5 Tips & Tricks for Centring and Throwing on the Potter's Wheel
This weekend’s video goes over five simple tips and tricks that might help you throw better pots, or deal with unwanted wobbles and undulations in the clay by learning to throw ‘with’ them. From re-centring an opened-up lump of clay, to compressing the wall of clay AS it’s pulled up, to a technique that was taught to me by Svend Bayer in 2013 that really helped me throw lighter, more balanced pots. Then I cover water usage and ways of using less of it, and finally, a way of using metal, plastic and wooden ribs for shaping without potentially distorting the pot you’re throwing. Thanks for watching!

This Sunday's video is the conclusion to one I've already shown some of the process for. I'm doing a few more new clay tests from the bodies Potclays kindly sent to me. I'm blending the more textured stonewares down with my usual clay and incorporating a few big pinches of iron spangles, made from hammering iron, which should create some rather dramatic speckles on the surfaces of the vases. I'...

How I Made 100 Miniature Cups - ASMR Edition
Made my teeth hurt 😭😭
Have you ever cooked a pizza inside
I love them. Please be careful with bronze turnings/swarf, it can be incredibly sharp and can find its way into your skin so very easily. I'm not a potter but I do turn bronze for model steam engine boiler fittings.
The scraping sound is so annoying and it hurts my head
I really want to try pottery and I was wondering what a good wheel would be for a complete beginner while being relatively cheap (in case I for some reason decide it’s not something I enjoy) something in the 100-250 USD$ range
Have you ever thought of narrating nature documentaries? You sound like the David Attenborough of pottery
I really like your accent
maybe you could use a more vibrant glaze (if there even is i have no idea) to make a verdigris appearence
I feel like I always collect way too much slip on my hands that I constantly need to throw aside into a bucket. Do you think that means I’m using too much water? I notice you said to keep the pots very wet in other videos so you don’t hit dry spots and mess it up.
I loved your teaching about wing, having watched the cantering video before it. I had @ lesson today on throwing and whilst I could centre and pull up and push down to really centre the clay, when I tried to pull up, I took the top off twice with my nail. Devastating. So when I came home I watched this video and realise I wasn’t pulling up the sides comfortably due to my finger position. So I’ll try the other hand next time t week. Love your video training sessions. Thank you.
U have a wonderful voice❤
As a relatively inexperienced baby potter, this is quite inspirational
What kind of clay are you using and from what company? Thanks
This guy sounds like he voice acted in Hades
And here I hoped a man would chuck a clay jar at a wall
você pode utilizar metal em pó. isso pode mudar a dureza, cor... e dar características diferentes para a cerâmica
Thank you!! 🙂
Perfection
So so helpful, thank you. I really love the very in depth explanations of hand positions, where (and where not) pressure is being applied and how much, which parts of the palm are being used and when, the reasons why for each step or hand position. Its impossible to tell these things just by looking at someone do it. I dont have huge strength in my upper arms so watching strong people centre by brute force is discouraging but having these videos on tecnique are fantastic. So wonderful of you to provide them.
Personally I airbrush my glaze on. I get what feels like a more even coat using less glaze but who cares
OMG, that would be in bits if I attempted to make that 😅😂
That was so helpful, thank you
Does the water used while throwing go into the reclaim bucket?
It does!
So why is it necessary to fire with the lid on? Why is that better than firing it separately?
Saves space in the kiln, ultimately making them more fuel efficient as time goes by. It also prevents the delicate rims of the jars from potentially warping at high temperatures and it ensures they match in terms of colour, as in a reduction fired kiln there can be subtle tonal differences even with the same glaze if they're fired in different places in the kiln.
All thats left is to fart
I’ve just watched this again after losing my pottery mojo 😢 I’m feeling inspired to keep trying so thank you 🙏
Should wax the bottom so the glaze doesnt stick. Then you dont have to scrape off the bottom everytime
sound like salad finger? anyone?
I thought wow that’s so nice I want one > a little googling later > holy shit that’s a £1000+ gift box?!
Rince the soap off, ye nasty boi
Hi Florian. Out of curiosity, why do you glaze the outside first? Could one avoid the work of fettling away drip marks outside if one glazed the inside first?
For the love of god please fire some of the ones that droop and go wobbly. They look like neat table pieces
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Bro glazing too much
Wow what a cool video, let's go check out the other....oh. it's all "asmr" trash. I just want cool pottery, bro, but if I see "ASMR" in a title I just skip the rest of the channel. What happened to just doing videos like this? why do you need an extra gimmick on top of art? it's like touching up the Mona Lisa with crayon.
There’s tons of videos like this - just sort via playlists and click the ‘narrated’ option. My most viewed videos are the ‘ASMR’ editions… I get it, maybe it’s the wrong term, maybe ‘no speaking’, or ‘ambient sounds’? But there’s a market for them, in fact, I watch a few channels that are just a craftsperson at work with nothing but the sounds of the process. Annoyingly, ‘ASMR’ as a buzzword seems to be the most impactful, meaning I’d be silly not to use it. Some people don’t want the additional voice over, so I provide both options, and in no way does it affect your experience, as you decide what you watch.
Anything you don’t want glaze to stick to, like the foot of your vase, you can just dip or brush in a bit of wax. The glaze slides right off and it’s melted away during firing
Short and sweet indeed! The slip one and the last tip my teacher taught me and it immediately made my pots look much more refined
The walls are so elegantly thin.... 🙂
Can you do a tutorial on how to throw air dry clay? Should you make the bottom and walls thicker, as air dry clay is more prone to breakage? Is it easier/harder to throw? I want to learn how to do this and I feel like this is a cheaper option for first starting out, as I don't have access to a kiln.
I’m afraid I’ve never thrown with air drying clay! But I imagine it’s the same as most clays, so my usual centring/how-to guides should work.
Epic save!
I love the sound… But I also love the smell of gasoline so my opinion isn’t one to go off.
What I truly don’t understand is that it goes in red and comes out blue… How does the glaze work that it completely changes the color? How do you pick a color if it always winds up being completely different from what it looked like before it was glazed?
Thank you so much for all of your videos. I thoroughly enjoy them. I started reading your book during my husband and I's most recent anniversary trip and I've been slowly reading it since (because I don't want it to end)
Thank you for a very relaxed but comprehensive tutorial. I will endeavour to be more mindful when completing my pieces.🙂
I always called it leather hard. It should be stiff yet malleable like a new leather belt. And if you wait too long it gets bone dry. And super fragile.
Did you have the clay recipe for this?
Wow, your tips are excellent! And many of them I’d never heard!
I love this
I wonder how a pot made of marbled clay would look like now
At the ending I expected you to come back, pick it up, and throw it at the wall for the pun. 😂
