  • These small jars are some of my favourite pots once fired and this video shows how I throw, trim, glaze and fire them. They're fiddly vessels to finish but I really love how they look and feel once fired.
Thanks for watching and if you're got any further questions please leave it down in the comments and I'll do my best to reply.

My first impression to this video was “I remember my art teacher telling me that learning a pottery wheel is like learning an instrument” and I agreed with him based solely on his decades of experience in art.
When I saw you forming the pots I was careful to tell myself “it may look easy and flashy but he’s definitely making this look easy.”
And I knew for certain you make it look easy and were quickly approaching a perfected product when I saw that enormous oven you fired the jars in. Anyone who has an oven that big doesn’t just fuck around with clay on the weekends, it takes years of dedication to make this a career and it should be respected deeply.

The tinkling of the glaze has an indescribable appeal. It's like it's greeting you with a subtle magic when you open up the kiln to see all the finished pieces.
I'd love to pick up pottery as a hobby. I love experimentation and trial and error problem solving. It would be meditative and, perhaps just as important, produce useful items. I should start learning about it.

I so love the simplicity of these lidded jars and have been trying to analyze them to figure out how I could translate the lessons here into making a butter crock (or French butter dish). I’ve found a few tutorials on making butter crocks but none that go into the detail you tend to include in your videos, nor do they address the complexity of glazing a two-part pot that has a top that also must serve as a the base. I don’t know whether you’d ever consider it but I’d love to see a tutorial on such a pot if that shape was of any interest to you!
