How to Make a Ceramic Teapot, from Beginning to End.

  • Strap in, this week's video is a long, and in-depth one, that goes over the entire process behind making a stoneware teapot. Parts thrown on the potter's wheel, then assembled, handle pulled, and so on.
    Timecodes:
    0:00 - Introduction
    0:32 - Throwing teapot body
    3:30 - Throwing lid
    5:01 - Throwing spout
7:45 - Trimming and assembling teapot
20:19 - Pulling and attaching the handle
25:17 - Packing the electric kiln for a bisque firing
27:26 - Unpacking the electric kiln
    28:02 - Waxing the teapot
    29:37 - Glazing the teapot
33:19 - Rolling out the waddings to prop up the lid
34:03 - Packing the gas kiln
34:49 - Firing the gas kiln
37:32 - Unpacking the gas kiln
38:27 - Grinding the lid smooth
    39:18 - Sanding the base
    39:42 - Finished teapots
My wadding recipe is: 50% china clay/kaolin, 50% coarse alumina hydrate. Mix together slowly and then combine with water very slowly, as it seems to turn to a liquid very easily, so add less than you think.
The gas kiln is a Rohde KG-340, and my potter's wheel is a Rohde HMT 500.
    Thanks for watching!

It's pretty stunning how many concepts carry over between machining and pottery: lapping, using a turning wheel to create concentricity, and how similar trimming is to turning on a lathe. The tolerances are different obviously, and one is significantly more manual than the other, but truthfully crafting is crafting, regardless of media. Thank you for the video and for taking us inside your studio, it's a joy to watch.

As a tea enthusiast I am glad to see all the details that must be taken care of when making a teapot. It’s that combination of little fits, chamfers, angles and bores that make or break a pot.

Even though I can’t afford your tea pots... you’re not charging enough! So lovely, so very lovely... and yes I’ve watched it all the way through. (Didn’t get to hear the music of the pots when you opened the kiln 😔)

Thank you very much... and sadly no, not this time, I opened the kiln after a whole weekend this time, so it had another full 24 hours to cool down all the way to ambient room temperature, when that happens there's no pinging noises. The tinkling sound only really occurs when I open the kiln at 150ºc or so.

Beautiful work! True artisanship. The beauty shots at the very end do show them off, but seeing them in context on the boards somehow I find even more beautiful. You did give me a minor heart attack at 26:40, casually removing that entire shelf of pots :-O

Thank you! I think I’d be a pretty good waiter with all the experience I have moving precarious boards of wobbly pots.

The last 6 minutes of the video was an ugly realization of how much money I need to spend to have such a fine product! That Gas kiln is probably more expensive than a vehicle! I don't do pottery, but love watching your videos before I go to bed. A true craftsmanship with smooth delivery!

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  Před 3 měsíci +1

You don't have to start with a gas kiln! You can start making pottery with much cheaper, electric kilns, and use small amounts of commercial glazes that are brushed on, so you don't have to mix up big batches like I do. Thanks so much for watching!
