You buy this stuff once and it’s extremely high quality. It’s cheaper than constantly buying disposable versions of it. Not to mention you never have to buy all this stuff at once unless you’re going on some sort of expedition with zero experience.
My base layer is most often fishnet from Brynje. I have been using it since for the past 55 years. Depending on the cold my inner most base layer is a thin wool knit with a mid-weight wool or poly fleece. The outer layers depend on the wind and minus temperature and activity. I think the Base layer and the inner most mid layer are the key to staying dry. All the layers are on the oust side of my belt to allow water vapor to exit out the bottom.
Ahh now it all makes sense, watched a CZcams video by Ted last night on the gear used on his 1000km hike and I’m thinking “wow this guy has a lot of Fjallraven gear, he’s either rich or connected to them in some way”. Following day out comes a video from Fjallraven starring Ted.
This taught me a lot, I had no idea how to properly layer before watching this. All I knew was that wool was key, which I've learned through trial and error. Thank you so much for teaching us how to do this. With the changing climate, this information may prove useful for people who never needed it before.
A few months ago I bought a pair of Fjällräven Keb trousers to wear when I do my daily walks. The clerk at the store where I bought them said if I tried them onI would almost certainly buy them. She was 100% right. They are very comfortable. At first I was a little worried that they might not be suitable for the colder winter days here in Québec. I am happy to say that with a simple thin fleece base layer they remain comfortable even at -20C and that’s not accounting for windchill. Of course this is whilst walking at a good pace for about one hour. I am very happy with my new trousers and would recommend them to anyone who is active. Best technical product I have ever bought so far.
The most important trick that iv’e learned (yet to don’t see properly discussed ) is for people to stay active throughout their activity in managing temperature = zipping and unzipping proactively throughout the day or at intervals -took me a long time to learn DON’T wait til the next rest interval for unzipping because by then there might already be heat n sweat built up inside your gear - learn to be mindful and adjust for temp and aeration while in motion and de-layer right away when you go inside .ALSO after years of testing different combinations id say having a SMARTWOOL longsleeve as your base layer is HANDS DOWN A MUST HAVE !!
When moving and doing strenuous activity even in pretty cold temperatures start cold and let the hike warm you up to avoid sweating…wearing more than two layers while hiking is probably a recipe for being sweaty…when you slow down and cool off then toss on the down layers or a windbreaker if needed
Excellent video on layering, what to use and when to use it. I shudder to think of the cost of just buying half those items. I have a number of Fjällräven items from bags, to shorts to tops. All great quality but not cheap.
I'm glad I found this video. I do a lot of outdoor activities both in the summer and winter. In the winter, I'm always cold! Thinking of purchasing Fjallraven layering system. I already own several Fjallraven products but want to start from scratch. My question is, if you start to layer from base to mid-layer to shell etc, do you increase in size as well? Because as you add layers, it's going to get tighter. Thanks!
Would love to see a video geared towards running with the garment pieces having a temperature range. Like if it’s 10-30 degrees wear this. If it is 30-40 wear this etc.

I actually use different jackets instead of layers. For just walks One synthetic above the knees coat for men that is perfect for 5-10 Celsius. One below the knees down coat for men that is perfect for 5 to -5 Celsius with high knee socks. And when it is really bad. A down jacket with a cover all face hood with only nose and eyes free with thermo pants. For more activity I use a synthetic jacket that when needed can be used with a middle layer. So instead of different layers I use different jackets. Mostly because when I get indoors I just have to take of just 1 thing instead of 5 things

Great video. I'm climbing elbrus in July. I have an extensive clothing kit for this expedition. My base layers are merino. Mid layers are Rab. Vida Pro pants and loutse gor tex jacket. Final layer karakoram pants and down jacket just to mention a few. Can't wait!!! to break them in lol

With some of them, like the Bergtagen, there is more room in the jacket for your size as it's kinda designed for a padded jacket underneath whereas the Keb Eco Shell is more for maybe a fleece underneath. If you have a store available near you, it's best to try them on with a few layers to make sure that it's right for you. They're expensive items so you want to get it right.
Whew! This whole video is weird. First of all he clearly is in an environment where he only needs a fraction of what he's showing off, which makes it look like he's just trying to sell stuff first and foremost, with no regard to some realism. Second, the "onion" layering myth is an invention of outdoor companies trying to sell as much as possible and in many/most scenarios provides suboptimal results when compared to the 2-layer rule of using baselayer and an apropriate type of jacket or fleece whenever humanely possible. When temps go down the first option should always be to switch jackets for a warmer one, not to layer stuff in between. The problem with layering is that it complicates moisture management (more layers = more stuff that can absorb moisture and it will because fleece likes to do that) and creation of a stable microclimate around the body. Wearing quality baselayer and a well designed breathable insulation layer with nothing inbetween makes it much easier for the jacket and the body to actually do their job. It's the same reason why it is generally recommended to sleep in a warmer sleeping bag with minimal clothes on rather than sleep in a thin bag with a down jacket on. Yes, this system has obvious limits - you can't go backpacking for days with 3 different puffy jackets and 3 different softshells... That's why I write "when possible" and let's be honest - the vast majority of outdoor brands' customers are people who drive to the trailhead and go for a daytrip 95 % of the year. Second, hardshell jackets should always firmly and loudly be in the "necessary evil" category, but Ted won't tell you that because he needs to sell. Goretex and other shells are going through a horrible hype period where any time I go out in the woods or open a CZcams video about mountaineering I see people deliberately suffering the abysmal breathability of a hardshell jacket (yes, even GTX) in situations that are far below the level of weather severity that calls for a hardshell. Drop it people! Don't do this to yourself! Carry a HS at the bottom of your pack for the one or two occasions in a year when you need it (if at all - even rain is not necessarilly a reason to wear a HS). There's a wide array of way more breathable materials and jackets to choose from. Sorry to all pro hardcore mountaineers who need a HS more often... but we all know that's just a tiny fraction of people buying outdoor stuff.

Hi, We have several layer 2 and those are the fleece-jackets /wool sweaters. For example Keb fleece hoodie w, Stina fleece W and Abisko trail fleece W and more. The thickness of the layers and the numbers of layers you want to use depends on the level of activity, temperature and weather conditions.
When you started talking about insulation layers. Should not Bergtagen insulation layer suppose to be under Eco shell ? Because from the video it looks like it should be over Eco shell, cause he dressed Down jacket (which is insulation) over it too.

Hi, It depends on how you are using the insulation jacket and layers. It cold and dry weather you usually take the insulation jacket on top
Also with Fjallraven is the layering outer pieces designed to fit the under layers underneath or do you need to buy a size larger in outer layers to fit under layers underneath?

Hi, This is something you try with the layers you want to us, but the short answer to your question is yes.
@ so most of your mid and outer layers are sized to fit layers underneath…so for example: if I bought a base layer, mid layer and shell all in size medium, they should all fit when worn together?

@ I’m thinking a KUIU merino wool base layer (thin), then a Fjallraven lada sweater and then a Fjallraven bergtagen lite insulated jacket…for the last piece would I need to size up or would all medium work well together?

That's exactly what I mean. If you already start with an XL base layer, what size is the outer layer then? Afterall you should still be able to move easily.

Too tight is not good so maybe go up a size in some of the middle and outer layers, but try it on first. When clothes are too tight you dont capture enough air between layers.
Tad, that’s great information but the cost of that amount of fjallraven layering is going to be astronomical. What would be the cost effective solutions?
He kind of tells you what the layers are made of. I have the vidda trousers a he uses, and just put some generic wool/synth longies under and it works great in the winter. But yeah I was thinking the same thing, like that gotta be 3K worth of clothes on him there.

Hi, The Greenland jacket has the G-1000 only and does not have any lining. So how much you need to add under the jacket is totally depending on the temperature, level of activity, weather conditions and personal preferences.
Fun is debatable, but yeah you need about 5 layers to not freeze to death in the arctic circle, not even including the cost of a shelter, sleeping bag and skiis. But in normal 3-season situations a synthetic shirt, rain jacket and light insulation piece will be more than sufficient.
This is crazy, that many layers will restrict mobility, and be very uncomfortable for hiking etc, you would need a huge pack to carry them to as you remove layers , totally impractical
Ted already explained the details. He said that if you’re in a high paced activity, going around with much layers is not good. Layering is only good when you’re not doing much to retain heat. You should pay attention.
Hi Ted, I notice those trousers have size zippers from top to bottom...are they held up by a belt or shoulder braces (as in salopette) ? Do they have inbuilt snow gaiters or would you wear separate gaiters over your boots? What model are they if I may ask?

Hi! The trousers are the Bergtagen Eco-shell trousers. They do not have a built in belt or shoulder bracers. They do have built in snow gaiters. The benefit with the zippers are that you can put them on or take them off without taking off your boots. Have a nice day! / Lucas

Hi, If the outer fabric on the jacket is the G-1000, you can apply wax. Also the jacket comes pre waxed if it has the G-1000 fabric. The membrane is inside the jacket and you cannot and should not affect or treat the membrane itself.

This is wack. Too many layers, you don't want or need that many. For pretty much any outdoor conditions in the mountains, you need a synthetic t-shirt, a wool or polyester baselayer, a down jacket, and a shell. That's it.

I bought my Greenland jacket 22years ago and it is still working fine on my outdoor trips 👍🏻

With the vidda pro you dont need any thing else than a normal long sleaved t-shirt down to atleast -10- - 15. Layers are only used in sweden below -20
Everything he wore in the video is only needed below -25
And also you cant move in that without sweating like crazy

Hi, We have several layer 2 and those are the fleece-jackets /wool sweaters. For example Keb fleece hoodie w, Stina fleece W and Abisko trail fleece W and more. The thickness of the layers and the numbers of layers you want to use depends on the level of activity, temperature and weather conditions.

When you started talking about insulation layers. Should not Bergtagen insulation layer suppose to be under Eco shell ? Because from the video it looks like it should be over Eco shell, cause he dressed Down jacket (which is insulation) over it too.
Hi, It depends on how you are using the insulation jacket and layers. It cold and dry weather you usually take the insulation jacket on top

Also with Fjallraven is the layering outer pieces designed to fit the under layers underneath or do you need to buy a size larger in outer layers to fit under layers underneath?

@ so most of your mid and outer layers are sized to fit layers underneath…so for example: if I bought a base layer, mid layer and shell all in size medium, they should all fit when worn together?

That's my big problem. Fjälräven doesn't have big enough clothes for me to do all the layers with Fjälräven. It doesn't fit me...
That's exactly what I mean. If you already start with an XL base layer, what size is the outer layer then? Afterall you should still be able to move easily.

Too tight is not good so maybe go up a size in some of the middle and outer layers, but try it on first. When clothes are too tight you dont capture enough air between layers.
Tad, that’s great information but the cost of that amount of fjallraven layering is going to be astronomical. What would be the cost effective solutions?
You can't go cheap on expedition clothes. I spent 5k but it's an investment that should keep me covered for 8/10 years mountaineering

He kind of tells you what the layers are made of. I have the vidda trousers a he uses, and just put some generic wool/synth longies under and it works great in the winter. But yeah I was thinking the same thing, like that gotta be 3K worth of clothes on him there.

Hi, The Greenland jacket has the G-1000 only and does not have any lining. So how much you need to add under the jacket is totally depending on the temperature, level of activity, weather conditions and personal preferences.

Hi, It is the Bergtagen Eco shell trousers.
So, what you are saying is that I need to buy five jackets in order to have some fun outdoor.
Fun is debatable, but yeah you need about 5 layers to not freeze to death in the arctic circle, not even including the cost of a shelter, sleeping bag and skiis.
But in normal 3-season situations a synthetic shirt, rain jacket and light insulation piece will be more than sufficient.
6 million dollars later, you've got one season sorted.
What about pants?
Why are there no Fjallraven gloves? Hats, belts, socks but no gloves - seems like an odd omission
This is crazy, that many layers will restrict mobility, and be very uncomfortable for hiking etc, you would need a huge pack to carry them to as you remove layers , totally impractical
Ted already explained the details. He said that if you’re in a high paced activity, going around with much layers is not good. Layering is only good when you’re not doing much to retain heat. You should pay attention.

Hi Ted, I notice those trousers have size zippers from top to bottom...are they held up by a belt or shoulder braces (as in salopette) ? Do they have inbuilt snow gaiters or would you wear separate gaiters over your boots? What model are they if I may ask?
Hi! The trousers are the Bergtagen Eco-shell trousers. They do not have a built in belt or shoulder bracers. They do have built in snow gaiters. The benefit with the zippers are that you can put them on or take them off without taking off your boots.

Hi, If the outer fabric on the jacket is the G-1000, you can apply wax. Also the jacket comes pre waxed if it has the G-1000 fabric. The membrane is inside the jacket and you cannot and should not affect or treat the membrane itself.

This is wack. Too many layers, you don't want or need that many. For pretty much any outdoor conditions in the mountains, you need a synthetic t-shirt, a wool or polyester baselayer, a down jacket, and a shell. That's it.
