  • One thing I forgot to mention in the voice over is that lucky nations also get a boost to governing capacity, so France's success is partly dependent on having lucky nations turned on.

    The premise at the start isn't accurate. "Unlike many other strategy games that put the player in the shoes of specific countries, the EU series puts the player in charge of a nation-state". But EU4 does the exact opposite, it puts players in charge of specific political entities and not nation-states that people in modern times are used to. You're not playing as the English, French, or Germans. You play specific political entities represented as tags in EU4.
    In fact, there are hardly any nation-states at the start of the game. That is to say, a state (political structure) that encompasses and is defined by a nation (cultural structure). France goes on to develop into one of the European nation-states with strong national identities, but in 1444 French people live under a number of feudal states with a significant chunk of them under England and independent Burgundy. I'm not 100% sure if Occitans in 15th century would have seen themselves as "French" either. So France tag is not a nation-state. Most of the classic nation-states that we know of such as Germany and Italy form after the EU4 timeline. If, like the video states, EU4 represented people who did not conform to the idea of nation-states as uncolonized land, most of the world map would be empty. Certainly most all of Europe except for maybe Portugal and a few others.
    The Papal States, all the trade cities and HRE free cities and minor princes, Ottomans, the Knights.... all these tags integral to EU4 are all antithetical to the idea of nation-states.

    EU3 did pretty well in this situation. You had to colonize lands of hordes and they were in permanent war with non-horde neighbours. Though diplomacy and governing for tribal states weren't very different from monarchic and republic counterparts.

    • @Testimony_Of_JTF
      @Testimony_Of_JTF Před 2 lety +6

      Dude the horde mechanic was literally the worst thing in the game, it was IMPOSSIBLE to play as a horde and very hard to expand or even survive near them because they would always show up with 12-20k stacks to wipe your army. (And would always be at war with you)
      The fact that you couldn't just annex provinces was also sooo boring because now you had to spend way more money and time to expand into hordes.
      Another huge issue was that you COULDN'T declare war against hordes, you could only no CB them. When hordes got small or weak they would usually chill a bit so you had to wait so long for them to declare war against you

    • @Pmurder3
      @Pmurder3 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Testimony_Of_JTF Yeah, it's pretty annoying, but at the same time, they are free lands to take. What is more annoying is in eu3 their lands are mostly have their culture and only their core on it, so they aren't really break apart naturally.

    two suggestions I thought of, what if monarch points were randomized every month? Also, what if there were no beginning and end trade nodes (in meaning that, for every trade node, there must be trade coming in and trade coming out, so for example the English Channel would need an exit while California would need an entrance)?

    • @EU4T
      @EU4T  Před 2 lety +4

      Unfortunately because of the way trade works, there must be at least one end node, or the value in each node would increase between each node forever to infinity. I do have a video coming up on a possible solution to that, though.

      @@EU4T A nation state is a state by a nation for the nation. In EU4 the king is the state and it exists for the king.

    • @EU4T
      @EU4T  Před 2 lety

      I've always understood it to be that nations are built of ethnicities (In EU4 they are called cultures) and a nation state is an entity where the state is in some way combined with the nation. In EU4 that would be primary cultures and accepted cultures. Aside from monarchies, EU4 has republics, tribal nations, and even stateless societies like in the video, so I don't understand what you mean about kings. I'm certainly no expert, though, and I could be wrong about this.
