  • Mickey goes deep into dry fire training. The best shooters will do thousands of dry fire presses for every live fire round. Our recent interview with Grand Master Eric Kamps is one good example (Podcast #26). So how do you do it? Can it harm your gun? What should you be thinking about? You'll get all these answers for better dry fire and more...
One of the the training scars when dry firing with a pistol is the constant need to rack the slide. That's where the Dry Fire Mag comes in; it allows the trigger to function normally with a audible click. This simple innovative product is a great aide for any dry fire training session.

My firearm of choice currently has a double strike capability without racking the slide, so dry fire exercises are easy and I don’t have to even have a magazine in it to do them. Dry fire is always an excellent choice for practice. When I was enlisted we did dime drills with our M-16A2 rifles to guarantee a smooth and consistent trigger pull.

Great advice. This helped me big time to get faster follow up shots for USPSA. If you're more adventurous there is a drop in dry fire trigger you can put in the Glock that is a lot more involving to install but lets you practice reloads with regular magazines instead.

I actually use the trigger reset while dry firing to drill type 1 and 2 malfunction clearing. Perform a tap- rack, rotate the ejection port exactly like one would while clearing an actual malfunction. Then push out, finger on trigger, sight picture, etc.

The 1911 was made for this grip with the thumb safety coming down as your push on target a millisecond after the trigger finger raps, and as you say, it's a 1911, "doesn't matter that part of the tip is in the trigger, it's gonna slide rearward, and this strong grip made me the 1911 gunner I am now. You're fantastic!

I already have a SIRT pistol and a cheapie little (sound activated) bore laser that I attach to the Walther P22 for the kids to practice (because double action).
The only thing keeping me from purchasing a Dry Fire Mag right now is the lack of an available laser target emitter that works for it. The reason is, I use the L.A.S.R. software and sometimes the ITargetPro on my phone for us to practice with. The kids love it, too.
If I wasn't dependent on a laser (don't watch for the laser hits, let the software do that for you- I tell the kids), the Dry Fire Mag would be the next best option. I love how technology has given us the ability to practice without having to go to a range, yet still keep our edge. My kids are better shots now than I was when I was their age, because of training and practice.
I have to tell you, the closest thing I've felt to a real life pistol (for training) is one of the new airsoft gas blowback pistols with laser emitting barrels. Although the reciprocating slide isn't completely as strong as felt recoil, it is pretty good at making you clamp onto the pistol if you want to keep getting good hits. The SIRT can make you kind of lazy when shooting long sessions, I catch myself gingerly holding the SIRT from time to time and have to correct myself. These blowback airsoft replica weapons aren't cheap, and when you add the laser device, they can cost more than the pistol you actually carry.
I wish I knew how long it was going to be until Dry Fire Mag was able to list a compatible laser, I'd buy one and wait. I've been fooled by vaporware before, and having one right now would be redundant.
