain a certain look and have health be a happy side effect of their new goal or whatever they're looking for but that doesn't discount the humanity and respect one should still have for someone who has more pounds on you. I for instance, am about 100 pounds. I don't try for it, just the way my metabolism is. I actually fought very hard my whole childhood and early adult years to gain weight because I was teetering on the edge of being underweight and because being called a twig and being picked up by people you don't know "just because they can" is not fun, it's hurtful for a young kid.. however, being able to slowly gain weight and hoping to be at a size I'm happy with one day doesn't make it hard to view anyone else as beautiful and give them respect and love. Fat phobia isn't a medical issue, it's a lack of humanity and wanting something for yourself doesn't have to take away from others.

    0:57 REGARDING THAT PUZZLE,
    I believe it’s the number of “holes” in the numbers. 😊
    My PROCESS: I first started summing and subtracting the numbers, after realizing that wasn’t working, I realized the amount of holes was the same as the number in the right. I probably just guessed it fairly easily because I happen to be seeing topology, currently homeomorphisms between vertices, and well… holes (I you can probably tell if you’re a mathematician I just started seeing the topic). So I guess that list ordering letters of the alphabet by their topological invariants did have a use XD (got you, mom, math isn’t useless after all 😂).
    Some CORRECTIONS: this is completely extra, but I hate when they write things like “ 8809=6” cause in the arithmetic we’re used to that’s simply untrue. They could’ve written something like 8809=>6, but that’s just me. 😅

    7:30 I think the comic is trying to say that young men often feel like nobody cares about anything they do, and that normalizing giving young men compliments could help curb the male suicide rate.

      See, this is why I'm always saying guys should compliment each other more. You're looking out for your bros, and as an added bonus it'd make it a lot easier to casually compliment girls without them automatically assuming you're flirting with/creeping on them.

      I was lucky. When I was a toddler, and partly pulled out a plug, the jolt caused my muscles to violently and painfully contract. I was a slow learner, and did it again a few weeks later. 110v ac at 60 Hz is definitely something you can feel. It hurts. A lot. After 70 years, I clearly remember the pain.

    The reason they are limited to 2 terms was because FDR was insanely popular and served 3+ terms (he would have served a 4th term in its entirety if not for his untimely death). The 22nd Amendment was passed because of this, as the other party threw a hissy fit, and feared they would never get elected without term limits.
    So yeah, even if what they said was true about Trump being elected 3x consecutively, it still wouldn't make him the FIRST president to serve 3 terms. FDR served slightly over 3 terms back in the 30s-40s (1933-1945)

    "Bob's your uncle" is used to express the idea of a mere formality, something that requires no effort..
    Way back a politician named Robert gave his nephew easy cushy jobs, promoting him regularly because "Bob's your uncle".
    ps I think the phrase actually originated when the nephew wasn't sure if he'd get the cushy job he wanted, and a chum said, "Of course you'll get it; Bob's your uncle."
