Not only is it much harder to do than most people comprehend, but there’s the hours and hours of work that goes to make it even feasible to produce numbers of pieces as similar as possible. There’s the experience that makes the lips of cups comfortable to drink from, or spouts that are capable of pouring. There’s working with the glazes, which trust me, isn’t intuitive. Most glazes don’t look anything like their fired counterparts, look different depending on temperature, and can be radically different depending on a reducing or oxidising kiln burn. Then there’s paying for the power for the kiln. Be it gas, electric or even wood fired, the fuel has to be paid for. Glazes can be bought or compounded by the potter, but either way, it has to be paid for. Clay body has to come from somewhere. Even if the potter digs and purifies their own clay, it costs money to dig raw material, store it, purify it. Or you can buy it prepared, and accordingly more expensive. And finally ofc there’s actually making the pieces. A production potter brings that time down to a minimum, but it’s still an important expense, plus there’s the electrical power used to produce pieces, for light, heat and the wheel. Tbh very few handcrafters are paid what their work deserves, but settle for, hopefully, something that is livable.

It shows through their works. It’s really interesting how our personal creative process can make products that are uniquely us.

Watching the amount of skill going into these coffee cups makes me appreciate my local potters' works even more. Usually as artists, we get questioned why our works are so expensive. However, I think it's important customers and clients understand why the cost is as it is- the amount of skill, the time spent refining those skills and producing these creations, etc going into a product/piece.

I loved watching the process. I’m holidaying in Muskoka Ontario in Canada, I visited many potters and bought these dark chocolate mugs and bowls. I gravitate toward hand made. They feel cared for and they mean something… like a connection. I spoke with the potter he was lovely and now I’ll think of John when I’m enjoying my coffee.

Not to be rude, but I think I'm in love with your bottoms ;)
Seriously though, the attention and care put into them relly makes a difference for me, they're so modern, slick and warm at the same time... Love it !

This was so fascinating to watch! So detailed from start to finish, all while being soothing, interesting and satisfying. The results are so beautiful, one of my favourite colours actually. I love that each pot is slightly different and have such distinct character. It made me appreciate the fantastic art of pottery 1000x more than i already did.
Definitely going to watch some more of your videos, after finishing some of my artworks now that i have newfound inspiration.
    Thank you for sharing!

You can clearly hear the the passion for the craft on the potter's voice. Thank you for sharing your craft. I was trying to show my 4 year old how cups are made before putting him to sleep and ended up watching all 24 and a half minutes of you. Thank you for this. You gained two fans. My son was blown away :)
